Caveat this with I know burglaries are awful and this is a lighthearted take so don't read on if it could be upsetting.

Was on our way out and DH fussing about the double lock on the door and mumbling about not making it easy for burglars to get in, and it just struck me with 'WTAF would they take"?

We have an old TV, sofa is battered, no fancy kitchen devices, only good jewellery is my engagement ring that's permanently on me, everything is digitised and on iPhones which are with us, old laptop, no cash. I had this image of a burglar standing bewildered, shaking their heads feeling sorry for us.

Am I alone in this?

I’ve had my house burgled. It was a horrific experience. House was trashed all through downstairs. Our pet rabbit who stayed in the house was killed by them. Nothing was stolen. Wouldn’t wish the feeling on my worst enemy.

I'm so sorry, that is my worst nightmare 💐

That is awful - so sorry about your rabbit. This would worry me too about my cats. They're so vulnerable.

It’s why burgling is going out of fashion- number if burglaries has plummeted since 1990s. There’s just not that much to Nick with any resale value.

I have wondered this too! growing up in the 90s I remembered loads of people talking about being burgled but now, I don't hear about it ever. I mean, I'm sure it still happens obviously, but I wonder if online scams/phone calls have taken this over instead

Any burglar would be distinctly disappointed here. I don't have nice things. Also, got the classic worst house on the best road, so I think they would be more likely to target the posher ones. Not that I want them to, or think that's ok! Just seems more likely.

Same. I have a modest basement flat on a posh street, with houses worth millions. At one point, a couple of years ago, the houses on my street were targeted.
My place was left untouched!

Geekydeaky · 13/01/2024 21:34

We live in an affluent area but we have nothing of real value in the house, probably the poorest on the street 😂 It's all wealthy old people here.
Two men were around the side of the house at about half two, one morning shortly after we moved in but we have a big window there and our dog heard them and went ballistic barking at them through the window. Luckily she scared them off but they would have been very disappointed if they had gotten in.
She likes to lie on the window sill like a cat watching so she might put off anymore prospect burglars 😂

I got burglared once while l was in the Psychiatric hospital.
They took my record player.. my DVD player .. my television.. my medication including anti depressants and diazepam.
All my CDs and vinyl l had collected scince l was 13.
Some very rare albums.
And get this my microwave turn table plate.
The police told me druggies use the microwave turntable plate to snort their coke from.
Insurance just does not cover memories of my music collection.

JMSA · 13/01/2024 21:36

My pedigree dog still has his balls (not for breeding reasons). I love him so much and am probably going to have nightmares tonight 😭
It's one thing to steal people's belongings, but unbelievably heartless to harm vulnerable family pets.

Same OP. I was broken into a few years ago. I'd been away for a week so had no idea when the break in had happened, but after a good look around I realised they had taken nothing. Just left muddy footprints everywhere.

An elderly couple were broken into near where I lived some years ago, they had a lovely home but very little in the way of value. The burglars smeared faeces all over the interior, smashed glasses, plates, cups, etc, urinated in the beds and turned on taps with the plugs in.
It destroyed them, they moved shortly afterward.

I have a dog but would be afraid a burglar would hurt him, or stab him. I have scissors upstairs, whether I’d use them on an intruder I don’t know!

Absolute fucking scumbags.

My daughter got her garage broken into last September and guess what they took? All her food out of her chest freezer.. what's it coming to when people need to steal food? She had done just a big shop too.. single parent with three ASD teenagers.. but good old Mum to rescue and gave her the money to replace the food and have new lock fitted.

Gonnawashmymouthout · 13/01/2024 21:44

Burgled years ago. I was in the shower. Heard a noise and came out in a towel screaming at them to get the fuck out of my house. They ran.

they had managed to get a jewelry box and an iPod. The jewelry box had mostly costume jewellery so that would have been a disappointment.

at the time I was raging rather than scared

Crabwoman · 13/01/2024 21:50

My parents were burgled a few years ago. Attractive detached edwardian house with a lovely garden and a nice car on the drive. Probably looked like it would contain £££ of stuff.

They waited until they left for the weekend (watched them loading the car wit suitcase etc), jumped the gate into the back garden, took the kitchen window out the frame and ransacked the house. Found absolutely fuck all. My parents had an old 32" TV and a decent desk top, but that's about all. My DM doesn't wear jewellery and their tech, 2x iPhone, 2x Ipads and a camera they took with them.

They stole nothing but the desktop, but caused 10k worth of damage trying to find something to steal (they even ripped the bath panels out).

DameBaggySmith · 13/01/2024 21:53

This house has been burgled twice. Once before we lived here and they took jewellery and once when I left for 20 mins and they took both our cars.

Our house is in a rural area but nothing particularly special. The cars were both quick but again not particularly special. The house isn't overlooked though which makes it more of a target.

We have made several changes to improve security and honestly I wouldn't wish being burgled on anyone.

Goddessonahighway · 13/01/2024 21:55

What's the mentality behind the deliberate damage and smearing of faeces? Is there a psychological reason behind it?

fixies · 13/01/2024 21:55

My friends house got broken into recently and they took nothing! They stole the car but ransacked the house without taking anything. She was quite insulted!

flaeno · 13/01/2024 21:55

I had an old desktop computer stolen when I was a student single mum. And some jewellery, none of it was expensive but it was gold/silver. They just take whatever they can sell easily.

We have a bit of jewellery, some cash, gadgets like tablets/phones/laptops, passports and some camera equipment. I have to admit home security isn't much on our radar and we don't have a safe or any attempt to hide things away.

I thought it was adrenaline, but could be wrong. Bearing in mind, they could also be off their tits ...

mathanxiety · 13/01/2024 22:29

My mum was burgled while on an extended visit with me. Dsis and an aunt of ours were notified by the Gardai and between them were able to clean up the mess the thieves left behind.

We all lied to mum that they must have been startled and left with nothing - only the 'left with nothing' bit was true. They had spent a good deal of time rummaging and left the house an absolute shambles. Luckily Dsis had a good idea of where everything that was strewn around should have been, and our aunt was able to get a cleaning crew to take care of the body fluids.

The only thing I'd worry about is the deliberate damage a burglar would do. There's nothing of any value in my home. Just some sentimental items.

Spite.

And they're psychos.

ThirtyFlirtynThriving · 13/01/2024 22:34

I’d be really upset if they pinch my b&m silverware and my primark earrings.

RedSoloCup · 13/01/2024 22:39

Nope, even our 'big' TV is fooked, old phones a few old iPads a burglar would be pissed off!

Saltyswee · 13/01/2024 22:56

@Zippedydoodahday

Forensics? Which country do you live in ?

PIL we’re broken into and the local well know thug spray painted his name on the wall and they still didn’t charge him.

PinkPomeranian · 13/01/2024 23:04

When I was burgled no electricals were taken but all my jewellery and my husband's cufflinks were taken. Nothing was particularly valuable and a lot was costume jewellery but it was sentimental. The worst thing was knowing that they'd rifled through every bedroom looking for what they wanted. Police said they'd have been in and out very quickly and most likely would have posted straight on to those dodgy cash for gold places. I'm so sad to think of the small items my grandparents gave me being melted down. It shook me for a long time.

Forgottenmypasswordagain · 13/01/2024 23:05

My in-laws were burgled a few years ago and the house was ransacked. They knocked down the xmas tree and stomped on and smashed ornaments. They only took unopened liquor, jewelry but not pearls, not her mink coat. Just electronics and gold and booze and the xmas stockings that were lovingly and carefully filled by mil.
