To dob him in for driving while banned?

I found out yesterday that my exH got a year-long driving ban last summer for drink and drug-driving. He's been picking up the DC on contact days and driving them places.

He's a nasty piece of work who believes himself to be an innocent victim in a world out to get him. Nothing is ever his fault, he made my life hell and he lets the kids down.

WIBU to get video evidence of him driving and send it to the police?

No way would he be driving my children. He is unlicensed and therefore also uninsured.

Spencer0220 · 25/01/2024 10:17

Absolutely this. He was reckless enough to drug drive.

Who says he won't drive recklessly with them?

Craver · 25/01/2024 10:18

You would be doing society a favour, and perhaps him in the long-run.

Would it be appropriate to discuss with your solicitor as he is putting your children at risk?

Alwaysalwayscold · 25/01/2024 10:18

Why are you allowing them in the car with him?

Foxblue · 25/01/2024 10:19

I'd report him, on the basis that he clearly doesn't respect how serious the offence was - he could have killed someone. People really minimise driving under the influence.
It might have knock on effects to you/your kids, but if he does it again (likely, seeing as he doesn't seem to give a shit he's been banned) and ends up hurting someone (or god forbid, your kids) you'd feel awful that you hadn't done everything in your power to try and stop him (not that it's your responsibility, but you are human and would)

OP only found out yesterday so there's every chance she won't be allowing them to go with him again!

Why are you allowing them in the car with him?

It's literally the first four words of her post 🙄

rainbowsparkle28 · 25/01/2024 10:26

YANBU. I would also seriously be considering letting your children be with him when he is potentially putting them at risk and clearly doesn't care about driving under the influence or whilst banned 🙄 Seek legal advice if you need to.

orangeleopard · 25/01/2024 10:26

I absolutely despise people who drink/drive under the influence. You’re not only putting yourself, but every single person that you share the road or even people who are just walking down the streets life in danger. And the fact that he is driving with your children in the car?! Does he have no morals. I take prescribed pain medication and don’t even drive whilst on them, despite needing them. Yet there are idiots who willingly drink or take drugs and drive, it’s disgusting.

Plexie · 25/01/2024 10:27

I don't think you necessarily have to film him. Notify the police of his name and address (and maybe the time of day he is likely to drive away/return to his property) and they can send out a patrol to catch him in the act.

Admittedly, I only know that from seeing one TV documentary so it might not be that easy in everyday life.

Wanna17 · 25/01/2024 10:27

Yep, dob him in! It's selfish unfair on the rest of us road users that's he's uninsured let alone the consequences if he had an accident with your kids in the car! I should imagine if he's happy to drive while banned he's also still using drink and drugs while driving!

Haydenn · 25/01/2024 10:28

Absolutely, how can you ever be confident he isn’t under the influence when your children are in the car?

sunflowerhearts · 25/01/2024 10:29

Definitely. He shouldn't be driving your kids around

So she did, I'll put it down to baby brain!

I was wondering this but would the police bother to investigate? If they knock on his door and ask him if he's been driving then he'll say no and be tipped off. If I give them video evidence then they have something to go on.

For the PP who asked why I let the DC in the car with him - I only found out yesterday! Obviously they won't be going anywhere in his car now.

tweedlledum · 25/01/2024 10:31

I certainly would! He's a risk to everyone behind the wheel. You'd never forgive yourself if he killed or seriously injured someone.

redalex261 · 25/01/2024 10:35

Report him. Today. As mentioned upthread you don’t need video evidence, just his personal details, the vehicle would probably be helpful and if you know any regular pattern of driving. Please don’t do anything to put yourself at risk - you don’t want him to know it is you who reported him.

Tessisme · 25/01/2024 10:35

I would tell him he wasn't driving the DC anywhere and I would also report him. The fact that he is driving illegally is bad enough, but the reason for the ban makes it even worse, as he could quite easily be driving your DC around while intoxicated.

BlowDryRat · 25/01/2024 10:41

I know what his car looks like but don't have the reg. I've checked our Ring camera for footage of him driving but sadly it doesn't have anything. I'll do some (low-risk) detective work.

OP posts:
acatcalledjohn · 25/01/2024 10:42

He's uninsured. Heaven forbid he has an accident whilst your kids are in the car with him.

Report him.

MrsSkylerWhite · 25/01/2024 10:43

Yes, report him before he kills someone. Do not let your children near him until this is dealt with.

paintingvenice · 25/01/2024 10:45

Don’t waste your time with detective work. Contact the police, let them know your concerns. There’s enough bloody cctv and traffic cameras about that they should be able to find evidence of his car moving about.

Leeds2 · 25/01/2024 10:47

I know someone who did this, and it wasn’t as easy as you might think! My friend had to give the registration numbers of the cars that he drove, details of frequent routes that he used with estimated times and a photo of him for identification purposes. They wouldn’t accept a photo of him driving as evidence. I don’t know if she tried a video. He is still driving, many, many months later.

goingtotown · 25/01/2024 10:53

Contact the police 100%. Do it today.

Dotjones · 25/01/2024 10:54

YABU for even considering not doing it. Don't wait until you have evidence, give the police the information you currently know and they can keep an eye out for him.
