To open my window on the bus

notknowledgeable · 28/01/2024 12:17

It seems to be a mission for some people to fight to have all the windows on the bus closed, for all of every journey? Why? Before covid this wasn't an issue - now it seems people have a point to make.

I get there can be a chilly draught, but just put your coat on, or put your hood up?

I am immunocompromised, and wear a mask and open the window on my way to and from work. Every single time I get ill, ( currently a couple of times a month) my classes are left with non specialist agency staff. I take all the precautions I reasonably can to keep from catching anything, but this constant battle on the bus every working day is really wearing my down.

Hahahahmy mum hates opened window as says she gets ill from it so she actually stands up, and shuts every window in the bus and if anyone has any issiues, she tells them off.

Really, that's not very nice. I hope people just ignore her telling them off. Windows are there for a reason. Does she walk through the bus, lean over people and close them?

Januarydayssss · 28/01/2024 13:34

@HappyHamsters she lives in different country so this is more commonly there, people are like that there.

Moveoverdarlin · 28/01/2024 13:36

It’s January. The week before last it was -7 on my commute to work. So yes, I’d be annoyed if people opened the window on a bus. May to September I probably wouldn’t care. I don’t drive with my window open in winter so same goes for the bus I guess.

Roundtoedshoes · 28/01/2024 13:37

Unfortunately your own personal reasons do not get to dictate what others do on public transport. Wasting energy on it is pointless.

Limited options are using private transport (car/taxi), or asking people if they mind the windows open. I’m not sure I’d want to sit on a freezing bus, so you don’t trump others.

It also a stretch to say any illness you get stems from this.

ThinWomansBrain · 28/01/2024 13:38

not if its chucking if down with rain

Deliadidit · 28/01/2024 13:46

I saw a bus today that the upstairs was so fogged up you could barely see the passengers - how gross breathing that air in!

I guess one person isn't better than the other - some don't like a chill it might flare up their lumbago lol

Why do you get to choose?

Because Op is immune compromised, that's why. The other people on the bus are fortunate not to be. I am the same currently due to serious illness. I am lucky i don't have to travel by bus. I detest masks and struggle to wear them but very occasionally do. I wore one to take our cat to the vets a couple of days ago and a woman sat openly staring at me the whole time . Wish I'd told her my health condition now. I think people think any mask wearer nowadays is wearing them due to covid. Most aren't but if they wanted to it's up to them.

Prelapsarianhag · 28/01/2024 13:49

I still wear a mask on the bus, and when the hacking coughs and soggy sneezes get going I feel very justified. Its not just about covid, I don't want noro, or flu or any other fucking virus. Last week a woman got on and slammed all the windows shut giving me a very nasty look - I had not opened them. The people who really annoy me are the cunts who sit on the outside seat leaving an empty seat by the window.

Housebuyer37 · 28/01/2024 13:51

Yep I call it window wars. I am firmly on the side of open windows.

fortifiedwithtea · 28/01/2024 13:56

OP I’d welcome you on the bus. As menopausal and overweight I feel the heat.

Is there any possibility of you cycling to work?

That is not going to happen! No one is going to have to leave a class without a teacher because of a chilly draught on the bus

It's not your window.

The window by my seat then, if you want to be pedantic

Windows should always be open on public transport. Surely people are wearing coats if it's a cold day anyway? Honestly the thought of all those germs and no fresh air circulating is absolutely vile.

2024HappyNewYear · 28/01/2024 13:07

I'd be annoyed with you. I hate sitting in a cold draft. You'd be making me really uncomfortable.

So be uncomfortable then - it is not the same as leaving students without a teacher is it. Most bus journeys are pretty uncomfortable either way.

A point to make? Maybe they’re cold?!

Even with the windows open, being on a bus is surely still risky for you. Kindly, maybe it’s time to explore alternative transport options.

such as what exactly? if there was an alternative, don't you think Id be using it?

I don’t think one or two windows open on a bus is going to stop you picking up viruses.

It certainly helps

As it’s almost always the person behind you whose face it blows in, it’s polite to ask them if it bothers them.

There is never anyone behind me when I open the window. The bus fills up with window slammers later on in the journey

I’d be irritated by someone opening windows on a cold day. Just because you’re immunocompromised OP, doesn’t mean everyone else has to be cold.

DisforDarkChocolate · 28/01/2024 14:16

The thing is when you open the window near you it's people sitting in other places who get a horrible cold draft on the back of the next.

Bus windows need to more flexible so you can have some ventilation without it getting cold.

Alwaysalwayscold · 28/01/2024 14:16

I don't think public transport is for you..

sure, not every illness, but many do. it is the only time I am that close to people, and it is the only time I'm ever stuck in an unventilated space

I'm not well enough to cycle or walk or un to work, when I am fit and well, I do. but that is likely to be years away still

Isn't a class room a bug fest anyway? You must be quite close to the students I would of thought

I'm not immunocompromised but I'd rather be cold than catch a virus.
