How do I get rid of these little fuckers? 😆not an AIBU but posting for traffic. I have small DC so can’t use anything harmful.

i have been using the dehumidifier to help with condensation as I know they like damp but keep finding them in the washing basket and under dcs bed. I know they are harmless but I want them gone.

please tell me if you have had any luck getting rid of them? What works?

thanks!

They like food too, so hoover.

We had them in a second hand pram we were given. Absolutely crawling with the bastards.
I covered it in cinnamon (apparently it repela them) and left it in the sink to dry (it was summer). Never saw one again thank goodness.

Before that we had the odd one or two in my bathroom but it was because someone cough cough kept using the loo roll and leaving the empty rolls on the floor (which they eat).

PurpleCar02 · 19/01/2024 21:24

They hate lavender, get some drops from Holland & Barrett and dilute with water into a spray. It won’t get rid forever but they will stay away for a while. Sadly the only thing that got rid of them for me permanently was moving house!

Kitkatcatflap · 19/01/2024 21:24

I used to hate them until I read that they date back to prehistoric times and then I admired their pluck. They don't bother me now.

Theunamedcat · 19/01/2024 21:25

Talc apparently smothers them

Mementomorissons · 19/01/2024 21:26

I hate them! Diatomaceous earth is what worked for me. It's just silica powder I think, which removes the moisture silverfish love

Lwrenagain · 19/01/2024 21:45

I fucking love mine, dp goes fucking apeshit about them, he caught me giving them quaver dust and read the the riot act.
I told him that if I couldn't keep the silverfish I'd get a Shetland pony.

I won purely because we'd 100% be paying to feed a wee horsey had I not been allowed to keep my bathroom buddies as I call them.

I just find their little quick run very endearing 😂

Banquet · 19/01/2024 21:50

The talc is interesting, I’m going to try that!

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 19/01/2024 21:55

I don't know what these are and I don't want to know 😩

Teeny wee insects that have the speed of a rocket.

Chitasaurus · 19/01/2024 21:58

I like them. They are unique in that they have an enzyme that allows them to digest chlorophyll.

Rainbowx · 19/01/2024 21:59

I used sticky pads from eBay, but I don't really get them anymore, thankfully. Placed in each corner of bathroom/kitchen area

AllTheChaos · 19/01/2024 21:59

Their weird head spike things freak me out! I’ve tried all sorts, and finally the lavender oil on the floor cleaner seems to have done the trick.

of course, a month later the bastard mouse family moved into my kitchen!

rickyrickygrimes · 19/01/2024 22:02

😂@Lwrenagain we only have two teeny ones and they live in the toilet room. I only see them when I go for a nighttime pee, and yes they are bathroom buddies. They don’t do any harm and you know, biodiversity and all.

INeedAnotherName · 19/01/2024 22:02

Keep up with the dehumidifier, ventilation and heat. It will work eventually.

Are you putting damp towels in the wash basket? That would make it a lovely dark and damp home. Use the washer as the basket and do washes more often as a temporary measure.

Someone needs to clean under that bed every couple of days. Call the riot act, nothing goes under it, hoover regularly. Unless you are using it as storage rather than empty food plates/rubbish. In which case air it out regularly.

You have to keep on top of the damp/food for a few months then you suddenly realise you've not seen one for a while.

Amazing. They are kinda cute...but they eat carpets.

I second sticky pads. We have had a few in our bathroom for years, then one day a few months ago we saw loads in the kitchen. It was late at night and dark. We put a sticky pad down and caught loads over a few days and now we never see them.

Caswallonthefox · 19/01/2024 22:42

What I find bizarre is, we had silver fish in our bungalow, when I was growing up. Gas central heating, double glazing, no damp and yet, there they were.
I now live in a grade 2 listed flat that has no double glazing and central heating that is as much use as a chocolate fire guard and the damp is not fun, yet no silver fish.
I have more problems with spiders.

Kentlane · 19/01/2024 22:51

We got a lavender carpet spray designed to deter them.

DogualCat · 19/01/2024 22:52

Get a cat, we get the odd few now and again in the bathroom as it doesn’t have a window. The cat has great fun hunting them!

CustardySergeant · 19/01/2024 22:56

Get this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Karlsten-Silverfish-Effective-Quality-staining/dp/B089MYTPPN?ref=ast_sto_dp
and always remember to respray round the edges of the room whenever you have washed the floor. It really works.
You don't get loads of dead silverfish, you just never see them again.

Crazycrazylady · 19/01/2024 22:59

I got a pet friendly spray online causes protector c which I sprayed under all the skirting boards. The first morning I had loadsssss of bodies, the second a few more. I go over it once a month just to make sure the bastards stay gone but so far so good!!
