To have my nose pierced

Barb90 · 29/01/2024 10:59

I am 33 and really want my nose pierced, I mentioned it to my mum and she said do not do that its awful and makes me look a bad influence to the children?

My mum was horrified when, aged 17, I had an additional set of holes put in my earlobes 🤣

I'm sure she absolutely hates my septum piercing now but ultimately it's not her body. As for comments that it's a bad example to your DCs - how?! It says absolutely nothing about a person to get their nose pierced, except that they have their nose pierced. A bit of shiny metal is not a moral failing.

Pickingmyselfup · 29/01/2024 11:59

If you like it do it. I am 38 this year and would love mine doing but it doesn't suit me, got a fake one to try it out and it looks stupid. I have loads of ear piercings and still not finished, 2 tattoos, would be more but they are so expensive so can't afford any right now!

I find this mindset fascinating- it’s a wee bit of jewellery, whats ‘old and desperate’ about that? Op, go for it, I’m planning getting the other side of my nose done when I’m finished breastfeeding because I think double nostril piercings are neat, and I’ll probably be 35 ish then!

I know I'm being completely unreasonable don't worry, it's just my truthful reaction. I think it seems to stem from a feeling of mutton dressed as lamb. On the other hand a double nostril piercing would be a monstrosity for sure.

SpeedyDrama · 29/01/2024 12:15

You’re a grownup, you don’t need to worry about what your mum says! Or anyone else come to that (take it from someone covered in tattoos and having to read the lovely comments on MN about ink 🤣). Your kids will do their own thing regardless of your choices.

DRS1970 · 29/01/2024 12:17

I don't think having a solitary nose piercing would present an issue to your children's development and outlook. So many people wear them these days, that if your children don't see the piercing in you, they will see it on countless others. Go for it. Your mom will survive.

Nose piercing is incredibly mainstream now, particularly among women over 30

Exactly, it was relatively unusual in the early/mid 90s but not since then. People should express the style their way

Aw, agree to disagree! Truly I’ll never understand how judgmental some people are over the silliest things.

Completely agree with you !

Of course it is, just like ear piercing. I first had my nose pierced at 17 and still wear my septum piercing at 51 - nothing even remotely remarkable about it. I did take my eyebrow piercing out after a year or so, but only because I didn't like it.

I also don't use revolting misogynistic expressions like 'mutton dressed as lamb'.

Septum pirecing is mainstream now? I don't think it is!

LadyDanburysHat · 29/01/2024 12:28

Got mine done at 40. Had wanted it at 16 but was too scared of my judgmental mum to do it then. DD (12) wants hers done, I don't see it as a bad influence. I've told her she can have it done at 14.

Projectme · 29/01/2024 12:29

I've wanted one since I was 40 (I'm now 53) and I still umm and ahh about having it done. When I said to both my parents that I was thinking of having it done for my 40th, they both looked horrified and said 'NOOOOOO'!!! 😂I happened to say about it again for my 50th and my DF said 'oh please don't...'

I'd feel so guilty if I had it done now!!

ManchesterLu · 29/01/2024 12:35

You're not a bad influence on your children at all. You're a fully grown adult embracing your body, which they will also be able to do when they're adults and able to make rational decisions for themselves. Enjoy! I bet it'll look good. I'd have mine done if I wasn't such an absolute wimp!

Lovelydovey · 29/01/2024 12:36

Do it. I'm 41 and have had my nose pierced for more than 20 years and I still love it. I'm a senior woman in finance and nobody has ever commented negatively on it.

sadie93 · 29/01/2024 12:39

It's such a minor thing! Don't know why it would be a big deal. I've had a small nose stud for 10 years and I'm 31 now.

My sister also has one, and our mum (63) got her nose pierced 5 or 6 years ago!

Kerantli · 29/01/2024 12:42

I got my lip pierced in 2020 (between lockdowns), it was a month before my 32nd birthday. So I'm always on the "Do it" side of things if you've wanted it done for a while.
I've had my nose pierced since I was around 16, my kids have never known me without nose and ear piercings, they're teens now and still not (too) embarrassed to have a pierced (and tattoed) mum

NeverAloneNeverAgain · 29/01/2024 12:43

My nose piercing is my favourite one. Had it done early 30s and still love it. I got my tragus and a triple forward helix done not long afterwards. No one even noticed. You can always take it out if you change your mind. Just be gentle when you wash your face for a while as it's easy to forget it's there and can be sore if you catch it for 1st week or so!

Mitherations · 29/01/2024 12:44

Have you ever done anything your mum disapproved of OP?

AcridAndStanLee · 29/01/2024 12:51

I was about your age when I posted the same thread 😂

Get it done! I've changed jobs three times since with zero issues- not even questioned and no one has passed any judgement apart from it looking lovely.

It hurts tho. Prepare for that.

79redballoons · 29/01/2024 12:57

I'm 38 and have had my nose pierced for years. So far my three DC don't seem to be too traumatised

I also have my lip pierced. Oh god my poor children how will they cope with my terrible influence 😂😂

cassy10 · 29/01/2024 12:59

I'm early 40's and got my nose done last autumn! I have lots of ear peircings but no tattoos so didn't have anything to compare it to but OMG did it hurt!!! I nearly fainted! I love the look of it now though. Hope yours went well.

RightSaidFredd0 · 29/01/2024 13:03

Of course you should listen to your mother. Don't you know that getting your nose pierced will turn your children into unemployed crackheads? I have both nostrils pierced so I expect that any children I choose to have will be making their own meth one day.

useitorlose · 29/01/2024 13:03

Go for it! I'm 55 and considering a helix piercing after 40 years of only having bog standard single ear lobe piercings (and definitely no tattoos!)

SomeCatFromJapan · 29/01/2024 13:04

I've had mine since 1996 and I still love it, when I remember that I actually have it as it's just such a part of my appearance now.
