Holiday queue situation - what should be done

Currently on a cruise….. this is not a comment about pros and cons as I know what a lot of MN think of cruises.

today we arrived at a US port.

everyone had to clear security even if they did not intend to get off.. instructions were clearly issued.

  1. morning excursions to queue at relevant point at 0730
  2. independents and after noon excursions to go from 0700 onwards to collect a numbered ticket. Tickets would then be called in blocks once the morning excursions are processed.

i was awake anyway so at 0640 I wandered to the collection point for our numbers. When it started I got 53 and 54.

Around 0745 they called numbers 1-150 so we leave our breakfast and go queue at immigration.

There were people joking the queue with numbers over 150. Then there were morning excursion people who. Clearly hadn’t listened to the instructions and now wanted to push ahead of those who actually followed the system.

AIBU for thinking both sets should be told to wait for either their correct numbers or in the case of the excursion idiots go to the back of the queue as they’d missed their slot entirely.

i also think people who get to airport security and don’t have their electronics and liquids ready should be made to go to the back of the queue.

Sounds hellish

AHFaemale · 28/01/2024 09:02

I gave up when I read your thoughts about people needing to have electronics ready at airport security or be sent back. You sound like an unreasonable person. Glad I'm not on a cruise in airport queue with you.

historygeek · 28/01/2024 09:02

But you were number 54 and they'd called numbers 1-50
THAT'S NOT THE ROOOOLS

The rules apply to everyone - it’s not an a la carte menu.

just like people showing up on the dining room in Shorts - the dress code is for a reason. Shorts = buffet.

Ahhh, it’s one of those sorts of cruises! Pray tell, what’s the difference between wearing a pair of shorts and wearing a short dress, where both items show the same amount of leg?

cheezncrackers · 28/01/2024 09:05

Thanks for this thread - it makes me feel totally justified in never wanting to go on a cruise! Hell is other people and having to queue up with stupid, entitled arseholes just to get off the fucking ship would drive me insane.

donquixotedelamancha · 28/01/2024 09:07

This is a holiday to you OP?

I feel vindicated in my previous decision never to go on a cruise. It sounds worse than I imagined.

KateLizAn · 28/01/2024 09:10

Echo the above. Has confirmed cruises not for me 😆

backatschool · 28/01/2024 09:11

Crikey, I'm never going on a cruise.

You might want to reread that bit Grin

maddening · 28/01/2024 09:17

The morning excursion should have been an entirely different queue imo, there should have been 2 queues -

q1 "morning excursion 1st come first served.

Q2 : Independent and afternoon excursion by ticket block.

Yanbu re people with wrong ticket numbers jumping the queue though.

Morning excursions knew to be there for 0730 and had until 0745 to get in the queue.

absolutely no reason not the be there on time apart from laziness or not giving a shit.

FFS, they're on holiday, it's not a military operation. Were they told that it absolutely had to be before 7.45 or else? Expecting all of them to be there and processed by 7.45 was fairly bonkers organisation on the part of the cruise operators. It would have made much more sense to say that the excursion people should collect between 7.30 and 8, and have the rest start collecting from around 815 onwards. It would also have made sense to avoid calling people out of breakfast. And indeed to hand out tickets the night before.

It's the people running the cruise you need to moan at, not your fellow passengers.

Why does it matter what other people choose to wear? If shorts are OK for a buffet, they are OK for other meals.

I don't think cruises are really for you, OP. You clearly can't take travelling with other people and you're far too rule-bound.

GintyMcGinty · 28/01/2024 09:24

You are on a mass holiday experience.

You need to chill and go with the flow or you will be miserable.

As for the airport - I fly a lot and am prepared for security. But I understand that lots of other passengers fly once a year or less and many are unfamiliar with expectations and sometimes nervous. Not everyone can be as perfect as you

Also I often pay for fast track to skip it all. 😀

candaby653 · 28/01/2024 09:24

To be fair now, My fancy food
Would taste worse if I know John at table 47 was wearing shorts and not long trousers

There's always one to ruin it for the rest

Have you ever been on a cruise? You have to dress up for dinner at the restaurants. Buffet you wear whatever you like.

RoachFish · 28/01/2024 09:36

Never been on a cruise and will never either due to environmental reasons but I honestly thought they would be a relaxing experience for people who like to just switch off and not have to plan and organise for themselves. This sounds more like you are cattle and the farmer is moving you from pasture to pasture. Why anyone would want to spend their holiday like that? To top it off, if you are 15 minutes late to stand in your designated queue you get angry looks from people like the OP. Please unclench.

The last cruise I went on was 30 years ago and that was the rule then. Extraordinary that it is still the case.

I really can't understand wanting to go on a holiday that is so circumscribed by rules. It sounds the reverse of relaxing.

Loopytiles · 28/01/2024 09:42

Have never been on a cruise but find youtube videos and things like this about them fascinating!

WandaWonder · 28/01/2024 09:42

Same when boarding planes people don't listen

HalloumiGeller · 28/01/2024 09:43

You're not wrong, it seems the ability to follow basic instructions has been lost on people these days 🙄

ThinWomansBrain · 28/01/2024 09:43

sounds like hell
