How often do you talk to your boss?

Just curious how often people speak to their boss either in person or mobile/teams etc.

Not talking about emails, texts etc.

Is this driven by them or you?

Would you prefer more or less communication?

WFH and have meetings every fortnight. He rarely calls in-between. We're back in the office once a week soon though.

I line manage 2 people and check in with them once a week if we haven't already spoken that week.

Recently promoted, but before that at least daily and more often than not multiple times a day. We worked together on fast paced projects so had an almost
constant dialogue so we were always up to date on the latest position.

Since promotion they’re still senior to me but no longer in my direct line of management. I speak to my new performance manager once a month and the person at the head of my business unit probably once every six weeks, but I now have complete autonomy over my role and really only need to speak to my boss if I need support or if I’m not delivering.

We have a team meeting scheduled once a week but it's often cancelled if one or more of us has a holiday or meeting. Other than that maybe once a week but it's very ad hoc. We're in different countries so there tends to need to be a reason to speak rather than just bumping into each other and having a chat in the office.

Grendell · 12/01/2024 14:26

Once a year she calls with my raise amount. That's it. Never met her in person.

Slicedpeaches · 12/01/2024 14:27

The actual boss I have met them twice, once during the hiring process last February and once when they came to support after a major incident, in July.
Other than that- never see them. I do see shift leads every shift.

My boss is a Director. We have a 121 every week for 2 hours. Outside of that we may speak if something urgent comes up, but other than that we don't speak much. I normally speak to my team every day or at least every other day.

coxesorangepippin · 12/01/2024 14:29

Not that often

We're WFH

He's not the most sociable person

mindworkingovertime · 12/01/2024 14:33

I have 2 directors, message every day via Teams, mostly work stuff but some chat. I'm in the office 2 days a week so chat to them then F2F, casual chat, anything work still comes in via Teams/email, i sit by one of them and the team and we have a great laugh.

blue22222 · 12/01/2024 14:44

I try to avoid it at all costs. I work in retail, they are absolutely awful and a bully.

JaceLancs · 12/01/2024 14:45

We meet in person every 6-8 weeks
Exchange email re queries
Phone contact if necessary - which is probably every 2-3 on average

CatamaranViper · 12/01/2024 14:46

Every day I'm at work. He calls me for a chat or comes into the office.

He has adopted me as a 'work daughter'.

Toomuch44 · 12/01/2024 14:50

Two jobs, both manage about 80-100 people.

I cross paths with one about once every six weeks and say 'hello'. Suits me!

My other manager is lovely, says 'hello' to me at some point in the day and we often have a joke about 'a glass of strong to drink' that evening. We also have headsets on, and I normally need to check something with him at some point in the day (we all do).

Unmute · 12/01/2024 14:53

Multiple times a day, via Teams. We never meet face-to-face since we're at opposite ends of the country. Some work related talk (it's only the two of us in the team and we work closely together on most things) and we also chat a lot about our dogs, The Traitors, life in general.

I live alone and try and avoid the office as much as possible, so it's good to have someone to talk to throughout the day and my manager is a genuinely lovely person.

cakecoffeecakecoffee · 12/01/2024 14:54

Most days - sometimes we miss a day if there’s no need.

we have formal supervision monthly but we often need to discuss little things each day. Usually by TEAMS.

WhereverIlaymycatthatsmyhome · 12/01/2024 14:55

Legal sector, I only work four days a week.

I probably see her face to face three times a month. Phone calls twice a week (unless the shit has hit the fan) and teams meetings we are both attending as part of a wider group twice a week.

I would prefer fewer phone calls as she’s a talker. Aside from that, it’s all good. I know she will be there for me if I need her. I am very independent and self sufficient, so she knows that on the rare occasions I call her, it’s important.

LoobyDop · 12/01/2024 14:55

Brief exchange of Teams messages 2-3 times a week. If we’re in bigger non-team meetings together we often share thoughts in DMs. Proper 121 every 3 weeks.

lavenderphase · 12/01/2024 14:56

Outside of scheduled meetings for the team which are weekly, we speak when needed.

Sometimes not at all in a week and sometimes a few times. Depends what's going on.

RandomUsernameHere · 12/01/2024 15:04

Twice a week for a quick scheduled call. Might speak in addition to that if it's about something where it's easier to call than email or Teams message.

sadie93 · 12/01/2024 15:08

My manager is in the US (8 hours time difference). We have a Zoom 1-1 every two weeks. In between that we also chat in Slack when necessary, this could be 4-5 times a week or not at all, depending. We also see each other in team calls 4 times a week.

We meet in person once a year.

The current situation works fine for me, since I can contact them on Slack whenever I need to.

Mammyloveswine · 12/01/2024 15:14

All the time.. I'm a member of the senior leadership team in a small primary school though! He's always ringing me about various work things and we speak several times a day.

stargirl1701 · 12/01/2024 15:34

Every day in the staffroom. I'm a primary school teacher.
