To think the middle classes drink heavily?

I've been a private nanny for over two decades for some highly educated, middle/upper class families. It's an observation of mine that a lot of them drink quite heavily. I'm talking about every night, a few bottles of wine and usually some G&T's between the parents.
I know this as I take in their grocery shopping so I see the contents. Often, when they get home from work a bottle is opened straight away and I'm offered a tipple. Sometimes I accept so I'm not bashing anyone!
I know some live in nannies who tell me the parents they work for are getting sloshed each night. I've had children tell me, 'mummy was throwing up in the night' and the mum will casually say to me 'oh you know sometimes it's better to just get it out'!
As I said, not a bashing thread. More of an observation. I believe there are quite a few middle class lushes who seem to go unnoticed as they work in high powered jobs as opposed to the average unemployed alcoholic who is more obvious due to their lifestyle.
No offence to anyone. Just an observation I thought about recently.

I agree, lots of our friends are like this. I don’t know how they do it, I wouldn’t be able to function! It’s somehow seen as funny 🤷‍♀️

EssexMan55 · 26/01/2024 16:06

It's not a middle class thing. The working classes do it too, as do the upper classes. Its a British thing to drink to excess regularly.

Hillarious · 26/01/2024 16:09

I don't think you can generalise here.

Wonderwoman333 · 26/01/2024 16:09

I agree with this

NisekoWhistler · 26/01/2024 16:11

Yes this is very true. My friend who is a consultant psychiatrist says she's seen the affects of this level drinking in her geriatric patients.

Furrt · 26/01/2024 16:13

I think affordability does come into it, particularly if drinking wine. Decent bottles are minimum £10 now so you need to be earning good money. I think British people do drink excessively in general and you may be right that middle classes drink more. Stressful jobs and they use this to wind down. Not good though and very expensive.

Floralnomad · 26/01/2024 16:14

I think it’s a stupid generalisation , lots of people drink regularly in the UK - working , middle and upper class if you want to use those terms to define people . I don’t think it’s more prevalent amongst a certain type of person .

Pottedpalm · 26/01/2024 16:14

I don’t think you should gossip about your employers, it’s very unprofessional.

How long before the deletion message. This one reeks of goady fucker.

I don't work for them anymore. I haven't named any names. It's not unprofessional, it's anonymous and just a discussion.

I'm middle class and barely drink at all. I'm just over a year into a health kick. I'd imagine the other middle class women I work out with are much the same. It seems silly to waste all that hard work on toxins.

Hubblebubble · 26/01/2024 16:21

However, studies have shown that university educated women who drink do drink more than those who didn't go. The findings claimed it was because we tend to have more mixed sex friendships and got into the habit of keeping up with male levels of drinking.

I'm sorry, what do you mean?

I tend to agree. My parents pretend they don’t drink much but they drink far more than me and lots of wine and g&t, oh and my dad loves fancy craft beers

nannysecrets · 26/01/2024 16:29

I'm not saying all do. Sorry, I didn't mean any offence. I don't see why people comment negatively when it's just a discussion posted anonymously.

Oh its definitely true. I know it for a fact because I watch a lot of TV dramas featuring Middle class people living aspirational lifestyles, huge houses. They always have a bottle of wine on the go.

Usually drinking from large glasses, as well.

Bananalanacake · 26/01/2024 16:35

I'm from a middle/working class background and my mum made me think only 'common' people drink alcohol in front of their DC. I assume she meant it was ok to drink when the DC weren't about. I've never seen either of my parents drunk, thought this was normal growing up, as a result I rarely drink, DH is TT. It varies between families I suppose.

justanotherusername22 · 26/01/2024 16:39

@Floralnomad Research says you're wrong. The wealthier part of society are drinking more on average

LaurieFairyCake · 26/01/2024 16:41

Alcohol consumption is huge in the middle classes, almost everyone I see is drinking well over the recommended levels.

It's because of work stress in the main (I see it in my therapy room).

They're using alcohol or drugs to cope with symptoms of burn out.

I'm not exempt either, I notice myself drinking more than one glass on a shit day.

That makes sense. Whenever I get petrol in the way back from work, I see a lot of men buying a ready meal and eight cans.

The MC get their wine delivered Grin

It's not a British thing. There are plenty of other countries who regularly drink to excess, in Europe and Asia.
