To not hate January…

It seems to be such a big thing to so many people. On the radio. They’re always saying how bad January is…

is January really that awful to most of you?

I honestly just feel like it’s a month like all the others, no worse no better.

im curious

To be fair if I'm doing something enjoyable in January I find it's as enjoyable as it would be during any other month. It's more that if I'm feeling a bit sad other times of the year have more things I can fall back on to cheer myself up.

NoDiddy · 15/01/2024 14:49

I quite like January, it feels like quite a chillled month and I like winter so don’t mind that aspect of it. But I also think it feels very long. Once the decorations come down, the festivities end and you get back into your normal routine, Christmas and new year suddenly feels like forever ago but it’s only actually been 3 and 2 weeks (how is it only the 15th!?). Plus having December payday brought forward so you’ve got a long time to wait for the next one doesn’t help 😅

ManchesterLu · 15/01/2024 14:51

I hate it. It's cold, dark and wet. I'm aware that it's pretty much like this from when the clocks go back, but the Christmas prep keeps me busy and gives me something to think about (even though I don't particularly like that), then we get to January and there's just.. nothing.

January is nice if you have a warm house and do't have to worry too much about heating costs

If your home is cold it is miserable

That applies to most things - if you're broke life is pretty awful regardless of the month.

ellie09 · 15/01/2024 15:09

I like January.

The social pressure is off and I become a little more reclusive.

More cosy nights in, more self care, more home cooked meals as its a tight month.

I think I like it as its more simple living.

Next month is DS birthday and the start of a busy year of holidays, events etc so its nice to have some downtime this month!

Perhapsanorhertimewouldbebetter · 15/01/2024 15:21

I don't hate any month tbh, but I suppose winter months may be harder if you, for example, suffer from SAD, have an illness that is worse in cold weather or cannot afford to heat your house.

Ooh, I LOVE January and February. My two favourite months! I'm unusual I know 🤭
I'm a winter and autumn person through and through. I'm not a summer person, it's too intense for me. But December is full of pressure, so in Jan and Feb the pressure is off, and I'm an introvert and people leave me alone. It's a bit like lockdown in a way, which I also was very suited to.

Funnily enough, I've always thought I'd love Narnia before Aslan caused the snow to melt! Always winter, never Christmas - perfect! Apart from the white witch of course...

I liked the white witch. She had some very sound ideas on dealing with irritating kids.

Wish people on here could be a bit more Stoic about winter instead of claiming to have SAD

I love winter but I think it's quite weird that you would be annoyed about people disliking it. I don't get cross about people who like summer.

Also, a lot of people do have SAD. It's not a made-up condition. A lot of people's mood and general health in northern European countries is absolutely affected by lack of sunlight and low vitamin D, because even on a sunny winter day, the position of the sun in winter means you're not getting enough sunlight for a decent vitamin D intake. All of that can mess with your brain chemistry.

This, it’s a physical feeling of heaviness and dullness, similar to depression. It’s relieved by light. It starts in November, gets worse in December and peaks in January then slowly peters off through Feb-March, depending on light levels. If you’ve never had it, you wouldn‘t understand. Count yourselves lucky! I’m as bloody chirpy and optimistic as anyone as soon as the sun comes back!

the80sweregreat · 15/01/2024 19:34

I know a few people who have ' sad' symptoms in winter. For me, I just get it in summer as I cannot bear all that light and sun and heat.
We are all different

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/01/2024 20:18

I have to write the date in full quite a lot in my job and the word "January" is very pleasing to write (it might be a left handed thing). So I'm team January if only for that reason.

Agii · 15/01/2024 20:22

Well,
January at first is tiring, after all the Christmas hullabaloo, people feel tired and the after festive eating the body might not look great, so many jump on the health improvement programmes, which end up badly for a few.

But -
January means that the days are getting longer and lighter
No more stupid Christmas shopping
No more Christmas ads
Can look forward to a new year ahead 😊

Jeschara · 15/01/2024 20:36

I like January and Winter.

VeryHungrySeaCucumber · 16/01/2024 03:31

I actively like January. The days get gradually brighter, the fuss (whether good or bad) of Christmas and New Year is over and it's all packed away. I like to crack on with what needs doing, getting on with career goals, healthy eating (not a diet or Veganuary or dry January, just good healthy meals and not too much alcohol or cake), back to the gym and hobbies that have fallen by the wayside or had an official break for up to 4 weeks over the Dec/Jan holidays. We're spring cleaning at the moment so we can get some minor work done, rearrange things and get some new furniture that we need, and hopefully have got it done before summer so we can enjoy summer in a relaxed fashion.

MrsHughesPinny · 16/01/2024 04:10

I enjoy January. It’s still cold, there’s the prospect of snow, it’s a nice quiet month to have a bit of a reset.

My least favourite month is March. Too far from summer holidays to start looking forward to them, no public holidays, nothing much going on. It goes on forever. I live in a really hot place and the only good thing about March is that it’s not too hot yet!

I hate it. It's freezing, dark all the festive fun is over and it seems to last forever. I wouldn't say I get depressed but it's definitely the worst month for me.

And now we’ve got past ‘miserable Monday’ and whatever else people were describing yesterday as in an attempt to out misery each other, the only way is up 😄

Wannabegreenfingers · 16/01/2024 08:35

Nope, I'm not a fan of the first three months. It's cold. My gas and electric bills are always high. Too much darkness and I don't really like winter clothes. Give me sunshine and flip flops and I'm happy.

It's such bullshit, isn't it? Just like we're all 'supposed' to be ecstatic at Christmas, we're all 'supposed' to be miserable as hell on so called Blue Monday. Well I had a lovely day yesterday - got lots of work done, had a spectacular walk in the cold and sun, and made a nice dinner - so there!

squirrelnutkin10 · 16/01/2024 08:50

Well, sat here in my home office with 4 layers, a wooly hat and thick socks, and still shivering in -4 % whilst fretting about the huge energy bill makes me hate November, December, January and Febrary.
What is to like about being cold all the time, mostly grey skies, lots of rain, trying to keep the house warm, short day......?

Just waiting for Clintons to launch a ‘Miserable Monday’ range 😂

Oh no… I had my children in January February and March so there is a fair bit of excitement and overspending going on for me.

@nicegirl73 that's lovely that you have birthdays in those months. That would certainly cheer me up. Strangely enough both of my children are summer born 😂
