Could you have eaten this?

So ils did a massive turkey Xmas day and a ham joint Boxing Day. We visited for a few days from Boxing Day onwards, on Boxing Day we had the turkey reheated along with the ham. For the remainder of our visit the turkey and the ham came out at every breakfast and lunch and sat on the table for an hour or so with everyone (approx 10 adults and children) touching it. We also had a turkey and ham carbonara one evening.
On the 29th of December fil bagged the remaining meat up and froze it.
We got invited to Sunday dinner yesterday and guess what we had? Turkey and ham pie!

I really didn't want to eat the pie as imo they had waited too long to freeze the meat, it had spent too much time sat at room temperature, everyone had fingered it and it had been reheated at least once possibly twice already.

Dh said I am being ridiculous what do you think?

We did something similar and had turkey & ham pie on Saturday. No-one got unwell. I also took the leftover cold pie for lunch today doing OK so far🤞

I can't honestly remember the title, but it was something to do with non hand washing after peeing and a downstairs loo with a glass door!

and a FIL obvs

The one I remember was the FIL carving a leg of lamb or some other meat and he had his hand directly on the meat and the OP knew he didn't wash his hands after going pee.

Excuse me, I need to dry heave a few times. 😳

autienotnaughty · 29/01/2024 17:56

Next year I am definitely doing veganuary. I didn't eat the pie. Dh did no illness so far

@Hecatoncheires and @Fannyfiggs

Wait for me, please!
I started singing "Four and Twenty Blackbirds baked in a pie..."
I also remember the piddly penis fingers/hand. Still gagging

OMG the piddly penis fingers 😂😂

Surely the word “fingered” is reserved for teenagers in the 90s? Don’t think I’ve heard it since.

Choking on my fish fingers at this ( I genuinely am eating fish fingers!)

How did she know?
Was she in the loo with him?

Penis fingers?
Especially if he’d has sex recently

Not a pleasant thought!

Oh this made me laugh so much!

Condoms for hands!
Plastic gloves!

Jeevesnotwooster · 29/01/2024 20:09

No way would I have touched that. And I eat most things ( even though immunocompromised and shouldn't).

Bertiesmum3 · 29/01/2024 20:13

if I remember correctly, food can be at room temperature for a maximum of 4 hours after that it’s got to be thrown away

BeGratefulOfGlimmers · 29/01/2024 20:13

I’d have maybe eaten a little bit to try and be polite. I’d expect DH to have a quiet word to suggest how they could plan better next time. At least it’s real meat, my PIL favourite was Bernard Matthews mini kievs - it’s Boxing Day not a children’s tea party. It’s hard to understand what goes on in people’s heads!

Dunnoburt · 29/01/2024 20:17

Yabu.......i hate waste and would be same as ILs..... no point in buying big turkey and ham if you are going to waste it.....even being left out.....wouldn't bother me.AT ALL......

Dunnoburt · 29/01/2024 20:19

Even penis fingers...... just don't think about it.....trust me....ever eaten out?..... you've ingested waaaaay worse!!!!!

Absolutely.
I saw a girl behind a fish and chip shop counter years ago vomit into a bin and then hand the food to someone. {Norovirus?}
Also saw a café worker drop toast onto the floor...she picked it up and served the customer.

Another woman {who was serving me!} blew her nose, snottle blasted through the tissue onto her fingers and she handled the cake and gave it to me.
I was too young and unassertive to say anything...but threw the cake in the bin outside.

This is why we have immune systems..

bringsomewood · 29/01/2024 20:35

If I was in Alone I would have eaten it. Otherwise no thanks.

Simplelobsterhat · 29/01/2024 20:38

Was it definitely all reheated on boxing day? And all put out the other meals? Sounds like it would have been a lot to reheat?

We would only reheat / put out what we thought we'd use that meal, for the hygiene reasons you are thinking of. So we could have reheated meat one meal, but still have some left in the fridge that hasn't been reheated at all. But guests might not realise that's what we'd done.

However, whilst I see your point, I guess a pie cooks long enough to kill off most nasties. I'd probably only refuse it if pregnant or other vulnerabilities.

paddlinglikecrazy · 29/01/2024 21:05

Nope, I wouldn’t have touched it.
My mil will cook meat and just leave the leftovers on the counter in the kitchen all day & night and then try and serve it to us ( and her grandkids ) the following lunchtime 🤢
DH thinks it harks back to when she was growing up and no central heating and freezing kitchen. At over 80 years old she now has her thermostat set to about 28 degrees 🥵 food bacteria dream.

Irishmama100 · 29/01/2024 21:13

Oh god. I felt sick even reading that 🤢. Totally not being unreasonable. That’s something my mother would do. Hence why I NEVER eat her food!

Xmasbaby11 · 30/01/2024 18:06

it wouldn't bother me. This what my parents do, though I don't and I am careful about following guidelines. I am going to make turkey and ham pie on Sunday with the leftovers and hope noone complains!

Feedthatgoat · 30/01/2024 18:16

Must have been a very big turkey.

pollymere · 30/01/2024 19:46

We have a turkey and ham on Christmas Day. We usually carve off slices for Boxing Day and then strip the carcass. The ham tends to be carved as we go along tbf. I probably wouldn't put the whole thing out, again just slices or use a chunk to make a pie or similar. If they were leaving out the whole turkey or ham and the pie wasn't made from meat frozen on Boxing Day, I'd probably be a bit reluctant to eat it too. The ham would probably be fine but a turkey sitting out and being reheated is asking for trouble.

ellyeth · 30/01/2024 19:53

I don't think you are meant to freeze cooked meat unless it is straight away - certainly not if it has been left unfrozen for several days.

I would have been a bit worried about eating the pie but I suppose I would have. I don't think you are being unduly fussy.

It seems it had no ill effects but perhaps that's just good luck.

I would also be very sick of turkey and ham after 3 days, let alone 5.

Sillyname63 · 30/01/2024 20:06

Bloody he'll how big was this turkey? 10 people fed daily multiple meals for 5 days and still some left over!! I would probably think it's a bit dodgy by the 29th tbh , so wouldn't have frozen it.

This is what I've been wondering. Must have been a dinosaur sized turkey and ham to feed that many people for days on end Grin

Kbroughton · 30/01/2024 20:44

I think it's a generational thing. My mum and dad leave turkey out for waaayy longer than I am happy with. They also leave other foods out without refrigerating sometimes, don't cover food propeerly. Go on about eggs never used to have sell by dates etc. To a an extent they have a point, we are a bit to cautious now, although 10 days too long for me!

GlitteryRainbow · 30/01/2024 20:53

You should only keep Turkey for 48 hours. I refuse to eat it after this. I have a delicate stomach so need to be a bit careful. YANBU. If you are going to freeze it you do it straight away.
