To ask if Donald Trump could actually be president again?

tinkertee · 16/01/2024 08:37

I've just seen a headline about him now being the front runner for the Republican nomination. Which I assume means it's entirely a possibility that he could then win.

I'm British (English) so I know our current government is a complete embarrassment. But I will never get my head around DT having been president once never mind possibly twice.

How could this happen??

How come Trump is still not in jail? It is almost four years since he had not been the president. With criminal charges like that. How odd?

keylemon · 16/01/2024 17:29

Well hopeful you will always operate on the presumption of innocence but it is taken such a long time.

MrsMariaReynolds · 16/01/2024 17:37

He absolutely will. Sad, but true. Do not underestimate the stupidity of the American people (and I can say that because I am one)

WeeJimmycranky · 16/01/2024 17:39

And of course if he was poor and black he'd be treated exactly the same 😂

topnoddy · 16/01/2024 17:44

It's the good old US of A innit

Of course Trump could get back in the Shitehouse , the idiots who vote for him Fumb Ducks . The whole presidential thing is all about how much money you can throw at it to con people to vote for you or your party , chuck in a good dollop of Jesus and the Bible and away you go

Because he's got a lot money basically

@Golden407 the Wikipedia page on his racial views absolutely lists examples that happened during his campaign and his presidency.

I've checked the Wikipedia page. The examples seem to be questioning Obamas country of birth and referring to Haiti and some African countries as "Shitholes".
Again how exactly is that racist?

cardibach · 16/01/2024 17:55

Trump is awful but he's coherent
You what now @justasking111 ?
He mostly makes no sense. And they tried him with one of those word memory things if you remember…

Hey, come on, play fair: he was able to remember four whole words for more than five minutes, and (probably, but we have no actual evidence about that) in the right order.

Oh, no, wait a moment: he repeatedly mentioned five words, but we had no evidence they were the ones in the test. Since they were something like "person, woman, man, camera, TV" in the interview he gave, they may not have been the ones that were in the dementia test: those seem a lot as if they were preoccupations of his rather than random nouns.

EasternEcho · 16/01/2024 18:06

@Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g
"He's racist, sexist, cruel, selfish, manipulative, lies as easily as breathing and not very bright."
Those are exactly the traits that appeal to those who support him, which is a sizeable part of the population. Which in itself is scary.

Figmentofmyimagination · 16/01/2024 18:08

What I don’t get is why the only likely Democrat option is still Biden - a tired ‘has been’ in his 80s. Surely the democrats realise the importance of fronting a viable candidate, given the threat to world peace represented by Trump. Despair.

What i didn't get was why didn't anyone try and "take him out" when he was president ?

Barleycat · 16/01/2024 18:14

Yes unfortunately because a lot of Americans are kept deliberately under educated and ill informed and have no awareness of the rest of the world. Its not their fault but a society that worships money the way it does is bound to lead to selfishness and only caring about oneself. If Trump gets in again i look forward to the disintegration of the US when finally they realise that they are no longer the leaders of the free world. Only worry about what damage trump will do on the way

Teddleshon · 16/01/2024 18:16

@Barleycat but Trump is adamant that the US shouldn’t be the world’s policeman, it’s one of his key policies.

I should have put that bit in inverted commas. The world in general would be a much safer place were the US to butt out of anything that doesn't suit them. That's a whole other issue however.

Fox111 · 16/01/2024 18:22

It's just amazing how popular Trump is in America. We have been to states during summer 2019 and walking around my husband bought Trump election cap (Make America Great Again). He was wearing it one day, the people reaction was just overwhelming. They would give thumbs up, stop and talk and shout Trump. I felt that I was walking with a celebrity. I think it's hard to understand from outside.

keylemon · 16/01/2024 18:26

Well the other people accused for instance of undermining democracy in Capitol are all in jail and got arrested pretty soon afterwards. I basically do not understand how come he is not or is taking so long. Same with the millionaires and billionaires accused of rape and sexual assault all seem to have been given their sentences quicker. Financial fraud likes too. I rather someone else and not a criminal is on the run for president.

LookAtThatCritter · 16/01/2024 18:29

As a Brit living in America, I can honestly say that with the choice between Trump and Biden, then I have to pick Trump. I think it's digusting that we have either of those choices honestly. Many great points about the country and living in it, but the politics are a total shitshow.

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/01/2024 18:37

Speaking of coherent:

"Look, having nuclear — my uncle was a great professor and scientist and engineer, Dr. John Trump at MIT; good genes, very good genes, OK, very smart, the Wharton School of Finance, very good, very smart — you know, if you’re a conservative Republican, if I were a liberal, if, like, OK, if I ran as a liberal Democrat, they would say I'm one of the smartest people anywhere in the world — it’s true! — but when you're a conservative Republican they try — oh, do they do a number — that’s why I always start off: Went to Wharton, was a good student, went there, went there, did this, built a fortune — you know I have to give my like credentials all the time, because we’re a little disadvantaged — but you look at the nuclear deal, the thing that really bothers me — it would have been so easy, and it’s not as important as these lives are — nuclear is so powerful; my uncle explained that to me many, many years ago, the power and that was 35 years ago; he would explain the power of what's going to happen and he was right, who would have thought? — but when you look at what's going on with the four prisoners — now it used to be three, now it’s four — but when it was three and even now, I would have said it's all in the messenger; fellas, and it is fellas because, you know, they don't, they haven’t figured that the women are smarter right now than the men, so, you know, it’s gonna take them about another 150 years — but the Persians are great negotiators, the Iranians are great negotiators, so, and they, they just killed, they just killed us, this is horrible."

What do we think that was about? It was in a campaign speech he gave in August 2016, and it is verbatim. (And bear in mind that when he made that speech, most people did actually know "nuclear" was "powerful" and had done since the year Trump was born: there was this incident at Hiroshima, and another at Nagasaki. So "who would have thought" is purest nonsense.)

I’d be interested to know how Biden is racist. I don’t think he’s a particularly effective president as his ability to govern - and to represent his government well - seems to have been negatively affected by him ageing quickly since he became president, which also seems to have affected his stamina and energy levels. I don’t agree that he’s racist though. Do you have any examples of when he has been racist?

There was the whole bit about telling black voters that if they didn't vote for him, they weren't "really black".

I think a lot of people posting here are really naive or uninformed about what is going on in the US. I am no fan of Trump, I think he is far too lacking in several important areas, but the US is a shit show and many of the policies that the Democrats seem to be in favour of are seen as part and parcel of that.

The immigration stuff is huge, and while people in the UK seem unaware, Biden is now trying to ....build a border wall to help control it.

Democrat cities are in big trouble - some declared themselves "sanctuary cities" and were then very perturbed when some of the border states started bussing border crossing migrants to those places. Cities along the border are completely overwhelmed and running out of money. Democrat run cities in the north are war zones having crippled their police.

People are also increasingly disgusted with the "culture war" stuff, things like women's sports being invaded by biological males, the disadvantaging of Asian students at universities, school boards with political agendas. Many see the left as deliberately stoking racial divisions too. Middle of the road people are being affected by these things directly.

As for abortion - it is very naive of people in the UK to see this as a clear winner for the Democrats because they imagine it means lots of women will come out and vote for Biden. Americans are very divided on it, and female voters are slightly less likely to be pro-choice than male voters. If anything it shows that the Democrats either failed to do what was necessary to pass a new law, in order to keep it as a wedge voting issue, or they failed to realize that Roe vs Wade was never a strong federal legal decision and depended on a partisan court weighted in their favour, and they should have tried to establish the laws they wanted at the state level all of these years. It makes them look a little shit, and Trump like he took real action instead of playing politics like the Republicans have been for years as well.

keylemon · 16/01/2024 18:50

@Barleycat Americans are free to do and have whenever way of life they want. Capitalists or materialist or religious is none of your business. It is a bitch for some that they are not as dependable on the state for everything. They are not trying to change Europe’s socialism just because it is not a way of life they have in America. Also, with internet we are all aware what is happening in the world so people are hardly kept in the dark. However, the most impressive universities aside from Oxbridge are in the U.S so maybe your perception about people being undereducated needs revision. America is very big with many states and there is nothing more ridiculous than putting everyone in the same hole. May be just check the last two centuries achievements in science and technology and medicine. Or even the numbers of people wanting to study and move there from Europe.

Yes re pp and not wanting to be police, and another pp linked charts to waning support for Ukraine funding

Then views on NATO

The trouble is this is unlikely to be as difficult for the US as it is for Europe

Plus @keylemon makes some good points

AskingQuestionsAllTheTime · 16/01/2024 19:02

The weird thing being that for all his bold claims, Trump in fact did nothing in particular to overturn Roe vs Wade except giving Mitch McConnell (whom Trump did not choose) an opportunity to break his own rules about appointing justices to the Supreme Court just before an election. Trump nominated who he was told to nominate, and Dobbs v. Jackson was up to other people who brought things to court: Trump himself didn't raise a finger, and it didn't even happen when he was President.

It does seem to have contributed to the electoral failure of the Republicans in the mid-terms.

74 Million voted for Trump in 2020… it puts me off going to the States on holiday!
