School demanding packed meals for 18 hr bus trip

Snoopmummy · 19/01/2024 17:09

DC is off on a school trip involving an 18 hour coach journey. School is demanding we drop children off in the evening having fed them (fine), equipped with nut free snacks (makes sense). We have also been asked to provide TWO meals: a packed breakfast and a packed lunch.

That means breakfast will be consumed 13 hours after they set off and lunch will be something like 17 hours later. Is there any food that can safely last for that length of time in an insulated bag or flask? DC does not like dried fruit or cereal bars.

AIBU to consider asking for the risk assessment over this and suggesting we equip them with money to get food on the way as they will need to stop anyway?!

Hikers take their own risk, but if a child had food poisoning from the instructions of the school who are supposed to abide by strict health and safety rules to protect children, I'm sure there could be a lawsuit.

If I was a teacher I’d be giving up the day job reading this.

What kind of a school trip would involve an 18 hour coach trip anyway?

Ski trips to the Alps usually.

‘bartered for goods/services one they arrive at the destination.’

Are they travelling to a bunker for the end of the world?

As if the poor mum hasn’t got enough to worry about what with the cheese police and impending malnutrition.

Seriously, I somehow survived many school trips with two pieces of hovis and marg - a hard boiled egg, wrapped in the hovis wrapper, plus a banana.

😂😂This is turning into Mad Max. Give him a pack of cigarettes, that will be valuable.

I did long coach school trips as a child but literally can't remember a single thing I ate, only the gossip/dramas and fun we had.

Mywhoopdeedoo · 21/01/2024 14:17

I missed the bartering bit ! Cigs and booze - very handy if Armageddon happens when you’re in a coach on the M1

What's the risk assessment for a tube of Pringles?

I've got a can here it's Best By Feb 25.

A year. Might be OK then.

Oh dear, it's cheese. Best be careful.

I do hope that someone from the OP's son's school recognises her from her bat-shittery and puts this thread up on the notice board, the Spring term usually needs some light entertainment.

Have you ever had a paper cut? Foil from the top of those tubes is worse!

That particular poster wants nutritional (coz school should always ensure that a healthy and nutritious meal can be provided)!

She also wants no risk ...... because "lawsuit"

So you fail on both scores!

Where are the SS involvement that's needed?

What kind of a school trip would involve an 18 hour coach trip anyway?

Trips to destinations that are a long way away, obviously.

NewName24 · 21/01/2024 14:35

Ah, just beat me to it @JudgeJ I too was going to guess trips to places that are 18 hours away Grin

Some people must live in such small bubbles.

Pherian · 21/01/2024 15:54

What would you take with you if you had to be on a bus for that long ?

I have already bought crisps, chocolate, biscuits and breakfast bars. Will also take some fresh fruit. 🍇
It will last til the ferry at least!🤣

PollyPut · 21/01/2024 17:54

You are making a mountain out of a molehill.

Don't rely on the children being able to buy food at a service station - do you remember the coaches getting stuck in Kent on their way to France last March? Hundreds of hungry school children on those coaches and not enough food sent. What happens if they stop at a service station and the only sandwiches they've got left are ones your child doesn't like?

Fresh pesto is usually nut-free; pesto pasta with some veg in will do well. Probably easiest to send it cold.

Equally you can buy small cold packs to put in insulated bags if you want to keep sandwiches cold.

I would avoid yogurt though.

Sennelier1 · 21/01/2024 17:56

It sounds as if your child is used to 3 cours lunches served by a butler 🥹 just pack sandwiches, an apple and a banana, a packet of crisps and a few frozen juice boxes to keep the lot fresh 🤷🏼‍♀️

Mywhoopdeedoo · 21/01/2024 18:19

This thread is mn batshittery at its finest

dapsnotplimsolls · 21/01/2024 18:23

Needs to go in Classics for sure.

Newchapterbeckons · 21/01/2024 19:04

AVOID salami apart from the fact it’s likely to give your child cancer it festers in the heat. Obviously ditto egg mayo and Tuna mayo or anything fishy.

I would strongly recommend some lined super strength shopping bags too, Waitrose have the most hardy variety.

There is at least a handful of children that get coach/sea sick. Recycled egg mayo splattered everywhere is never a pretty sight or experience.

One poor child notably chundered from middle England to the alps pretty much non stop, so you might wish to take a mask with Vicks for your son to make it bearable and some hydration tablets should it be your poor child or to share out ( saves a drs visit) . Extra loo roll and dettol wipes and spray obviously.

Spicybeanburger · 21/01/2024 20:43

I'm sure one packed lunch of salami won't give op's kid cancer! Ffs. The hyperbole here is wild.

Fresh pesto is made with pine nuts!

Pine 'nuts' aren't nuts. They're seeds.

Having said that, some pesto has added cashews or walnuts, so it still needs checking.

MikeRafone · 22/01/2024 05:37

Peanuts aren’t “ nuts” they are legumes

but peanuts and peanut butter is often a cause of intense allergic reaction

Fresh pesto is made with pine nuts!

Not if you make it nut free. FYI you can also make it dairy free.

It's not pesto, then, it's a basil dressing with too much basil.
