To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?

I've just seen a headline about him now being the front runner for the Republican nomination. Which I assume means it's entirely a possibility that he could then win.

I'm British (English) so I know our current government is a complete embarrassment. But I will never get my head around DT having been president once never mind possibly twice.

How could this happen??

HoarHouse, with you using the Trump term ‘Sleepy Joe’ etc, I assume your leanings are more in Trump’s direction. Do you think Trump would leave office peacefully at the end of his term? If so, why would you think that given his actions to date?

I think we should wait and see how many women turn out to vote on behalf of their rights. The Republicans got spanked in the midterms.

Depends what women’s rights you’re talking anger. Abortion is but one. What about every sex-based right that Biden has legislated out of existence? On day one - by executive order (so democratic) - Biden wiped away women’s rights with the stroke of a pen.

No women-only prisons, women-only refuges, women-only changing rooms or toilets, women-only awards/ opportunity, women-only sport. Unless a governor fights very hard for it and is prepared to lose federal funding

It’s depressing to see so many women so clueless about American politics with an ‘orange man bad’ level of critical thinking.

Biden is a deeply venal old man and career politician. His family are all multi-millionaires, as is he. No clear explanation as to how. He was chosen to be the presidential candidate simply to be the ‘grandpa Joe’ hokey front for the extreme left.

And as for the person who suggested the utterly brainless AOC as presidential material. No words.

WeeJimmycranky · 16/01/2024 11:36

extreme left

😂

WeeJimmycranky · 16/01/2024 11:38

I keep seeing this ridiculous extreme left trope all over the place - it’s ridiculous both in the US and UK contexts - in both nations the Overton window has shifted waaaaay to the right in the last 30 years

SanctuaryCity · 16/01/2024 08:58

The whole thing is a mess. Both parties have deeply unsuitable candidates. Biden looks like a pensioner with dementia shuffling round a nursing home and Trump is like that racist, sexist, nasty old uncle at a wedding who everyone tolerates acting like a selfish boorish asshole. Why didn’t the democrats stand up to Biden and chose a different, younger candidate?

I don't know but maybe something to do with his money and influence. It would certainly make the contest easier to follow if they had chosen someone else.

My SiL lives in the US although she's British and has pretty much the same idea of Trump as many of us over here. She's amazed at how many people she knows would vote for them when she's previously seen them as sane, rational people.

It’s a shock when that happens. I used to work with someone Ithought was sane and rational until she happened to mention she thought Prince Philip was involved in Diana’s death.

Lastarse · 16/01/2024 11:41

I was reading about the fact that a lot of Trump’s fan base are largely uneducated, it could explain the blind confidence in him and inability to see a guy with 92 criminal charges pending who is also a complete dick should be a leader.

horseyhorsey17 · 16/01/2024 11:46

Biden should have stood down. He's actually done pretty well in turning the economy around but even so, it's not that surprising that the American public doesn't want an 85 year old as President, let alone one that has been rumoured to be losing his marbles (most likely Republican bullshit but mud sticks). The Democrats would win with a younger candidate and I honestly don't understand why they haven't done this and are pretty much letting Trump walk off with the election and wreck American democracy forever.

Yeah. The 'extreme left' trope says everything you need to know about the intellect of the person using it.

Verbena17 · 16/01/2024 11:54

@tinkertee Many people think Trump is the current CIC (commander in chief) of the military. Everything says he is 😉.

If you still think Biden has been running the shit show for the past 3 years, you’re still listening to mainstream media. What’s been happening in the background is amazing!
Use your own discernment.

Remember the time when the USA had 2 sitting presidents - think along those lines.

This election map below is what some people around the world saw before the 2020 election was rigged….

To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?
keylemon · 16/01/2024 11:55

Imagine only because they talk about open borders indiscriminately they should not be called extreme left. Where did I read that Tories are extreme right?

therealcookiemonster · 16/01/2024 11:56

as long it's Biden v trump, its not even a question. trump will win

Democrats are doing a great ostrich impression by ignoring the calamity that's coming their way

WinterDeWinter · 16/01/2024 11:56

It's almost a certainty unless Biden listens to Bernie Sanders and aims his campaign entirely at the working class - housing, CoL, jobs, education.

I can't believe he's standing again. His personal ratings are in the gutter - he will lose - but a recent poll found that if he werent the candidate enough ppl would vote Dem to swing it for them. Trump is responsible for Trump, ofc, and that poll didn't name a specific alternative candidate - but that's unforgivable on Biden's part IMO.

Fundamentally, people are selfish. Not just Americans. All of us. Our personal interests concern us more than the interests of our wider community. People like trump appeal because of that. Your problems are the fault of X group. I'll help you. Why should your money be spent on Y group? I'll help you. Look at this group of people, they're the enemy. I'll help you. If this policy goes ahead other people will benefit! You may or may not benefit but you won't benefit more than other people. I'll help you.

Trump is one man. He can't do anything by himself. Selfishness and short sightedness are (ultimately) fatal flaws in our species that gives men like him power. They're also what will likely be our end.

I agree. Same reason people vote Tory. Not for the greater good, for themselves.

Westernesse · 16/01/2024 11:56

I have zero time for Trump but he’s probably the least bad option, especially if he has a normie running mate. There were no new wars on his watch and the global economy improved.

duc748 · 16/01/2024 11:57

Many Americans must find themselves in same situation as a lot of Brits: politically homeless, and unable to vote for either of the main parties. Trump is a crook and a grifter, and the Democrats (and surely it wouldn't change even if Biden was replaced by someone else?) seem intent on trampling on women's rights. As for Ukraine, I reckon its allies can't wait to find a justification to walk away, applies to the UK as much as the US, the EU too. We've seen plenty of opinion pieces lately preparing the Western public for this.

LakieLady · 16/01/2024 11:59

Thewateriswide · 16/01/2024 09:24

I hate to wake MN up to this fact but Americans did better economically under Trump than Biden and Trump did not start any wars. He also tried to close the border and control illegal immigration from the Southern border. Since Biden its been completely uncontrolled and cities, including NYC and Chicago, are swamped by new arrivals with nowhere to go.

I am not a Trump supporter, just trying to explain why he still has support.

He made America something of a laughing stock though. And weren't all western economies generally doing better at the time?

I'm so old that I can remember Macmillan resigning and Alec Douglas Home becoming PM, and every PM since. I don't think any of them have been as woefully dim and/or deranged as Trump. I really struggle to get my head round the fact that so many people in the US support him. He makes our Farage and Fox seem rational and normal by comparison.

I mean...the debate sort of ends here. This post sums it up very well.

Biden plays on being part of Obamas legacy which is how he keeps being their best option and how he has gotten away with being so shockingly crap.

But I do think the Republicans might get in - you have entire schools in NYC shut to house migrants and children having to learn remotely...and we all know how well that goes! Migration will be the hot topic for the US this election.

Either way, it's going to be bad news for their domestic and foreign policy.

cardibach · 16/01/2024 12:04

IncompleteSenten · 16/01/2024 09:53

Yup. It's been done 27 times. He will certainly try to make it 28.

Try does not mean succeed. I think he will try. I hope he will not succeed.

I hope he won’t get a chance, but many Americans seem blind to his immorality, criminality and downright unpleasantness. Not to mention incompetence.

HRTQueen · 16/01/2024 12:04

Unfortunately I think he will

why the Democrats have not found a suitable replacement for Biden I just can’t understand he is consistently low in the approval ratings, he looks so tired and often weak, he too often gets confused and he has a really gruelling schedule ahead of him. Trump can make all the mistakes he likes it’s expected of him and to his supporters it simply doesn’t matter but he looks ready for the challenge.

Its those sway voters and I am not sure Biden will get enough of their support to stop Trump what a ridiculous mistake the Democrats have made

Bargello · 16/01/2024 12:06

It's really sad that out of a nation of 300 million, the two "best" people they can come up with are Biden and Trump.

Fullfatandfortyplus · 16/01/2024 09:59

I see this said a lot and I’ve just had a Google but I can’t find anything he’s done that’s racist. Do you have any examples?

Have a read of this. To be honest, I’m surprised anyone needs to read it - it’s very obvious. https://www.vox.com/2016/7/25/12270880/donald-trump-racist-racism-history

President Donald Trump at a press conference.

Donald Trump’s long history of racism, from the 1970s to 2020

Trump has repeatedly claimed he’s "the least racist person." His history suggests otherwise.

SpidersAreShitheads · 16/01/2024 12:07

No matter what your political leaning is, surely no one can think that Trump's conduct has been even close to acceptable?

I can't quite get my head around the fact that a president can encourage an insurgency, commit fraud, be charged with sexual assault, undermine the whole democratic system by falsely claiming his losses were rigged....and still it's OK for him to run again.

There's something so very wrong. There have been times when I've held my nose and voted for someone - but I don't think there's a single part of my being that could find it in me to ever vote for this man.

I also agree that the Democrats are at fault here - Joe Biden was a principled and active politician for many years, but someone should have stopped him running again. He's wiped out any slim chance at all of the Democrats beating Trump. He's way past it.

I fear what Trump will do when he inevitably wins the election. He'll forgive the crimes of him and his family members, and continue to rig the courts so he's never indicted again.

I can't believe that there's this level of corruption, openly visible, and no one seems able to stop it.

I think Boris took courage from Trump's behaviour but didn't go nearly as far. Trump really thinks he's untouchable - and he seems to be....

Cortez? She of the - the 'government can't run out of money, they just need to print more'?🙄

@SOBplus - if that’s a reference to the tweet she supposedly wrote, the tweet was actually from a parody Twitter account impersonating her and not from her own account - https://www.reuters.com/article/idUSL1N37S1TE/

Naddd · 16/01/2024 12:08

You know what I don't get is america voting in these doddery old men.
