I've never had a credit card.
I'm not rich but I'm not skint.
I have my pension and a private pension.
Plus my savings are a big compensation settlement from something horrific in my past..( hence now being disabled).
My fridge is full ( delivery shop on Thursday).
I wish you all well who are battling money woes and hope things improve for you.

Underthesea65 · 20/01/2024 18:27

Very skint.cant work due to very rare disease and DH is my full time carer. No savings, and relying on benefits. Mortgage is over £20k in arrears. Have enough for loaf and milk until next Thursday. Few bits in freezer, so will have to make do

ManhattanNY · 20/01/2024 18:27

About £1800 in my bank account
No savings
A £10,000 car loan
and around £500 on credit cards.
-£115 with British Gas.
Oh and £165,000 left to pay on the mortgage.

I realise I’m not poor, but boy do I wish I could win £100,000 on the lottery or something.

Basicmaths · 20/01/2024 18:28

1.5k overdrawn and £11 to last until I get paid on Tuesday (which should be fine as we have enough food to last until then). I’m on an average salary yet seem to be worse off than I was on a lower salary years ago.

Moier · 20/01/2024 18:29

P.S.
I do remember when l suddenly became a single parent over night and having no money.
I cut up towels to make nappies for my daughter..
I used an old camping stove to warm a tin of beans on.. ( no gas).. took both my daughters into my bed to keep warm.. pretended l wasn't hungry so l could feed them..
This lasted 5 days until my Mum .. God bless her.. came to my rescue and l was able to claim benefits..

VariantHela · 20/01/2024 18:29

In the skint camp.
About £100 ish until next Friday. No overdraft which is good but have circa £500 CC debt, minimal savings and currently paying off a loan from when I was off on maternity leave.

Hot take but those with thousands in savings are not skint.

januaryislong · 20/01/2024 18:30

Skint. £6k overdraft and another £8k debt that needs to be cleared this year. No savings. Loads of other loans. No excuse as we have a good income. I'm just terrible with money. It's time to change.

GintyMcGinty · 20/01/2024 18:30

I'm not skint but spent many years being very skint and remember hating January as it goes on forever.

I'm also neither a 'boomer' nor in receipt of inheritance @ellie09 (and btw no need for the ageist slur). I'm just further on in my career, as is DH.

5thCommandment · 20/01/2024 18:32

@Zonnet - have a creditcard because it gives you payment protections, and it's 0%, whereas investments gain interest at 5-6%. If I spend savings I lost interest in future.

shivermetimbers77 · 20/01/2024 18:33

I feel selfish for saying this as I don’t wish for anyone to struggle, but crikey it’s reassuring to read this thread and realise I’m not the only one counting the pennies at the moment. Sometimes on mumsnet it seems like everyone has a massive house with no mortgage, a six figure salary and kids at Eton 😅.

Christmasdinosaur · 20/01/2024 18:34

-1,150 in over draft…..
do have 4,000 in savings but trying desperately not to touch… can’t wait for pay day… so many things gone wrong money wise this month - spent lots on necessary work on the car.
We live month to month really.

This. I’ve seriously reflected after this thread on my own worries. Most money threads on here attract the type of people you describe x

Ihatemondays1962 · 20/01/2024 18:36

I've got about £300 left but annoyingly have a big bill of £600 I need to pay this month once I get paid which will wipe out this plus any spare I would have had next month too.

madeinmanc · 20/01/2024 18:36

Went around Lidl today looking for some things in the middle aisle. Grabbed a few things on offer and my groceries then realised I'd spent way too much and had to put half the basket and my lovely pain au chocolat back sheepishly. I'd love that pain au chocolat rn 😔

Greensleevevssnotnose · 20/01/2024 18:37

I was quoted £800 for an essential car repair I needed to have done asap. That would have wiped out my comfort blanket and probably led me to get a new car tbh. It's 10 years old and a bit scrappy. Went to another garage today for MOT and it passed with no advisories. Hmm essential repair! I don't think so.

They’ll appear soon. Guaranteed.

MumTeacherofMany · 20/01/2024 18:38

I have £19 to last me until next Friday...

Babyroobs · 20/01/2024 18:39

Feel like I've done quite well this month and still have £200 left to last until payday on wednesday. However next month will be bad, dd needs £800 ( crazy) for a deposit on next years student house that she doesn't even move into until September, says her student loan won't even cover her rent ( halls ) bill this year and she desperately needs more driving lessons to try to pass her test before she starts having to get to placements. She is desperately looking for a job but it seems to be hard. never spend any money on myself !

freshstartfor2024 · 20/01/2024 18:40

Pretty skint. Have about 550 to last an entire month and some no bills have come out of that yet. Have 300 in my savings, trying not to touch it. Get 300 cost of living payment soon though.

Have a couple of grand in debts to clear also.

Don't have a car, need to find a job now LO has started school but struggling to find anything I can get to. Everyone wants weekend, I'm a single mum.

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 20/01/2024 18:40

Another one who's got-£50 in bank. Not getting paid til 31st of month.

Glitterybee · 20/01/2024 18:40

I earn £50k a year and right now I have

-£5 in my bank
-£20 cash in purse
-£0 savings

The joys of the current COL and being a single parent!

I don’t think I’ve ever been so skint, but I’m not panicking because I’ve got a plan this year to clear my debts and get some savings built up.

EvangelicalAboutButteredToast · 20/01/2024 18:41

I am currently the most skint I’ve been as I’ve taken 10 thousand pound out of my current account to lock it into savings and left myself with a few hundred till the end of the month. I hate it.

UtterlyButterly2048 · 20/01/2024 18:41

Not skint. But having spent many years being properly, £20 to buy food for the month and no money for bills skint, I’ve never forgotten it. I give away more than I spend.

Zonnet · 20/01/2024 18:43

How common, out of interest, do you think it is for people to be totally skint at the end of each month?

blackrabbitwhiterabbit · 20/01/2024 18:43

Barrenfieldoffucks · 20/01/2024 17:36

Skint and not skint. Skint in actual accessible disposable cash, about £400 until payday. But we have a small mortgage, no debt and longer term savings linked to our business, and the business pays our fuel and a few other costs too.

£400 until pay day is not skint IMHO!
