For ages I thought there was a poster called Tia. I always used to think it was a bit weird that they would sign their name....not very anonymous. Now I realise it means thanks in advance.
I am 45.

That sloths aren't mythical creatures...

StopTheQtipWhenTheresResistance · 12/01/2024 05:20

When I was a kid, I would regularly see the TO LET signs. I genuinely thought it was a sign directing you to a public toilet but the I had dropped off. I even asked my dad why they don't put the I back on 😂

Jewelanemone · 12/01/2024 05:21

This is a brilliant and educational thread!

For me, finding out that the little open pot/number symbol on toiletries indicates its 'use by" time 🙂

I was 9 when I decided to test the car cigarette lighter to see if it was hot.

I didn't do THAT, but it's exactly the sort of daft move I did tend to do...

I found out recently that electric cars are automatic rather than manual as they don't have gear boxes. Makes sense when you think about it... which I hadn't really. I've never driven an electric car. The closest I've come was we had a hybrid hire car once...

Shit! I even had a Nissan Leaf for 5 years. I just thought I was lucky that my version was automatic.

We've had the piggy, we've had the envelope vests, but weirdly not had the "side of the petrol cap on the petrol pump symbol" yet... can we get a bingo?

Oh and something about the dials on toasters, incorrect backronyms and TO LET signs...

Don't forget the dandelions!

I love threads like these. I always learn something from them.

I was about 32 before I realised why so very many artists chose to call their piece "Untitled".

Ummm…… why? Isn’t it because they can’t think of one?

For years I thought Gwasanaethau meant Swansea and vaguely wondered why there were signs to it along the entire Welsh M4.

That was my thought too………. For more than 50 years….😵‍💫🫣

Driving through ROI and wondering why there were SO many roads leading to 'Amach', thought this town must be pretty accessible from everywhere before copping on that 'amach' in Irish means 'exit' 🤣 ( I am Irish which makes this worse 🙈😆)

My dad did the same when we first moved to Germany and he saw all the signs for 'Ausfart'!

....and the dooby dots on the side of cling film boxes that you poke in to make a life-changing cling film dispenser!

What!!!

I need to stop. I clearly am nowhere near as intelligent as I thought!

When I got my first office job we had a whiteboard updated daily with the whereabouts of staff who were frequently out on site visits.

It took me a while before the penny dropped that 'TOIL' wasn't a commentary on the arduous nature of their appointments and actually stood for 'time off in lieu'.

I had a colleague who wouldn’t fill the board in for TOIL because she thought it meant you had to say when you were going to the loo….

I only found out a few years ago that adverts for time-served tradesmen didn't mean that they had been to prison!

I wondered why you'd advertise that you'd been to prison. I thought it must be a requirement if you'd learned your trade in prison.

I avoided them as didn't want a tradesman who was time-served 20 years in my house. They must have done something really bad.

My DH had thought the same.

Turns out they're just experienced trades people!! No criminal record required.

They pull down
So if you've had a poo drama with baby, pull them down not over the head

I don't have DC so don't ask me why I have retained this information but can't remember my computer password

This would have been useful to know before my kids were adults 🤣🤣🤣

I learned that cashew nuts grow out of cashew fruits (also edible) and that melons grow on the ground when I first saw both for real, in my mid-thirties 😳 I'd thought cashews were, you know, nuts. And that melons probably grew on bushes, I'd never asked!

I only knew watermelons grow on the ground because of Minecraft

Errr, all autos have a gearbox.

That ducks can fly 🙈. Only realised this at around age 39 😂

Some of them are amazingly fast fliers, too. The red-breasted merganser can hit 80mph in level flight.

I always thought you searched for something with a fine toothcomb. Thought a toothcomb was some ancient implement.

About 2 years ago it dawned on me, out of nowhere, that it's a fine-tooth(ed) comb, ie a comb with very close, fine teeth so nothing much could get thru it unseen💡

Love this! It is often spoken as tooth, not toothed!
Generally used for head lice management!!

Luddite26 · 12/01/2024 06:30

Not really a revelation in the same way but I only realised in the last few years that Sting sings on Dire Straits Money for Nothing. I consider myself a bit knowledgeable music wise and feel like I need battering with a stick for not knowing this and it's so obvious once you know! But I still think omg every time I hear it.

StoatofDisarray · 12/01/2024 06:23

What?!!!

Yes! An open pot with 6M on it means the contents are best used within 6 months!

Not that I ever take any notice of it, of course.

It took me a while to realise that a 'miniseries' is a mini series. I was pronouncing it in my head as 'min-is-eries' and thinking 'what the hell is that?'.

Me too!
But if we were to be pedantic, it should be wrteen as mini-series, so 'they' are in the wrong for misleading us!

@Alalalalalongalalalalalonglonglilong can't help but add to this - "arctus" means bear. Bears live in the arctic. Antarctic means no bears.

I love this and will never ever forget it now 🤓

It means they completed a traditional apprenticeship so were trained to do the job.
