Interesting so many people say that they wouldn’t let their children fight for this country, and that they would rather live under whatever regime the invading force imposed.
Have you any idea what invasion involves?
Imagine you’re the leader of an invading army. When you arrive on the shore of the target country you want to advance as far as possible with as little resistance as possible. You’ve heard that the locals don’t want to fight, that they have publicly stated they will submit, but can you be really sure that’s true? Is it worth the risk to go in without a plan? What if they change their minds?
Who is most likely to put up a viable resistance? Due to size, weight and strength differences that’s generally young men. So, who are you going to target first? Round up some of the local men where you land, kill or torture them and ensure that no one is tempted to put up any form of resistance. Do this in every town you reach.
Rape the women and girls, it’s a terror tactic of war as old as time itself. If the husbands, partners or fathers try to intervene kill them. And then kill the women they were defending.
Impose restrictions on movement and ban freedom of assembly, at least until everyone has given up all hope of being free. Make the demands for compliance onerous, that way when you loosen your grip people are fooled into thinking that they have their liberty back.
Ban discussions about life before invasion unless it follows the party line - life was bad before, but now we love our new society. If access to communications poses a risk to successful compliance by the locals then deny them access to it. Elderly people can be dangerous, they remember the time before complacency, when people helped their neighbours and believed in being proud of the freedoms accorded to them by their country. Make it known that reminiscing can lead to imprisonment. If no one can remember the Before time, then no one can reliably judge whether things are better or worse.
The last country-wide invasion of England was in 1066. For the last thousand years the citizens have generally considered invasion to be undesirable and understood that in order to repel invaders it was necessary to maintain a trained force of fighting age men in sufficient numbers to make a difference.
Apathy to defend against invaders, coupled with insiders trying to overthrow the existing system gave us William of Orange.
