To not hate January…

nicegirl73 · 14/01/2024 00:04

It seems to be such a big thing to so many people. On the radio. They’re always saying how bad January is…

is January really that awful to most of you?

I honestly just feel like it’s a month like all the others, no worse no better.

im curious

I love January! I've never understood the negativity around it. It's a relief to have Christmas out the way and new things to start. I also usually have a little wintery holiday at the start of Jan and have just been to Sweden/Denmark with the kids which was amazing. Went for a run yesterday morning which was very cold at first, but the warmth of the sun was lovely. Then later on in the evening there was a very exciting flurry of snow 😀
Also, it's my birthday today!

tearsandtiaras · 15/01/2024 11:43

Love january-

New goals, projects, intentions for the year

Ridiculous Christmas faff out the way

Savedpassword · 15/01/2024 11:43

I hate the competitive misery and the expectation that we have to be miserable because it’s January. It’s symptomatic of the whole of the UK self diagnosing mental health issues.

BuddhaAtSea · 15/01/2024 11:50

Happy Birthday @WinkyTinky ! Where I am it’s a beautiful sunny and cold day. Enjoy!

I love January, it’s MY month. Started doing RED January 3 years ago, so I exercise every day for at least 30 minutes. It’s just a challenge for myself.
It’s the month I look after myself. Sales for new clothes, really focus on skincare, plan my allotment, health checkups, plan my holiday for the year etc.
It’s getting lighter and it’s amazing weather for walks followed by hearthy soups and fresh bread, you can go to bed at 8 with a book, cause you’re not missing anything out there.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/01/2024 11:51

Everyone feels differently and all ways of being are fine - as long as not hurting anyone of course.

I have had years when I didn’t enjoy Jan at all. This year I’m having quite a nice Jan.

I guess all months depend on what’s going on for you.

Recently I’ve found December more of a struggle tbh!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 15/01/2024 11:52

For me it depends a bit on what the weather is doing - if it’s bright or at least not rainy then I’m happier

Sahara123 · 15/01/2024 11:57

I think every month has its merits! At the moment I can see bulbs appearing, there are daffodils in the shops again so I can treat myself cheaply . Today is -3 but a fantastic sunny day . Tomorrow snow is due so I can either cosy up at home or go for a snowy walk . True there are gloomy days but I just accept that’s what happens in January. I love the changing seasons.

ManateeFair · 15/01/2024 12:17

In general, I like winter, but January is my least favourite winter month. I don't massively hate it, but I'm usually skint and fat after Christmas. Also I don't actually like it when the evenings start getting lighter. I like it when it gets dark earlier. So when everyone starts saying 'Ah well, at least we've got past the shortest day and it gets lighter from now on' I feel a bit sad and wistful.

However, I still prefer January to any of the summer months, really. Especially on a day like today when it's cold, bright and frosty rather than mild, grey and damp.

AddieLoggins2 · 15/01/2024 12:20

I love it, seriously lifes too short to be ' hating ' whole months.

I hate 3 whole seasons!
I hate being cold. Winter is the worst obviously(I love Christmas sooo much, but January and February are awful). Then I hate spring because it pretends its going to be warm, but it isn't. Then I hate autumn because it's starting to get cold and I know more cold is coming. 😂

Oh how I wish I was from a warm country.

You're overthinking this. It's really not that deep.

Bibbidybobbidyroo · 15/01/2024 12:21

There are lots of reasons to dislike it.

The days are often dreary and cold but now there are no christmas lights to warm everything up.

Payday feels oh so long ago and so there isnt money to do much - no one wants to meet up.

There are no celebrations in January - theres always something in the other months!

The last of the autumn leaves are now just brown sludge.

The shops and media told you to eat all the cheese and chocolate in December, and now you are bombarded with 'Cant believe you ate the cake, fatso - heres some protein yoghurts instead'.

ManateeFair · 15/01/2024 12:29

Wish people on here could be a bit more Stoic about winter instead of claiming to have SAD

I love winter but I think it's quite weird that you would be annoyed about people disliking it. I don't get cross about people who like summer.

Also, a lot of people do have SAD. It's not a made-up condition. A lot of people's mood and general health in northern European countries is absolutely affected by lack of sunlight and low vitamin D, because even on a sunny winter day, the position of the sun in winter means you're not getting enough sunlight for a decent vitamin D intake. All of that can mess with your brain chemistry.

WinkyTinky · 15/01/2024 12:31

Ooo, I agree with this @ManateeFair Also I don't actually like it when the evenings start getting lighter. I like it when it gets dark earlier. So when everyone starts saying 'Ah well, at least we've got past the shortest day and it gets lighter from now on' I feel a bit sad and wistful.

I prefer to hide away in the dark, and feel a pang of panic at the prospect of the light nights....

inabubble3 · 15/01/2024 12:32

It’s the length of it- too long a wait til pay day. I was thinking earlier if they could swop the no. Of days in jan and feb that would work better 👌

bastin · 15/01/2024 12:34

I love January, it signals that Christmas is over

Hatenewyear · 15/01/2024 12:36

I'm not a massive fan of Christmas and despise new year so January is a good month, it means it's all over for another 11 months. The nights start to slowly draw out and the lovely clean feeling after the decs come down. We also try and get away in January, although it's later this year.

It's all about seeing the good in things rather than the bad.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 15/01/2024 12:36

I really like it but I like winter the same way most people seem to like summer .

mummylove24 · 15/01/2024 12:41

I have SAD (seasonal affective disorder) and January is always the worst month, just dark cold and gloomy. I don’t spend at Christmas so money isn’t a problem, then there’s cold/flu/covid spreading uurgh. I try to book off sunny holidays in January to help ☀️

TabbyM · 15/01/2024 12:43

@FunnysInLaJardin where are you with daffodils in bloom? Here in Aberdeen there were a few green shoots but now buried under the snow!

orangeblosssom · 15/01/2024 12:49

Daffodils in my garden already.
Plus my birthday month.
Love it

Hatenewyear · 15/01/2024 12:57

Some daffodils out in Devon. They were in December.

IStandWithACrutch · 15/01/2024 13:00

Don’t like January weather or its heating bills.
February 1 is when I perk up a bit.

Lottapianos · 15/01/2024 13:01

Ive just been out for a lunchtime walk (London) and it was pure heaven. Cold wind, warm sun, bright blue sky. Absolutely perfect walking weather 😎

imnotthatkindofmum · 15/01/2024 13:05

Hate it. But mainly as I'm a teacher and it's filled with mock exams and parents evenings

MyFirstLittlePony · 15/01/2024 14:37

January is nice if you have a warm house and do't have to worry too much about heating costs

If your home is cold it is miserable
