To ask if a burglar would bother with you?

Caveat this with I know burglaries are awful and this is a lighthearted take so don't read on if it could be upsetting.

Was on our way out and DH fussing about the double lock on the door and mumbling about not making it easy for burglars to get in, and it just struck me with 'WTAF would they take"?

We have an old TV, sofa is battered, no fancy kitchen devices, only good jewellery is my engagement ring that's permanently on me, everything is digitised and on iPhones which are with us, old laptop, no cash. I had this image of a burglar standing bewildered, shaking their heads feeling sorry for us.

Am I alone in this?

I don't have masses of value, a few electronics. I cant imagine TVs are easy to steal these day. Probably actually would be clothes that had the best resell value

My main worry would be them harming my pets or trashing my house. At the end of the day if someone walks away with my laptop I really wouldn't care, its insured and everything is backed up online, but I wouldnt deal with someone trashing my home

Our cars are 10+ years old, and we live in a 1930s terrace in a village of ridiculous wealth….pretty sure they’d pass us by. If they did pop in they’d only find my MacBook. Wedding rings are always on.

However, if they messed the house up any more than the children do I would hunt them down and kill them.

Good luck burglar...

I'm sorry buy your dog looks like a lovebug. is he going to cuddle the burglar to death?

therealcookiemonster · 13/01/2024 20:55

a burglar raiding my house might be tempted to leave me money! lol. I don't even have a TV!

CaramelMac · 13/01/2024 20:56

We have some games consoles downstairs, I don’t expect they’d get much for them but they’d probably take them, and €20 in a drawer from our last holiday. We all sleep on the third floor so I’ve always thought hopefully they’d take the consoles and euros not venture further up.

A lot of our neighbours work at Jaguar and there have been a few thefts of posh cars, they park them up out of the way and if they’re still there two weeks later they send them abroad apparently. They company cars have a tracker on them so they usually get found straightaway.

CranfordScones · 13/01/2024 20:56

In the spirit of the thread: very little to be had here. I self-insure contents ie any loss is more than covered by the saved premiums over the years.

On the other hand: having your place turned over does prey on your mind for a long time. I've been the subject of 2 domestic and one business break-ins. Two of them involved the perps stealing bags of dirty laundry!

Trilateralcommission · 13/01/2024 20:57

with the cost of food etc, i think various foods could be more at risk and chances are easier to sell on

Pussygaloregalapagos · 13/01/2024 20:57

I think they would but we have really noisy and reactive dogs so they may change their mind....

Londonrach1 · 13/01/2024 20:59

Nothing here either ...tv ...was a gift from a kind lady. Ours broke and I asked on local FB page if anyone had a working one...it's 16 inch if that and the last delivered it and I gave her the money.. she said happy Christmas and handed the money back ..I cried ..this 4 years later and still only tv. We not got a single apple thing in the house, no game system nothing. Honestly nothing of value and both cars are over 20 years. But I think it be the fact that someone been in the house that be upsetting.

Medusaismyhero · 13/01/2024 20:59

I'd be mostly worried about my dogs - there have been thefts to order of pedigree dogs in our area a few times.

I don't walk my girls in public locally as that's how they target specific dogs. I have three high value/popular breed dogs. All neutered mind you so no use for breeding but could be taken and sold as pets.

UndertheCedartree · 13/01/2024 21:06

I always think they'd come in and feel a bit sorry for us and maybe leave a bit of cash or something 😂

Having said that my teen has just built his own computer with his own money so that's worth a lot of money. Then there's the skincare my tween has just bought with her Christmas money! 😂 They're both much richer than me.

The only thing I have of value is my grandmother's ring that stays on my finger.

EliflurtleAndTheInfiniteMadness · 13/01/2024 21:10

We have a decent size TV but cheap brand. An old PC that barely turns on, so Id have a good laugh if they got that. Chrome books for school. Wouldn't have any real resale value. Same for DC tablets and phones. But our DC would feel traumatised and I probably wouldn't feel much better. Insurance would cover the loses, the emoional and mental health consequences would be a lot worse.

A friend of mine in highschool, so 20+ years ago got burgled and then maybe 8 weeks later they broke in again. The police told them that wasn't unusual as they know how long it takes for insurance to come through and new things to be purchased so they come back again to take the new stuff. Once was bad enough, but she really struggled with the fact it had happened a second time.

Andthereyougo · 13/01/2024 21:15

They’d be sadly disappointed at what my house had to offer.
The thought of being responsible for jewellery, antiques, expensive tech freaks me out. Nearly everything is second hand shabby chic, apart from my huge sofa. Good luck getting that out the door, it was a bugger to get in and took 3 men. 🤷‍♀️

Bananalanacake · 13/01/2024 21:16

If you have a dog and the dog kills the burglar do you get into trouble, I think the dog should get rewarded but that maybe doesn't happen in the UK. I'm guessing there's a low re offending rate amongst burglars who have been killed in action.

Furrydogmum · 13/01/2024 21:22

Ds has a very expensive gaming computer and we have reasonable cars.. I'd be more worried they'd hurt our two elderly dogs and kittens, we have an 8st "fighting breed" dog too - he's lovely and would probably roll over for them. I worry that he'd be taken for fighting, or any of them as bait animals. Possessions, apart from sentimental items, can generally be replaced.

AnneElliott · 13/01/2024 21:22

When we were burgled they took my husbands laptop but left mine (emblazoned with the name of the Gov Dept I work for - not sure if they knew it would be crap IT or we're worried about being tracked!)

They took my handbag but it had no money in but I lost my drivers licence which was a pain. They didn't make it into the kitchen and so didn't get our phones - the police reckon that my cat disturbed them (we were asleep upstairs). But it was an awful feeling and DS was worried about it for a while after (he was 5). We moved within about 6 months.

But they left the TV and DVD player and Wii. Maybe those aren't as sellable anymore?

Cosycover · 13/01/2024 21:22

They would have a field day at mine.

3 tvs
2 ps5
2 ps4
Switch
3 vr headsets
2 gaming pc's
Laptop
2 ipads

Hopefully it never happens!

NannyGythaOgg · 13/01/2024 21:23

I got burgled once - about 25 years ago.

Even the insurance company said "is that all?" when I put my claim in. I can't remember how much it was for but was way less then a thousand. (Maybe 4 to 4 hundred)

IMustDoMoreExercise · 13/01/2024 21:23

I don't have any jewellery at all so I bought some cheap jewellery so that they find something.

I also keep cash in an obvious place so they can find it.

PassMeTheCookies · 13/01/2024 21:26

I got broken into a few years ago and it really unsettled me for a long time, even still now I think. I wasn't home when they broke in, but that feeling of somebody having been in my home, having gone through my underwear drawer, having ransacked through sentimental items without any due care really unsettled me. The thought of having been home also worried me - what if they'd have come into my bedroom, hurt me, attacked me. It was the "what ifs" that affected me more than what they stole. My insurance covered what stuff they did take (which included an old tv - I wish I'd had CCTV then to see how they got away with that), but the mental toll it had on me couldn't have been paid off.

I’ve had my house burgled. It was a horrific experience. House was trashed all through downstairs. Our pet rabbit who stayed in the house was killed by them. Nothing was stolen. Wouldn’t wish the feeling on my worst enemy.

Oh, I'm so sorry. That is just awful FlowersSad

Greenpolkadot · 13/01/2024 21:27

I have nice jewelry, not worth a lot of money but sentimental.
Two PC's two iPad's two laptops.
A cabinet full silver items most that have been gifted to me and precious because of that.
I sleep very lightly and sometimes wonder what would I do if I heard someone trying to break in .
Think I might spray them in the face with an aerosol of some sort

PowerhouseOfTheCell · 13/01/2024 21:28

We were burgled Xmas time circa 2010. So they could of had a field day with presents etc and stolen DDog who was just a tiny puppy... they got off with one card and 3 selections boxes Confused they were caught later on in the night with tones of swag so they must of just not fancied what we had to offer

Caggers · 13/01/2024 21:30

I have at least £15k in cash hidden in my house at all times.

And expensive pets. Not hidden.
