To not want a great big satellite dish on the front of our house?

DH wants to get Sky. I hardly watch any television, the DC watch too much already, and I hate satellite dishes. DH got me to agree to it as it comes with free Broadband.

They have just been around to install it, and the only place they can put the dish is right on the front of the house. I don't satellite dishes and I know our neighbour( we live in a semi-detached house) will hate it. She doesn't even have a TV.

So I sent them away and said I'd discuss it with DH. He's going to be very pissed off.

Do you think I am being unreasonable?

no not at all. i don't get why sky are so reliant on satellite dishes anyway. surely they can rely on cable/digi-boxes like all the other companies by now? I was thinking of going with sky as BT are beyond terrible and our contract expires next month. But we live in a flat and i'm not sure about the whole satellite dish thing tbh. where would it even go? and they're so tacky looking.

lollipopmother · 19/03/2008 14:18

Sky dishes are tiny now, probably about 1/4 of the size that they used to be. Plus they are black instead of those white ones!

MorocconOil · 19/03/2008 14:22

They might be smaller and black, but like totalmisfit says they're so tacky looking.

Hello, I am a new member so please go gentle with me! I have Sky at my house, the dish is really pretty small and inobtrusive and for the amount of time I spend looking at the front of my house in comparison with the amount of time I spend loving my Sky Plus facility I think its well worth it.

MaryAnnSmotheredinchocolate · 19/03/2008 14:38

do you know, the satellite stuck on the side/front of our house very nearly put me off buying it ! however,I';ve got used to it and it doesn't really affect the look of the house - it's just that we'd never had one before. We only keep it because the tv reception is so bad it's the only way to get a decent picture.

MorocconOil · 19/03/2008 14:44

Hello arthursmum

I think I could just about get used to it, but the more I think about it our neighbour will detest it. It's just next to her front door.

No-one else in the street has one.

Some neighbourhoods don't allow satellite dishes in the front, mostly new estates.

You'd better check and see if it's permissable.

moondog · 19/03/2008 14:46

Gah,you should try living in Turkey (as we did) Every building is covered in huge rusting dishes. One day some workmen came to my flat and asked if they could use our balcony to fit the neighbours tv.I went out and discovered them attempting to put up three huge buggers!

Iota · 19/03/2008 14:49

can't you put it on the roof? ours is tucked between the chimney and the roof - you can hardly see it

MorocconOil · 19/03/2008 14:53

They said putting it on a chimney would possibly work for an extra cost. An outside contractor would have to do it. I think that's what I find so distasteful about it all. They just seem to want more and more of your money....and I don't even want it in the first place.

If you do go ahead, a word of warning, a few weeks after we had our dish fitted, there were some massive rainstorms and we sprung a leak in our roof. When we got a roofing guy out he told us that the Sky person has dislodged some tiles when he fed wires over and that a massive amount of calls he gets to fix leaks are caused by Sky fitters. I would suggest being an eagle eyed harpie and make sure they take care up there.
I think any hassle caused by your neighbour would be quickly outweighed by the twenty minutes or so peace and quiet that CBeebies can provide!
I don't know if I live on a particularly rough estate, but pretty much everyone has a dish on their house. They look so magical lit up by the flashes of gunfire of an evening...

LIZS · 19/03/2008 15:13

Can you get an independent installer , they can often find more discreet locations . Ours is up on the ridge to compensate for house being tile hung and the tall trees to the front.

Heifer · 19/03/2008 16:07

I am not sure why they could only put it at the front of your house? I understand that that might be the best place for it - but surely not only place..

We live in a conservation area and the sjky dishes are not allowed to be at the front of our house, so I told the sky man and he put it at the back of the house, no problem.

My DH is like you - he hates that, in fact he turned down the first one years ago for being too big - even he didn't complain about the one we had fitted yesterday, tis very small in comparison, and the wires (white to match our house) were neatly fitted around the house.

I would phone up sky and have a word with them.

OatcakeCravings · 19/03/2008 16:14

You are being a bit precious. Sky will fit the dish - which is v small by the way - wherever is easiest. If you're not happy with that then get an outside contractor to do it around the back of your house or on your roof which should't cost more than £50.

bozza · 19/03/2008 16:14

Think they have to face in a certain direction. South?

Oh and you don't need Sky to get Cbeebies - freeview is perfectly adequate and if you get one with a HD recorder you can have the functionality of Sky Plus.

arthursmum · 19/03/2008 17:38

Nuts, you saw through my CBeebies ruse, its actually so I can have the guilty pleasures of watching Ross Kemp on Gangs and America's Next Top Model

MorocconOil · 19/03/2008 18:01

The dish they brought wasn't small. We have CBEEBIES already as we have a digibox.

Like you Heifer we're in a conservation area, so may not be allowed one. There are no other ones in our street, although there are some in the next road along.

I think the blokes who came just wanted to put it in the easiest place for them, but from the experiences of others I am glad they didn't start tramping all over the roof.

I'll get DH to ring Sky again, to talk about the options.
