To ask to be temporarily rehoused whilst new kitchen installed?

I will preface this by saying I KNOW I’m very lucky to have a HA house, and I KNOW I’m very lucky to be getting a brand new kitchen for free.

So as above, I have work commencing on 22nd January to rip out the old kitchen and replace it. I don’t have a choice in this, according to the documents, I am unable to say no it’s fine, I’ll keep the old one. I’ve been told the works will take 2 weeks, as it also involves taking up the tiled floor and replacing it with lino.

It’s just dawning on me what a nightmare this will be. I have to completely empty the kitchen obviously, but there’s not really anywhere to put the stuff, it’s a very small house (just living room leading to kitchen/diner downstairs). The big appliances will go outside in the back yard apparently, but everything else will have to be boxed up and kept somewhere. I’ll have no cooking or washing up facilities, and no way of washing or drying clothes.

That’s all pretty standard I know, but my main concern is that I have a disability (CFS) and also both DC are diagnosed with ASD and currently in the house all the time as neither in education. We will essentially be trapped in our bedrooms for 2 weeks as we won’t be able to move in the front room as realistically that’s the only place everything from the kitchen can go. I need to rest…a lot, and the works will be noisy, which will also affect both DC as they struggle badly with loud noises and not being in a calm environment. They’ll also struggle with a team of workmen being in their space for 2 weeks, They both have completely different food aversions and neither of their limited range of foods is conducive to being able to batch cook and set the microwave up somewhere. Realistically it will mean a lot of eating out, but that’s not really affordable for 2 weeks.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and WIBU to ask the HA if there’s anything that could be done to move us while the works are going on? The only family member I could stay with is my DM but she’s a long way away and having works done on her own house which means she doesn’t have a functioning bathroom, so that’s not ideal really.

@Livelovebehappy the OP has chronic fatigue syndrome so long walks with the dog probably don't happen.

MumtoAvaQuaverx · 16/01/2024 19:37

@Nnsphynx22 If you were able to spend 40k on your kitchen and garden, why did you not use that towards a deposit to buy your own home? You wouldn't have to slum it amongst the poor then seeing as your better than everyone else 🤣🤣🤣

From another thread

Northernsouloldies · 18/08/2022 19:50

A council kitchen is not like a carefully perused one in a showroom. Op be present when work is getting done, contractors don't give a fuck in a council house, I caught one leaning matierals up against the TV screen and unit, fucking imbecile.

Funny thing is, if you bought and sold when ready you would make money rather than throwing it away on rent and improving someone else's house.

I'm still torn between lies or stupidity on this one.

You say you have a dog. Presumably you take the dog for daily walks? If your dcs don’t attend school, just all get wrapped up and take the dog and all go out for a nice long walk stopping in at a local cafe for something cheap and cheerful to eat. Most cafes are dog friendly. Gets you out for an hour or so each day at least.

A nice long walk....with chronic fatigue syndrome?

This thread needs to stop. Awful comments without empathy or any understanding of disability.

This is how CFS works....

You have a tiny amount of energy to get through the day. You can't operate like everyone else who is well.

Energy is used by normal activities like brushing teeth, having a shower, stairs, eating....

It is also used by coping with stress and emotional distress.

It is neurological. Physical symptoms include headaches, noise sensitivity, temperature regulation difficulties, nerve pain, muscle weakness, digestive issues, joint pain, sore throat.....and more.

You can't 'push through ' because over exerting can result in being bedridden and unable to do anything at all.

If it deteriorates, people can end up severe. This means lying in a dark room, blocking out light and noise and just existing. If you are mild or moderate, you have to be careful not to over exert to make yourself worse. A crash after over exerting is called post exertionsl malaise.

Oh and nobody in the NHS offers any support. Most trusts don't have a specialist service.

And nobody understands it and think it being a bit tired.

This isn't just aimed at the poster I quoted but in general. Some really nasty stuff on this thread.

Why would anyone lie to make themself look this financially inept?

Why would anyone lie to make themself look this financially inept?

Perhaps it's both

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 19:49

i already have money saved for my house in france and the rent here is a lot less than half what i'd be spending on a mortgage allowing me to save more so in a few years i wouldn't of made that much on a house anyways so it wouldn't benefit me

Zocola · 16/01/2024 19:52

Recently had the same , they wont leave you without water. We bought one of those camping stoves, worked a treat along with the microwave. You will manage.

Go back and read the posts about her neighbour

OP hasn’t mentioned neighbour in her original post??

If you put £40k into the HA house plus pay £10k rent you get £0 in return when you move to France. If you put £40k into your own house plus £20k in mortgage payments you'll get most if not all of it back and some when you sell.

If you'd done that you could have also already bought that house in the south of France and used it for holidays and rental income netting even more money.

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 19:56

also how do you know i might not be able to get a mortgage?

threatmatrix · 16/01/2024 19:57

so many people out there that would love a new Free Kitchen.

If you have £40k plus enough to buy a house outright in France, you probably have enough to pay cash for a house in the UK. Someone with that sort of capital shouldn't have any problems getting a mortgage. But you didn't say you couldn't get one, you said you didn't want one, which bits of what you post should I believe?

zeddip · 16/01/2024 20:00

I'm afraid this is just how it is when building work is going on. Best bet is to try set up a temp kitchen in your living room. We spent many many weeks without the entire of our downstairs with a toddler. We washed up in an ancient avocado bathtub. It was tough going but worth it in the end.

So you are taking a home away from someone who would desperately need it. 👏👏👏👏

This thread has got really nasty.

Yikes

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 20:03

this is my house for life if i want it? and i'm entitled to it ????

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 20:07

i didn't have 40k upfront to do my kitchen and garden they were obviously done at different times. 🙄 you obviously don't know how much houses go for in the south of france as a mom of 6 i wouldn't be able to afford a house big enough in the u.k. for my family in france i can get a huge house that needs work doing to it for a fraction of the price. anything else you wanna argue about coz you got so butt hurt over me buying a kitchen lol

a. its not free
b. if it was it will be the people with the kind of mentality who think that free always = good!!!!!!

lastchristmas80 · 16/01/2024 20:10

Microwave plugged in living room, washing bowl and fairy liquid to wash everything in the bath (get one of those plug covers which stop at the bits going down), posh pot noodles (try waitrose), dinner picnics, the odd fish and chop shop trip. Think ‘blitz spirit’, it’s only a couple of weeks.

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 20:10

financially inept??? yeah ok 🤣

You spent £40k outright on someone else's house, with no intention to stay permanently. I would say that's quite inept.

JenniferBooth · 16/01/2024 20:12

@lastchristmas80 i tried to put a shower strainer in a bath plughole The plug does have to be fully in the plughole for the water to stay in the bath.
