To ask to be temporarily rehoused whilst new kitchen installed?

I will preface this by saying I KNOW I’m very lucky to have a HA house, and I KNOW I’m very lucky to be getting a brand new kitchen for free.

So as above, I have work commencing on 22nd January to rip out the old kitchen and replace it. I don’t have a choice in this, according to the documents, I am unable to say no it’s fine, I’ll keep the old one. I’ve been told the works will take 2 weeks, as it also involves taking up the tiled floor and replacing it with lino.

It’s just dawning on me what a nightmare this will be. I have to completely empty the kitchen obviously, but there’s not really anywhere to put the stuff, it’s a very small house (just living room leading to kitchen/diner downstairs). The big appliances will go outside in the back yard apparently, but everything else will have to be boxed up and kept somewhere. I’ll have no cooking or washing up facilities, and no way of washing or drying clothes.

That’s all pretty standard I know, but my main concern is that I have a disability (CFS) and also both DC are diagnosed with ASD and currently in the house all the time as neither in education. We will essentially be trapped in our bedrooms for 2 weeks as we won’t be able to move in the front room as realistically that’s the only place everything from the kitchen can go. I need to rest…a lot, and the works will be noisy, which will also affect both DC as they struggle badly with loud noises and not being in a calm environment. They’ll also struggle with a team of workmen being in their space for 2 weeks, They both have completely different food aversions and neither of their limited range of foods is conducive to being able to batch cook and set the microwave up somewhere. Realistically it will mean a lot of eating out, but that’s not really affordable for 2 weeks.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and WIBU to ask the HA if there’s anything that could be done to move us while the works are going on? The only family member I could stay with is my DM but she’s a long way away and having works done on her own house which means she doesn’t have a functioning bathroom, so that’s not ideal really.

See if you could go on a carers holiday or could you stay at a family members house. You could also explain your conditions and say no kitchen needed

how do you know she's receiving any benefits for disability ?

Any chance of using the quote button so we know who you are calling a dick?

But it’s not ‘her house’ is it. And whoever owns it has the right to keep it nice. You want the priviledge of doing what you like then buy your own place.

Nasty. Hope you never have to live on benefits because of disability.

Just some horrible comments on here. You should be ashamed of your attitudes towards disabled people and people with less money than you.

@mrsclaus1984 no completely wrong there. It’s an XL bully. I just got it because I thought it makes me look cool and you know, cos I live in a HA house.

Or…maybe none of that is true and I wasn’t so unwell when I got it? And also DD2 is perfectly capable of walking her?

So your CFS just magically appeared one day did it?
also, it’s not fair on a child to have full responsibility of walking a dog!

@mrsclaus1984

So your CFS just magically appeared one day did it?

From the NHS website...

It's more common in women, and tends to develop between your mid-20s and mid-40s.

So yeah, it probably just did fucking appear one day

So which housing association is headhunting you?

Daz57 · 16/01/2024 21:20

Homeowners don’t move out when they have a kitchen fitted.

I and my family (and the dog!) have lived around having walls knocked down plus a new kitchen.
As others have said, there are microwave meals, toast etc plus the occasional meal out.

It is only 14 days. You can manage.

JenniferBooth · 16/01/2024 21:26

@Daz57 homeowners get to choose when its done and choose the company doing it. and also choose not to have it done in the winter

SENwoes · 16/01/2024 21:26

@mrsclaus1984 yes exactly right. Like a large number of illnesses, there was indeed a day that it started. Although I wouldn’t say it was magical. HTH.

Also, fun fact for you, chronic fatigue is a fluctuating condition. There are times when I am unable to do basically anything, and other times where I am able to do more. Although those times tend to come in chunks, a ‘crash’ can last several months but also so can feeling a bit better. Bet that blows your mind. I have been experiencing a bad crash since September.

I am so sorry to hear of your struggles, are you sure that you can’t refuse the offer of a new kitchen? It may depend on the local authority but 2 of my relatives live in LA housing and they have both refused to have new kitchens fitted. One of the kitchens is very very old.

To all the people saying that homeowners get to choose, of course they get to choose, they also get to pay for it. Lots of people would love a new kitchen but can’t afford it sadly.

You’re getting a brand-new kitchen for free, and you have the audacity to moan?

FFS.

It's not going to be a Smallbone one.

Because your relatives know what it will be like

Comedycook · 16/01/2024 21:35

I think arguing the toss with people on this thread is an absolute waste of time.

We all have different lives and experiences. The op has CFS and is feeling overwhelmed. Endlessly having a go at her is unnecessary.

Op...I don't have CFS but I caught a horrid virus during my kitchen refurb...it knocked me for six and everything felt much harder but I got through it.

If I was you I'd focus on a plan to get through the two weeks. Do you have a kind friend who could help organise or pack up your kitchen stuff? Maybe help you a create a little food prep area in your living room? What meals will you need to sort out? Breakfast? Dinner? Do your kids have school dinners or packed lunch? What will they eat? I'm sure some helpful posters will have loads of tips and tricks to help

so many people out there that would love a new Free Kitchen.

Really?

A new sink, lino for the floor. Laminate worksurface and 3 or 4 cupboards.

That suit you would it?

Why on earth do you have a dog if you are reliant on other people to walk him/her for you?! Bet its a staffy…

Fuck off.

I bet the OP and her family love that dog. What were they supposed to do when she became ill? Have it PTS?

And staffies are lovely

Yeah it would. We can't afford it though.

Milsie892 · 16/01/2024 20:19

You are being VERY unreasonable! Why do so many people in social housing think they are entitled! What if you owned your own house and it needed a new kitchen? You’d have to just get on with it!
When we had a new kitchen fitted we had a microwave in the living room. We also had 3 young children.
If a microwave doesn’t suffice then you can buy small portable stoves! Being in social housing doesn’t entitle you everything!!!

Wanna swap?

SENwoes · 16/01/2024 21:45

@Nanny0gg I think that poster just came up with the most stereotypical ‘council estate’ dog she could think of because she’s a bit dim.

Staffies ARE lovely. But anyone who is worried about my poor dog can sleep easy tonight, as I am someone who worked professionally with dogs for years and knows a great deal more about them, their needs and their behaviour than a lot of people, my dog is very well cared for, even though I’m gasp disabled.

PS it’s not a staffie 😂
