To ask to be temporarily rehoused whilst new kitchen installed?

I will preface this by saying I KNOW I’m very lucky to have a HA house, and I KNOW I’m very lucky to be getting a brand new kitchen for free.

So as above, I have work commencing on 22nd January to rip out the old kitchen and replace it. I don’t have a choice in this, according to the documents, I am unable to say no it’s fine, I’ll keep the old one. I’ve been told the works will take 2 weeks, as it also involves taking up the tiled floor and replacing it with lino.

It’s just dawning on me what a nightmare this will be. I have to completely empty the kitchen obviously, but there’s not really anywhere to put the stuff, it’s a very small house (just living room leading to kitchen/diner downstairs). The big appliances will go outside in the back yard apparently, but everything else will have to be boxed up and kept somewhere. I’ll have no cooking or washing up facilities, and no way of washing or drying clothes.

That’s all pretty standard I know, but my main concern is that I have a disability (CFS) and also both DC are diagnosed with ASD and currently in the house all the time as neither in education. We will essentially be trapped in our bedrooms for 2 weeks as we won’t be able to move in the front room as realistically that’s the only place everything from the kitchen can go. I need to rest…a lot, and the works will be noisy, which will also affect both DC as they struggle badly with loud noises and not being in a calm environment. They’ll also struggle with a team of workmen being in their space for 2 weeks, They both have completely different food aversions and neither of their limited range of foods is conducive to being able to batch cook and set the microwave up somewhere. Realistically it will mean a lot of eating out, but that’s not really affordable for 2 weeks.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and WIBU to ask the HA if there’s anything that could be done to move us while the works are going on? The only family member I could stay with is my DM but she’s a long way away and having works done on her own house which means she doesn’t have a functioning bathroom, so that’s not ideal really.

Completely not ideal due to your situation however after the 2 weeks it should be perfect. Can you use paper plates/bowls. Air frier. Convenience foods for the two weeks? We recently had our entire downstairs remodelled (our choice) we lived in disarray for 10 months, using the outdoor sink to wash up and the bbq to cook for 8 weeks. It was a challenge, a massive challenge but needs must. I hope you muddle through the next two weeks and your new kitchen it superb :)

a. its not free
b. if it was it will be the people with the kind of mentality who think that free always = good!!!!!!

She doesn’t want it, she’s got no choice which means she’s not paying for it the council/housing association/landlord is. All I’m saying is anyone that owns their own home would probably live a new FREE kitchen.

JenniferBooth · 16/01/2024 20:16

i know she doesnt want it IM THE ONE WHO HAS BEEN USING CAPITALS stating that for the hard of thinking

They do put your rent up when they do home improvements you know, they're NOT just gifting her a new kitchen.

You are being VERY unreasonable! Why do so many people in social housing think they are entitled! What if you owned your own house and it needed a new kitchen? You’d have to just get on with it!
When we had a new kitchen fitted we had a microwave in the living room. We also had 3 young children.
If a microwave doesn’t suffice then you can buy small portable stoves! Being in social housing doesn’t entitle you everything!!!

Would you like it if someone came into your house without permission, disrupted your life for 2 weeks, put in the kitchen of THEIR choice then charged you for it? Because that's what is happening to OP.

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 20:22

just say you like living in a shit hole! i don't want to live in a shit hole is that so hard for you to understand? i don't care if it's not my house i can keep this house as long or as little as i want it's not a rented property where i can lose my tenancy after 6 months and why are you even concerned what i do with MY money? i find it odd

SENwoes · 16/01/2024 20:32

Anyone else feel like they’re going around in circles here? 😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫😵‍💫

Re the dog, no I don’t walk her, that was already answered pages ago. I think I have managed it twice since September. It’s either DD2 or my friend who is a dog walker.

Why on earth do you have a dog if you are reliant on other people to walk him/her for you?! Bet its a staffy…

Needmorelego · 16/01/2024 20:33

Stay strong @SENwoes and ignore the ignorant ones on here 🙂💐

I'm sorry your thread has gone so badly. There are a few good suggestions in among the shite.

I hope you can take the good and ignore the bad, one would have to have quite the thick skin to ignore the ableism directed at them though.

Disabled people are allowed dogs.

It's interesting though, many able bodied people also have their teens walking the dog, yet nobody says anything to them other than
'Well done, it's good for them to have some responsibility' Hmm

SENwoes · 16/01/2024 20:39

@mrsclaus1984 no completely wrong there. It’s an XL bully. I just got it because I thought it makes me look cool and you know, cos I live in a HA house.

Or…maybe none of that is true and I wasn’t so unwell when I got it? And also DD2 is perfectly capable of walking her?

@JenniferBooth wow you’re very excitable aren’t you!!!
Whether she wants it or not…. It’s happening so she needs to deal with it the best she can the same as most people do!!!

threatmatrix · 16/01/2024 20:46

But it’s not ‘her house’ is it. And whoever owns it has the right to keep it nice. You want the priviledge of doing what you like then buy your own place.

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 20:48

says the one who just commented something totally pointless 😂

i already have money saved for my house in france and the rent here is a lot less than half what i'd be spending on a mortgage allowing me to save more so in a few years i wouldn't of made that much on a house anyways so it wouldn't benefit me

You could have saved a lot more if you hadn't spent £35,000 on a house that didn't belong to you....
