There's a wonderful recording of him reading "Under Milk Wood". I fell in love with it as soon as he got to "limping invisible down to the sloeblack, slow, black, crowblack, fishing boat-bobbing sea".

It was over 50 years ago that I first heard it, and it's still there, in whatever the aural equivalent of the mind's eye is. When I read it, it's his voice I hear.

Ooh thanks - I will check this out. I was going to say young Martin Sheen in movies/TV has an extremely sexy voice (and is also an absolute beauty, which you wouldn’t necessarily guess from The West Wing).

I think it's a joke based on the fact that, for many years, we never heard his voice on TV because it was replaced by that of an actor. When he was speaking on the news, it always told you on screen it was an actor's voice.

That was 30 years ago!! We’ve heard his voice loads since then.
