To not hate January…

nicegirl73 · 14/01/2024 00:04

It seems to be such a big thing to so many people. On the radio. They’re always saying how bad January is…

is January really that awful to most of you?

I honestly just feel like it’s a month like all the others, no worse no better.

im curious

Love Jan! Go away somewhere warm each Jan/Feb and always have something to look forward to.

Beezknees · 14/01/2024 20:00

I don't hate it. I love every month for different reasons. It starts getting lighter in the evenings in January!

the80sweregreat · 14/01/2024 20:06

I like January and I like winter weather and loath summer and heat

MoneyMoneyMoneyy · 15/01/2024 05:33

I like January - lighter mornings/evenings already

MariaVT65 · 15/01/2024 05:42

I don’t have any beef with January!

I tend to hate September/October/November as weather is crap and lots of illness goes round and it’s not quite xmas. Only things that cheer them up a bit are my kids’ birthdays.

ArcticBells · 15/01/2024 05:52

Love all winter months!

twinklystar23 · 15/01/2024 06:12

Quite a helpful thread for me as usually a Jan/Feb hater. Last few days of drier and a little sun here and there has made a lot of difference. Valuing the peacefulness of the countryside in winter, and no pressures like December and no bloody Xmas tunes in shops!

Spreadthehappiness · 15/01/2024 06:14

I’m not a fan of January. My favourite seasons are Summer and Autumn ( Autumn being my top) and I have lots to look forward to in those months . December is my favourite month by far and after Christmas and New Years is over, I feel sad. It’s not just a sadness over Christmas but a mourning of the past 6 months . Spring feels far away, Summer even further and the days are short. I try and tell myself that the days are also short in November and December and I love those months, however it feels different in January.

This year I have a big trip booked for February and it’s helping me get through the Winter better than usual. I think that’s the problem though . I don’t usually do much over the Winter and the months of January-April drag on.

mrlistersgelfbride · 15/01/2024 07:57

I used to dislike it but this year I'm starting to love it.
There's no pressure to go anywhere or see anyone, unlike the stress of December. You can hibernate a bit, drink hot drinks, curl up and read. Heavenly.

It's nice seeing the lighter nights creeping back in. Apart from being skint, there's a lot to like.

Traumdeuter · 15/01/2024 08:01

I really like January and always plan plenty of things to do - a weekly treat, and making an effort to get out and about at the weekends. On weekday evenings I like to crash on the sofa after dinner/bedtime & read, knit, watch tv, anything I tend not to do as much of when the nights are lighter and the weather’s better.

ilovesooty · 15/01/2024 08:11

I don't like winter but I don't hate January half as much as I hate October, November and December.

WhatNoRaisins · 15/01/2024 08:14

I don't mind the cold myself, I'm more bothered by being too hot. I just find it a bit empty after Christmas.

Maybe if I was a tidier a person I'd appreciate taking down the Christmas decorations and going into New Year with a "fresh start" but I don't, I just miss the light and colour of them.

malificent7 · 15/01/2024 08:15

I like it. Fresh start, beautiful cold, crisp mostly bright weather. Snuggles in front of great tv...traitors, pottery throwdown, fool me once. Eating more healthily. Love!

borisjohnsonsforgottencondom · 15/01/2024 08:43

I love January, for me this is when I spring clean and buy new household items that I avoided due to it "nearly being Christmas" - so September-December.

Lovely crisp weather, days are getting lighter. Perfect!

LlynTegid · 15/01/2024 08:45

It can be if you don't have plans to make it more pleasant. If you are able to afford days out, visits to the theatre or cinema, or even a weekend away, so much the better.

I think it would be a better month for all if we had BST all year around, with daylight until 5pm or so for most people.

EasternStandard · 15/01/2024 09:10

Nice today. Sunny and cold

Bar extra heating bills I prefer it

LifeofBrienne · 15/01/2024 09:16

My fondness for January, like others have said, is partly the turn of the year towards longer days and spring and largely relief that Christmas is over - a season of obligations with a background of annoying hype about the most wonderful time of year blah blah blah. January isn’t too pressured at work and I can think about what I actually want to do for myself. But I’m lucky because I work from home and have flexibility, getting out in the fresh air to do the school run for example. Winters were more depressing when I was leaving the office in the dark at 5.30.

AtomicBlondeRose · 14/01/2024 00:10

I love that the days noticeably start to get longer - the other day I dropped DD off at breakfast club in daylight and left work (just after 4) in daylight and it was the first time both things had happened for a while. So a nice hopeful feeling from that. Also you get some proper cold weather which is nicer than that weird wet windy weather you get before Christmas.

Came on to say this. It all feels a bit hopeful.

MojoDojoCasaHouse · 15/01/2024 09:19

I wouldn’t hate it if I didn’t have to work full time and not see daylight Monday to Friday 🙁

CrunchyCarrot · 15/01/2024 09:21

I like January! It's a birth month for several people I love so that's a bonus. Also, it's a new start, new year, begin looking forward to Spring.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 15/01/2024 09:28

I don't mind it, especially on a blue sunny day like today. We had such a dark rainy autumn that this January has been quite pleasant by comparison.

I don't struggle with cold though. If you hate the cold January is never going to be pleasant in northern countries.

Good point - I am lucky that I can get out for a half hour walk on work days at lunchtime, and my journey to work involves walking down from Liverpool Street and across London Bridge so I do see daylight, although it is dark by home time.

LadyBird1973 · 15/01/2024 11:27

I think if you got paid in mid December and aren't due to be paid again until the end of January, then this can be a long old month!
But generally I am pleased to get a new year and be free from the relentless Christmas preparations and spending!

mealideas2024 · 15/01/2024 11:34

I love every month! January is new beginnings, February is when the daffodils appear, March spring is springing and I adore Easter! Then you've got summer and the autumn is time to get all cosy. Then it's Christmas again.
The only "time" I hate is New Year's Eve, I absolutely detest it. Always have from being a child - no idea why!

Backtoreality1 · 15/01/2024 11:37

I like January - pressure from Christmas and family birthdays is lifted, nobody wants to do much in the way of socialisation. Its just me time and at the moment, without the rain, its perfect for winter walks and some chilly golf games. Not broke as our company paid at the same time as every month and I didn't overspend for Christmas so just enjoying my own company. February would normally be my 'bleugh' month but as I am off overseas for two weeks, even that should be ok.
