To say the word “boobs” in front of prudish SIL

BIL/SIL’s with MIL. We had a nice festive catchup with them and SIL’s sister. SIL comes from a very prudish family and at one point I used the word “boobs” whilst talking about lingerie and she gasped and chuckled in a joky way. Thought nothing more of it until this Thursday.

Thursday just gone MIL was telling me that when SIL/BIL were round theirs the other day she mentioned she was shocked that I used the word “boobs” in company and she personally would have used “breasts or bosoms” instead.

I thought it was bloody pathetic that over a fortnight later she was gossiping about the fact I’d uttered “boobs” and not “breasts/bosoms”. I didn’t even think “boobs” was vulgar to be honest, just informal and casual. She’s such a wet lettuce and a prude!! Should I really have said “breasts or bosoms” or is she being pathetic??

I read a lot of historical romance novels in my youth. Lots of bosoms and gasping too.

But I think that would have been a bosom as a whole and not individual breasts.

Hand her the smelling salts next time, especially if you mention how much her "preciousness" gets on your tits 😁

Outthedoor24 · 13/01/2024 10:11

Sorry to be pedantic but Bosom - is that not the two of them together, rather than singular, like the outline given by clothes, or bust?
I've never heard it said as bosoms. Might be a regional thing.

However Op your not wrong to call them boobs - has she never came across a boob tube, no other word for it.

She might have a nanny fit round here the Breastfeeding Support Group became informally known as "Boob Group"!

NoNameisGoodEnough · 13/01/2024 10:11

What was your MIL's reaction when telling you this? Did she think it was ridiculous or that you should tone it down for SIL in future?

Outthedoor24 · 13/01/2024 10:13

@CaptainMyCaptain cross post. That's what I thought too bosom is like bust

Outthedoor24 · 13/01/2024 10:13

Op how old is SIL?

StarlightLady · 13/01/2024 10:14

I wonder how she would react if l told her that when l go on holiday l get my tits out in the sun?

Mywhoopdeedoo · 13/01/2024 10:14

I would very loudly talk about my vag and flaps next time, maybe throw in minge for good measure 👍🏻

cockadoodledandy · 13/01/2024 10:15

My 8 year old says boobs or boobies. Perfectly normal. She must struggle through everyday life.

rainbowsparkle28 · 13/01/2024 10:15

She needs to get a grip 🙄😂

I’ve only ever heard “bosoms” in Carry On films.

The Girls or Mammaries, I think you should try a different phrase each time to keep it interesting.

This!! Lots of ideas on here....

HardStareBear · 13/01/2024 10:16

I've now got the Otto Titslinger song from 'Beaches' going on in my head.

WhamBamThankU · 13/01/2024 10:17

Say bewbs next time

FlyMeToTheMoooooon · 13/01/2024 10:22

How about melons?

But, seriously, who calls them bosoms in 2024? 🤣🤣🤣

(.)(.)

Hamster7909 · 13/01/2024 10:32

Oh wow she’d have hated our house - when I was breastfeeding our youngest my 4 year old would yell ‘Mummy are you boobing DC?’ from another room 😂

TheFormidableMrsC · 13/01/2024 10:33

I dare you to say "fanjo" in front of her.

Sauvblanctime · 13/01/2024 10:34

‘Juggernauts’

FastnetLundyRockall · 13/01/2024 10:39

Bosoms should always be either heaving with passion as per Mills and Boon or hoiked in outrage 😀
This thread has decided me to always call them Bristol from now on

mrsDracoMalfoy · 13/01/2024 10:41

Breasticles. Like Testicles but breasts.

TroysMammy · 13/01/2024 10:43

Udders, hooters or puppies. I use tits and so does my 80 year old mother but usually when saying "your father gets on my tits". Figuratively speaking of course, he's 83 😀

‘Juggernauts’

You always get a show off 😂😂😂

mondaytosunday · 13/01/2024 10:57

While I hate the word 'boobs' myself I wouldn't get offended at all and have used it myself. Bosoms seems hopelessly old fashioned and 'breasts' more clinical (like talking about breastfeeding or cancer), though if I was making a catty comment about someone along the lines of 'her breasts look terrible in that dress', it would be that word I'd use, though I think it would be more usual to say 'boobs'. I wouldn't say 'boobs' in front of royalty though...(I'm sure they have a completely crass word they use amongst themselves)!

strawberryswizzler · 13/01/2024 11:06

sorry op, you now have no choice but to talk about titties everytime you see her
