To ask to be temporarily rehoused whilst new kitchen installed?

I will preface this by saying I KNOW I’m very lucky to have a HA house, and I KNOW I’m very lucky to be getting a brand new kitchen for free.

So as above, I have work commencing on 22nd January to rip out the old kitchen and replace it. I don’t have a choice in this, according to the documents, I am unable to say no it’s fine, I’ll keep the old one. I’ve been told the works will take 2 weeks, as it also involves taking up the tiled floor and replacing it with lino.

It’s just dawning on me what a nightmare this will be. I have to completely empty the kitchen obviously, but there’s not really anywhere to put the stuff, it’s a very small house (just living room leading to kitchen/diner downstairs). The big appliances will go outside in the back yard apparently, but everything else will have to be boxed up and kept somewhere. I’ll have no cooking or washing up facilities, and no way of washing or drying clothes.

That’s all pretty standard I know, but my main concern is that I have a disability (CFS) and also both DC are diagnosed with ASD and currently in the house all the time as neither in education. We will essentially be trapped in our bedrooms for 2 weeks as we won’t be able to move in the front room as realistically that’s the only place everything from the kitchen can go. I need to rest…a lot, and the works will be noisy, which will also affect both DC as they struggle badly with loud noises and not being in a calm environment. They’ll also struggle with a team of workmen being in their space for 2 weeks, They both have completely different food aversions and neither of their limited range of foods is conducive to being able to batch cook and set the microwave up somewhere. Realistically it will mean a lot of eating out, but that’s not really affordable for 2 weeks.

Has anyone been in a similar situation and WIBU to ask the HA if there’s anything that could be done to move us while the works are going on? The only family member I could stay with is my DM but she’s a long way away and having works done on her own house which means she doesn’t have a functioning bathroom, so that’s not ideal really.

I haven’t read the full thread but I am genuinely shocked by the lack of understanding shown of how much more challenging things like this can be when you have children with ASD, and when you have a disability. Very few people (in the early pages at least) seem to have taken this into account at all before laying into the OP. It sounds very daunting, especially without the backup of family support. OP you have remained very polite despite the unsupportive comments, and I hope it all goes as smoothly as possible for you.

you've obviously never brought a kitchen before they're bloody expensive. and it may not be my house but i live here and i want to live in a nice house. just spent 15grand on nice garden too lol

I don't doubt nice bespoke kitchens are expensive, the cheap shite that housing association, s tend to put in are not ,they left the costings for my new kitchen I think it came in at £2800

SENwoes · 16/01/2024 19:15

@mrsclaus1984 err no they’re not. In my county there are both HA houses and council houses. I can send you the link to my county’s Homefinder site to prove this if you like?

Any other pearls of wisdom?

No bitterness here.

Let's hope the HA don't decide to replace it, eh!

SENwoes · 16/01/2024 19:17

@Nnsphynx22 you’re going to be super sad when your kitchen is due for replacement and they rip yours out to replace it with a cheap one. And you won’t have any choice in that.

Apologies if I’ve missed it OP but what was the response when you asked if it could be delayed for the 6 weeks or so until you would be able to use your mum’s holiday caravan?

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 19:20

why would they replace it lol we got permission silly.

Bitter and poor? You're a class act aren't you?

And yes, as the OP mentioned, if the HA want to replace the kitchens in THEIR properties, they will rip out your 25k kitchen without batting an eyelid. If

I haven’t read the full thread either, but I am genuinely shocked that somebody that not only lives in tax payer subsidised accommodation and is getting a tax payer paid for kitchen, is now wanting hotel accommodation whilst it is installed. It beggars belief. It is no wonder this country is virtually bankrupt. I am glad that I live in a country that has a welfare state and I support that, but OP is taking the piss.

I live in a HS house too and had my kitchen done a few months ago. I have 1 year old twins so was absolutely dreading it as I have bottles to clean and had to cook for them. It honestly wasn’t as bad as I was expecting. It was a bit inconvenient as it took 10 days to complete. But I just put all dirty dishes and bottles I’d accumulated in the day in a washing up bowl and did them every evening in the bath! I kept the fridge freezer in the living room aswel as the microwave and toaster. They managed to work around the washing machine and they didn’t disconnect the cooker at any point. I have a tiny house but it was manageable. We lived off microwave meals and to be honest it was bliss not cooking for 10 days! I just got in pancakes, croissants etc for the babies. They had baby pots and shop bought pasta etc for their other meals. I promise it wasn’t as bad as I was expecting.

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 19:21

why would they replace it we got permission 🙄😂

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 19:22

they won't coz we got permission silly

Ohgollymolly · 16/01/2024 17:40

Oh jeez. Entitled much.

You’ll just have to do like other folk do and just MAKE DO. Set up a makeshift kitchen some place else in your house and just get on with it. Set up a kettle, microwave & slow cooker and you’ll be grand. Lots of variety available with those things. Then the odd chippy tea or pizza.

It amazes me what people expect when they’re already receiving so much from the state. You’d really be in a pickle if you were a home owner, how would you manage without someone else to sort your problems?!

@Ohgollymolly the state is not paying for OP’s kitchen.

HTH

It's their house, they can do whatever the fuck they like.

Babyblackbear78 · 16/01/2024 19:27

@Banditdog I live in a HA house, I've just had new radiators and windows, and my kitchen and bathroom is 3 years old, so I guess I can say that MY taxes from working are paying for it!
I lost my 45k job after becoming disabled due to a car accident. Luckily I'm out of the other side of things and am back in work. Believe me- relying on benefits and being disabled sucks!!

Needmorelego · 16/01/2024 19:27

@Banditdog I suggest you do read the thread before saying shit like that.

Fullofxmascbeer · 16/01/2024 19:28

So what would they do/say if you say no to the kitchen and don’t move stuff out etc?

Livelovebehappy · 16/01/2024 19:28

You say you have a dog. Presumably you take the dog for daily walks? If your dcs don’t attend school, just all get wrapped up and take the dog and all go out for a nice long walk stopping in at a local cafe for something cheap and cheerful to eat. Most cafes are dog friendly. Gets you out for an hour or so each day at least.

Nnsphynx22 · 16/01/2024 19:29

you just sound very bitter and jealous 😂 they're not going to approve a new kitchen then refuse are you dumb? lol

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/01/2024 19:29

WandaWonder · 15/01/2024 04:18

There is no kitchens in Travelodges (not picking on you post!)

Yes this is what I thought - you’d be worse if in a travel lodge type thing as no kitchen at all, and all in one room.

And everything @GreatGateauxsby said I’m afraid.

It is a crappy two weeks, but that’s the real world we all live when works have to be done.

There isn’t enough housing for those who really need it, or need it temporarily, never mind for someone who a perfectly good home.

Babyblackbear78 · 16/01/2024 19:30

@Banditdog most of us are one pay day away from possibly losing our home, not being able to pay bills, not having any food in our cupboards- Be grateful that you have no disabilities in your home!!!

Where is your source that the tax payer are subsidising the OPs home, or paying for her kitchen?

I'll wait....

I can't imagine trying to take my autistic DD to hang out in a cafe. She would never cope.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 16/01/2024 19:31

And I’m sorry to have said that, because I’m NEVER the poster who’s unsympathetic to people who need support.
