AIBU to ask when tonsillectomy pain will improve??

Sorry I'm shamelessly posting in here as I'm kind of desperate!!

My 4 year old DD had her tonsils and adenoids out on 6th Jan. we are now day 9 and I can see no end in sight for the awful nights we've been having and how much pain she is in. We have been doing round the clock ibuprofen and calpol every 3 hours since the moment she came round from surgery and most nights she ends up needing a dose of morphine to get her to settle. And then it's every 2-3 hours up in absolute floods of tears and inconsolable. It definitely did get worse around day 5 or 6 when the scabs started sloughing off and now looks very patchy where the white is coming away but she is still in so much pain, one side in particular where she is having bad ear ache as well. Everything I've read seems to suggest an improvement around day 10 but we are firmly in the trenches at the moment and I just can't imagine it happening!

Please can I ask anyone with experience, how long did it take for the pain to abate a little so she can sleep peacefully at least.

Just quick update - we did go to the docs and he checked her throat - all looks to be healing well. But they have a low threshold for antibiotics in these cases so have prescribed some. They said day 10-14 can be the peak of pain and should soon start to improve. Just wanted to post in case someone else searches for this in the future. It seems there are lots of variables in terms of recovery time/pain etc for each individual based on these replies. Thanks for your thoughts all x

Hi @lollydu
My 3yo had a tonsillectomy on the 20 august
He is still in so much pain and on antibiotics and pain medicine since day 1
Have been to the doctor and all seem well
Just wondering when did it get better for your child?
What happened from day 10 to 14? All well?
I am starting to lose my mind and just heart broken for him being in so much pain...

I had them done as an adult so don't think it's the same but it took me almost 3 weeks. Worst part was week 2 from memory. Never eaten so much ice cream yet lost so much weight!

@Morais hang in there, we thought it was never going to end and then on around day 11 she turned a corner very abruptly and everything was fine after that. It happened really quick she went from being awful in agony to back to normal. Best wishes and fingers crossed for you.xx

From what I heard , having this done as an adult is 10 times worse. So glad that those days are over for you and is just a memory. All the best

For those going through it with kids just bear in mind it must be hard but I suffered from decades of terrible colds, illnesses and of course tonsilitis. When they took mine out they said they were incredibly scarred and likely should have come out when I was 3. I've been so much better since!!

I hate the idea of my son having a tonsillectomy too but he seems to be affected in the same way so we'll see 🥲

I hear you.
My son was ill almost every 2 weeks and he is only 3. Sleep apnea and snoring.
While I wait for his next medication I cant even hear him ! Just sleeping calmly ..
I agree , the differences post surgery are huge.
Hopefully your son doesnt have to go through this. And if he needs to, sending good energy for a quick recovery :)
