To think that preparing for war with Russia is total madness?

General Patrick Sanders, our top general, warns troops ‘must be prepared to fight Russia in the battlefield’.

There is increasing acceptance of the idea that we could somehow fight a limited war with Russia. I just don’t believe this.

Leaving aside that our military consists of a toy battleship and an old man with a wooden gun (only slight hyperbole), have people wished nukes away?

I am very curious as to what this war would look like. Are they envisaging that there would be a limited battlefield and a list of allowed weapons and that the loser would shake hands and walk away?

I think we are perilously close to the total annihilation of Homo sapiens (which would happen in a nuclear war). We, meaning the west and, especially, the increasingly jingoistic UK, need to dial back the rhetoric and look for a way to find peace, even if we have to compromise on our principles.

Interested in what people think and whether people do think that AIBU.

Russia reunited is his current goal but the guy is a megalomaniac - I doubt you'd find any credible analyst that thinks he'd achieve that and then just stop. And I'd much rather nip this in the bud (plus keep Ukraine's sovereignty) than placate a bully and take a gamble...

coldcallerbaiter · 21/01/2024 21:25

Is pissing off the dictators ego, nipping it in the bud? Or creating a vendetta? It’s about him saving face.

Btw I hate his guts

L1ttledrummergirl · 21/01/2024 21:39

The only country that gets a say in whether Ukraine is conquered by Russia is Ukraine.

They said no.

It is right that the rest of Europe supports their neighbours, and America as the biggest ally.

Fuck off with the fear mongering, it happens everytime Russia has a setback and it's getting boring. Russia is currently relying on weapons from North Korea, and treating its men as disposable. That says it all.

DeltaCity · 21/01/2024 21:46

this is why we need a one world govt, to prevent nations with advanced weapons, risking the whole of humanity

Finbrek · 21/01/2024 21:54

If Ireland was getting attacked, I would be up for acting…

Lol. Ireland only ever gets attacked by Britain.

who says or presumes it would be ? i was thinking along the lines of the federation style one world govt similar to the star trek version, besides considering how the elites get together at bilderberg meetings, i dont see how we dont already have a majority of a one world govt

Also what about when humanity reaches the stars lets say the Asguard come to an agreement to prove the united kingdom various advanced technologies , and we choose to only share and equip our allies, how long before other countries would be willing to go to war to acquire the tech ?

another reason for a one world govt

IHS · 21/01/2024 22:31

I don't watch bloody star trek 😂

It would have to be a dictatorship because too many people would be involved (9 billion) in order for them to have a democratic vote.

We don't even have a one country government that agrees on stuff.

When our generals were warning Russia was preparing to annexe Crimea, posters on here were saying it will never happen. It did.
When our generals were warning Russia was preparing for an invasion into Ukraine, posters were on here saying it will never happen. It did.

And now our generals are warning that Russia is preparing for war with NATO and that we must prepare the troops.
When will people like you listen.

I'm sorry to break this to you, but Star Trek is fiction. It's not really happening 😬

BabaBarrio · 21/01/2024 22:56

It’s not madness, Russia is your closest threat right now. I’ve seen the reports of your Air Force chasing off Russian fighter jets flirting with U.K. airspace, the Russian warships and submarines going through the channel and accidentally straying too close to your coast so the navy sends out a destroyer and subs of its own.

Russia has been probing and provoking the U.K. since before Covid. The U.K. sending military aid to Ukraine is the perfect excuse to try something larger scale like take over the neglected Orkney Islands for example.

I don’t think we are close to a nuclear war. We got a lot closer several times a year during the Cold War.

i was explaining how the federation or one world govt, would not be a dictatorship

Greenshake · 21/01/2024 22:57

coldcallerbaiter · 21/01/2024 20:52

I think Russia should be allowed to win in Ukraine. Let the dictator die off. Russia will not keep Ukraine long term anyway. If Ukraine wants to fight let them. Do not get involved. I do not want a big war to prevent a tiny one.

Do you have any idea how ridiculous you sound? Not to mention shortsighted, inhumane and irrational.

not sure who said the quote but if you want peace then prep for war

Alcyoneus · 21/01/2024 22:58

NATO is a job creation scheme for useless generals and diplomats who get pushed out by domestic defence forces. It needs US tax dollars to stay alive. It is in the interest of these leeches to perpetuate fear of war. Otherwise how would they get their paycheck.

Always follow the money.

DeltaCity · 21/01/2024 22:59

"The phrase is adapted from a statement found in Roman author Publius Flavius Vegetius Renatus's tract Dē Rē Mīlitārī (fourth or fifth century AD), in which the actual phrasing is Igitur quī dēsīderat pācem, præparet bellum ("Therefore let him who desires peace prepare for war.")."

If Trump wins the US presidential election and follows through on leaving NATO, the odds tip towards Russia expanding their war.

It’s always the bloody UK, or USA, who puts themselves forward for these situations. We really are stupid. Other countries just sit back because they know we are always good for offering ourselves up if there’s any drama anywhere. We think we’re being bold, brave and big, when the reality is we’re just putting a very large target on our backs, whilst other countries are playing it safe and keeping their heads down.

Floatinginatincan · 21/01/2024 21:07

Of course we should prepare & our forces are always prepared to go to war. Doesn't necessarily mean it's imminent. As a Naval family, I find your assessment of our skills & resources a little offensive. The British Navy is the best in the world

I don’t know much about our Navy, but I had the impression that it was doing a good job. Russia has been testing our naval defences for a long time. Nearly 20 years ago, I knew a Royal Navy officer who cheerfully told me he’d recently encountered a Russian submarine in UK waters and how it had turned into a sort of cat-and-mouse game, with the Russian submarine trying to follow the UK vessel around and vice versa.

It’s concerning that Russia’s surveillance of our waters has increased in the last few years, but according to a recent documentary, the Royal Navy has increased its own surveillance patrols and I don’t believe that Russia would find it easy to invade the UK.

I also doubt that Russia is currently capable of fighting a war on multiple fronts. Putin hasn’t been defeated in Ukraine, but neither has he carried out the swift coup that he planned. He is stuck in a punishing war of attrition, which is destroying parts of Ukraine, but is also wearing down Russian morale and resources.
