To think the middle classes drink heavily?

nannysecrets · 26/01/2024 16:01

I've been a private nanny for over two decades for some highly educated, middle/upper class families. It's an observation of mine that a lot of them drink quite heavily. I'm talking about every night, a few bottles of wine and usually some G&T's between the parents.
I know this as I take in their grocery shopping so I see the contents. Often, when they get home from work a bottle is opened straight away and I'm offered a tipple. Sometimes I accept so I'm not bashing anyone!
I know some live in nannies who tell me the parents they work for are getting sloshed each night. I've had children tell me, 'mummy was throwing up in the night' and the mum will casually say to me 'oh you know sometimes it's better to just get it out'!
As I said, not a bashing thread. More of an observation. I believe there are quite a few middle class lushes who seem to go unnoticed as they work in high powered jobs as opposed to the average unemployed alcoholic who is more obvious due to their lifestyle.
No offence to anyone. Just an observation I thought about recently.

As pp said, the data supports you that there is an issue with overdrinking amongst the middle classes.

And its such a thing isn't it? With all the 'wine o'clock'memes and similar jokes amongst middle class mothers in particular. I don't think its helpful.

It's not a middle class thing. The working classes do it too, as do the upper classes. Its a British thing to drink to excess regularly.

However how we perceive it differs.

The working class Mom looking rough on the school run because she had two bottles of wine last night is a shit parent and a bad influence
Her middle class counterpart, hiding behind designer glasses, is letting off steam, rewarding herself for hard work, making sure she's more than just a Mom.
Much like kids in ratty clothes. One is a sign that you're the shit of society, one that you're so cool for not caring

Btw continuously saying you aren't meaning to offend anyone is making it really sound more offensive. Do you need a shovel?

Crunchymum · 26/01/2024 16:48

I'm sure the riff raff are at it too. They just can't afford nannies who post their business on MN 😂

peachgreen · 26/01/2024 16:49

Well, the main reason I don't drink more wine is because I can't afford it – so I can believe this!

Surely we can discuss these things.

Its not offensive its just a discussion and is actually backed by data.

Definitely not just a British thing either lol

Laiste · 26/01/2024 16:52

What i do know is it's more socially acceptable to be swigging glasses of wine and joking about needing it than necking a can of Stella ...

Its really not offensive to discuss a real social trend like this on a chat forum.

If it offends you, that is a matter for you to resolve in yourself, not to try to externalise your personal feelings through attacking others.

TheBayLady · 26/01/2024 16:55

I lived a very middle class life and the number of functioning alcoholics was huge. Wine was drank like water. I knew so many wives that hit the wine as soon as they had done the school run ( and often before). So many Husbands that opened the beer fridge as soon as they came through the door. It was normal to ask visitors if they wanted a alcoholic drink even at midday on a weekend. A G&T was like having a coffee. So much casual drinking. Now it's drink and cocaine.

Allfur · 26/01/2024 16:57

There are heavy drinkers in all walls of life across the world

EverySporkIsSacred · 26/01/2024 16:57

I don't find the discussion offensive. I find it mildly amusing that the OP keeps saying they don't mean to be offensive. That's all.
I'm not even middle-class (but I did clearly read the room wrongly!).

It's not a British thing. There are plenty of other countries who regularly drink to excess, in Europe and Asia.

I agree with both posts.
There are plenty of other countries where people drink excessively. There are plenty of middle class families who don’t drink.
There are plenty of working class families who drink a lot.

Maybe you tend to choose a certain type of employers and this type likes drinking?

Im pretty sure if a woman who worked at an unnamed shop made an observation about her customers there wouldn't be faux outrage about professionalism.

As it stands, there are Dry January threads all over the place but heaven forbid suggesting that the middle class (or any for that matter since its so widespread) might have an issue with the sauce.

It's true, I've seen adverts for 'why mummy drinks' and the tipsy housewife'.

I agree OP, not sure they drink more than those who are considered working class but it's definitely more socially acceptable.

Also, getting my hard hat out now, - ditto for casual drug taking.

Bargello · 26/01/2024 17:06

Some people, of whatever class, drink to excess. Most don't.

LindorDoubleChoc · 26/01/2024 17:06

I really don't think excessive drinking is a class thing. Odd thread, very odd.

Oh calm down. Most other comments on here are supporting, saying that they agree or posting articles of evidence.
I was reiterating that I wasn't trying to offend anyone as there is always someone who gets upset about a post for whatever their personal reason.

sleekcat · 26/01/2024 17:09

I would say this is true. I know lots of people like this - not actually getting sloshed, but definitely drinking nightly and more than they should. It's made out to be a 'normal' way to destress and relax. I've also worked in a supermarket and seen who buys what - middle classes in their 40s and older buy the most alcohol by far.

I don’t think you should gossip about your employers, it’s very unprofessional.

Yes, the lower orders mustn't comment on their betters on an anonymous forum.

Oh the riff raff are definitely at it. I didn't say they weren't. I mentioned the middle class are they are generally not associated with heavy drinking in the media. The riff raff as you call them are all at it too. But it's no surprise when they do.
Plus, I'm not outing anyone. It's all said anonymously.

Some absolutely unhinged comments to your perfectly reasonable, non-personal and evidence based observation OP. Some of the MC mummies here must have already hit the pinot.

Lorrymum · 26/01/2024 17:12

Im always astonished at the amount of empties put out in the glass recycling bins in my "middle class" road.
