Could you have eaten this?

So ils did a massive turkey Xmas day and a ham joint Boxing Day. We visited for a few days from Boxing Day onwards, on Boxing Day we had the turkey reheated along with the ham. For the remainder of our visit the turkey and the ham came out at every breakfast and lunch and sat on the table for an hour or so with everyone (approx 10 adults and children) touching it. We also had a turkey and ham carbonara one evening.
On the 29th of December fil bagged the remaining meat up and froze it.
We got invited to Sunday dinner yesterday and guess what we had? Turkey and ham pie!

I really didn't want to eat the pie as imo they had waited too long to freeze the meat, it had spent too much time sat at room temperature, everyone had fingered it and it had been reheated at least once possibly twice already.

Dh said I am being ridiculous what do you think?

Yuk no YANBU

MagicFarawayTea · 30/01/2024 22:28

That sounds pretty grim. I wouldn’t be happy eating it either. But it did make me feel quite sentimental about reading ‘The Magic Porridge Pot’ for some reason…🤔

Tree12 · 30/01/2024 22:36

No way - YANBU!

Gobolina · 30/01/2024 23:25

That sounds like an unbelievably large turkey and ham, to me.

Lemonade84 · 30/01/2024 23:42

I only learnt today that...

  1. People heat up turkey the next day. (Only ever considered having it as a cold meat.)
  1. People freeze turkey leftovers. (Maybe it's because I have a dog and any left would go to him.)

Back to the question, I 100% would not have been happy to eat that. 😬

Costco BBQ chickens are fine up to about 10 days.

Nuke in the oven after a few days and good back in the fridge for another few.

Ilovecleaning · 31/01/2024 09:03

I’d be insulted and peed off being offered leftovers so many times.
I never serve leftover food to guests (although a turkey and ham pie on Boxing Day would be ok).
Its PILs fault for buying such a huge turkey. They should plan better.
We had a small number of guests for a buffet on the 27th December. I served beef and salmon freshly cooked which I had bought and frozen before Christmas.
I want to show guests that I have thought about them and made them something nice, not fobbing them off with obvious leftovers.

Ilovecleaning · 31/01/2024 09:33

PS - maybe it’s just me being fussy but being served leftovers makes me feel like an also-ran. We have friends, who are nice people, who invite us for lunch and invariably serve us leftovers. Stew made from lamb from Sunday dinner: minuscule pieces of lamb with loads of veg, half full pots of dips which have been carefully wiped, soups made with whatever is leftover and cooked for ages in slow cooker.
I want to say ‘ FFS! Can you just ONCE buy a pound of minced beef and knock up a chilli or bolognese!’
I know I’m derailing a bit as the OP was asking about eating possibly dodgy meat: I would avoid it, but mainly because I’d be annoyed. 😠

FixitFox · 31/01/2024 09:39

If the meat was cooked and put it in the freezer, it can be kept for a year. Once it was defrosted, it couldn’t be frozen again. That was what my mum told me.

in this case I wouldn’t eat it if i knew “many people had fingered it” and “it has been already 10 days”. Rather sorry than suffer from diarrhoea.

Poshladyjane · 31/01/2024 09:50

Nope. Nope. Nope. Fridge stored annd only til the 3rd day! I’d have politely declined!!

THANK YOU! That's the thread! I thought it was the OP and here it was the husband. Sorry OP of that thread!

Nipsmum · 31/01/2024 13:58

It couldn't have tasted bad and you would have been ill if it had been bad. Stop worrying about things.

KissTheRains · 31/01/2024 14:05

I wouldn't have eaten it, nope.

I don't trust meat as much as other people seem to though.

I'd have frozen it in batches the day it was first cooked and I'd use each batch separately but within a month.

🤢

CountessWindyBottom · 31/01/2024 15:19

I’m barely able to type as I’m dry retching so much. This is absolutely disgusting and unhygienic, YANBU.

😂😂

TheSnakeCharmer · 31/01/2024 16:27

I think that's fine. It was cooked meat..it was out of the fridge for relatively short periods of time. It was then frozen within a few days. We've done this and it's never been a problem.

Mumtobabyhavoc · 31/01/2024 19:40

Ummm, no. Once cooked portions should have been put in freezer for later consumption. It would have been fine to have left overs for the initial couple of days, but only if the meat had been properly refrigerated promptly after cooking.

edited to add:
the temperature variances especially increase bacterial growth (food in/out of fridge several times).

I'm confused, where did 10 days come from? I thought it went in the freezer on 29th, so 4 days?

gottogonow · 31/01/2024 19:49

I am just trying to imagine the turkey being squeezed through the doorway. I got what I thought was a big turkey & it lasted two days. I will dream of the magic ever lasting turkey that provides endless meals. Everything round here just disappears, the fridge door will be going constantly if there’s any left.

Simplelobsterhat · 31/01/2024 19:58

Really? Isn't half the fun of the days after Christmas having lots of leftover food! And in OPs case they were staying several days, it wasn't just one dinner party, so food would go to waste if they could never use things twice in that time. And they are family, so don't need to be formal. The meals your friends served sound nice and home cooked, you are being very precious (and sound like a very expensive guest to keep happy).

FMLWTF · 31/01/2024 23:37

You lot would not want to eat at my parents 😁

The turkey (massive) sits out overnight on the kitchen island - too big for the fridge - with a bit of tin foil round it. I think on subsequent nights it gets shuttled up to the garden shed where they have a table they consider a sort of fridge as it’s cold out there. Definitely still on the go 5 days later by which time they’re deep in turkey curry territory. The ham is smaller so consumed quicker but follows the same general journey.

Don’t get me started on eggs. I have taken to sneaking a fresh box into the house when we visit and surreptitiously swapping them over and binning theirs!
