To ask where you'd go for a whole body health check?

Got bad bad anxiety at the moment and I need to get everything checked. Keep waking up in the night convinced I've got a hideous life ending problem. It's not like me, never been like this, which is making me worry that somehow my body knows something.

Anyway, want to get absolutely everything checked so hopefully I can put mad brain to bed but want something that covers absolutely everything like the equivalent of something you'd need to go and work offshore or something. Infectious diseases, the works.

Any reccos?

Thanks.

You could look at Nuffield Health.

Theresit · 30/01/2024 14:44

BUPA do one called Be.Reassured for £829

DoAWheelie · 30/01/2024 14:48

I wouldn't do it at all. Most doctors don't recommend it either.

Here is a video from a UK doctor explaining why full body scans and health checks cause more issues than they solve s

Especially when you are doing it for health anxiety. You need therapy to treat it not endless tests seeking reassurance.

Should You Get a Full Body Scan?

You would do far far better to get the underlying anxiety dealt with. If you suffer with anxiety then this won’t reassure you. You’ll end up convinced they missed something or you’ve developed something after the scan. See your GP for MH help.

BeaRF75 · 30/01/2024 14:53

You don't need a whole body health check, but perhaps you need to investigate some appropriate therapy for your anxiety?

Thewolvesarerunningagain · 30/01/2024 14:54

This is a very bad idea. There will always be something just because bodies aren’t perfect and all tests work with ranges not absolutes. So you can get some frightening looking results that mean nothing at all. Also even if you come back absolutely AOK, how long will it be before your anxiety comes back and you start to
worry that you may have developed something since? Anxiety, especially health anxiety, feeds on that dopamine hit you get from reassurance. It just sets you up to want more.

I know I am overreacting. I've been sick for six weeks with primary onset HSV and it has messed with my head. Most people are fully better after a month or less and so I'm assuming there's something else at play. But then maybe I'm just reacting to having been sick with something I can't really talk about openly. I think a one off would really help just reassure me.

Although take the point about little slightly odd results making things worse.

I'm not sure there is such a thing as a set of tests that would tell you absolutely everything... is there?

The problem with health anxiety is that no reassurance will ever be enough. It's a temporary relief. I suffer from it myself, it's awful.

Wolfiefan · 30/01/2024 15:04

And some people may take longer than six weeks. Make sure you eat well and try to do all you can to look after yourself.
It really really won’t help. Trust me!

Don't do it, OP. I once had a full abdominal mri and it showed up loads of incidental findings that I would never have known about. Cysts etc. consultant told me to forget about them, but if you're anxious it'll send you down a rabbit hole.

ChristmasGutPunch · 30/01/2024 15:57

O God. Yeah you guys are right I need to get head sorted first. I keep having palpitations and worrying that this is it but I think that's just the panic about whether or not I'm having palpitations.

Think friends think I've lost the plot as am usually the one trying to help them chill.

Thanks everyone.
