To say the word “boobs” in front of prudish SIL

BIL/SIL’s with MIL. We had a nice festive catchup with them and SIL’s sister. SIL comes from a very prudish family and at one point I used the word “boobs” whilst talking about lingerie and she gasped and chuckled in a joky way. Thought nothing more of it until this Thursday.

Thursday just gone MIL was telling me that when SIL/BIL were round theirs the other day she mentioned she was shocked that I used the word “boobs” in company and she personally would have used “breasts or bosoms” instead.

I thought it was bloody pathetic that over a fortnight later she was gossiping about the fact I’d uttered “boobs” and not “breasts/bosoms”. I didn’t even think “boobs” was vulgar to be honest, just informal and casual. She’s such a wet lettuce and a prude!! Should I really have said “breasts or bosoms” or is she being pathetic??

Only time I hear the word bosom is when that awful song comes on the radio, "Everyone needs a bosom for a pillow". Maybe have it playing in the background as you serve her tea in one of those mugs above.

Lmfao 😂

SerafinasGoose · 13/01/2024 12:48

People like this really bring out my childish side. Not sorry 😂

Next time, it's norks. You know you want to!

Easipeelerie · 13/01/2024 12:52

Bosoms sounds very Carry On film. She’s a ridiculous person and. A sty for gossiping with your MIL about you.

Thecatmaster · 13/01/2024 12:52

I would stick with mammary glands in future!

Diamondcurtains · 13/01/2024 12:54

Bosoms?? Is it 1950? 😂😂😂

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 13/01/2024 13:00

Presumably the church elders would have to be notified if you'd used the term "love pillows".

You need to address if directly with SIL,
"I am appalled to have caused you any offence by my use of the term boobs, I had already mentally discarded melons, norks, bazookas, jugs and breasticles as too gauche , the Mitchell brothers, the girls and Phil and Ted as too opaque and tits as a little brash. I could always just (make two handed squeezing gesture and loud honking sound) in future for discretion? What do you think is best? ,"

👏👏👏

I don’t have a problem with the word boobs but you do come across a bit unpleasant calling her a ‘prude’ ‘ pathetic’ and a ‘wet lettuce’

She has difference of opinion to you that’s all - it doesn’t make her less of a person than you. Or you any better than her.

I respectfully disagree being as she took it upon herself to tell other people and portrayed the OP in a bad light. Unless she retold it in a light-hearted jokey way which is possible and it's been (intentionally/unintentionally) misconstrued.

The SIL presumably told the MIL as per OPs post below:

“SIL/BIL were round theirs the other day she mentioned she was shocked that I used the word “boobs” in company and she personally would have used “breasts or bosoms” instead”

I wouldn’t really call that gossiping?

Plus the OP is hardly going to say that it was said in a factual way as she wouldn’t get all the ‘hilarious’ comments from posters saying as many other names for boobs as they can while calling the SIL ridiculous etc.. 🤷🏻‍♀️

StragglyTinsel · 13/01/2024 13:42

if the SIL hadn’t been complaining to her mum about the OP’s uncouth language, and then the MIL passed on the message about acceptable terminology, there’d have been no issue.

Boobs is such a bland word to get worked up about. It seems difficult to imagine how you come to be talking about boobs with someone and they’re shocked you used the term.

Imagine decreeing that only breasts or bosoms is acceptable. 🤦🏻‍♀️

Exactly. She's been complained about as though she's a naughty child, and rebuked in the light of that complaint. That's a liberty. She is a grown adult, and 'boobs' is really very mild when compared with other vulgar but non-swear words; like 'fart', for example.

It's hardly as if she sat there as a guest under someone else's roof and shouted 'SHIT, FUCK, WANK BOLLOCKS!' Although if I were to visit again, I might be sorely tempted ...

Words like 'bosom' or 'bust' are really odd, to my mind. They sound like something undivided, matronly and unsexed.

Spent all morning with Blackadderisms going through my head...

Breasty dumplings!

Whichwhatnow · 13/01/2024 15:02

I think you need to put on the Ali G song next time.

My sister is a Julie and loves singing along to 'Me Juulie! Girl you turn me on with your big babylons!'

LaurieStrode · 13/01/2024 15:04

"Boobs" is low-class and crass; I wouldn't use it in any context. And I own a pair of HH, so am no stranger to the context.

Ha I love Brimful of Asha.

Op maybe you need a bosom/tit/dirty pillow/big babylon etc etc playlist for the next visit?

It makes SIL more couth.

I often wonder why so many here seem to pride themselves at living to the lowest common denominator.

PiggieWig · 13/01/2024 15:07

Even my HV and GP say boobs

Low class?!!' Ffs!

Edited

I don't think she started the thread for traffic she sounded generally a bit put out (no pun intended 😆).
