Should I bee in this much pain?

Posting for traffic as utterly beside myself with pain

Had 5 wisdom teeth out under GA yesterday (I actually have 6 wisdom teeth but one was a small underdeveloped one that didn't need to come out) anyway the surgery took 2 hours due to roots being tangled plus having so many out.

Woke up yesterday very swollen sore and groggy after the op but was on heavy duty pain killers.

Last night when I got home the nerve block was wearing off and my god the pain. I'm on cocodamol every 4 hours and ibuprofen plus salt wash and antibiotics. I actually can't believe how much pain I'm in. It's worse than the abscess I had and is worse than childbirth.

God help me if I end up getting dry socket on top of this 😭
It is sheer agony. Is it meant to be this painful? I can't open my mouth I keep swallowing heaps of blood. I can just about take a few tiny sips of squash. I can't sip water due to the blood I just taste blood so I have to have squash.

Anything I can do to ease the pain?
Is it purely because I had so many teeth out or do you think this could possibly might be dry socket already?

The cocodamol and ibuprofen take the pain down 10/10 to a 8.5/10.

Thanks everyone

Bless you, that sounds horrific. I had mine out under GA many years ago and I do remember the first 48 hours being pretty horrific.

What strength co-codamol have they given you? If the codeine is 15mg rather than 30mg could you ring your GP and ask to be prescribed the stronger ones?

Kittylickingplate · 11/01/2024 09:00

You poor thing, I was given a script for Endone (6 tablets) to take with paracetamol and ibuprofen for the first 48hours. It was so bad, you have my sympathy.
It should feel better in a day or two. xx

Kittylickingplate · 11/01/2024 09:01

I think dry socket has a nasty taste?

Thedogscollar · 11/01/2024 09:02

Omg you poor thing......six extractions 😫sounds horrendous.
As pp said I'd call the dentist and see if they could prescribe stronger analgesia for now as your gums must feel like they are on fire.
I really hope you feel better soon. 💐

lunarleap · 11/01/2024 09:04

FIVE!

you poor thing! I would ring and ask if there are stronger painkillers.

RatatouillePie · 11/01/2024 09:05

Yes, the pain is horrific, but it does get MUCH better after a couple of days.

I'd go to see a pharmacist and see if they can give you anything else.

User245569202 · 11/01/2024 09:05

That sounds horrific and most likely caused by swelling, not dry socket. DH is a dental surgeon and prescribes both corticosteriods and painkillers. Both have equally effective painkilling effects (in the context of a wisdom tooth removal) so you're only getting partial relief by just taking painkillers. If you can get in touch with the hospital or a doctor, ask about getting a single dose of predisolone or methylprednisolone or something similar. The anti-inflammatory effect lasts for 24 hours and can significantly relieve the pain. It's also safe to be combined with painkillers so you're not at risk of ODing on cocodamol or ibuprofen.

MeMyBooksAndMyCats · 11/01/2024 09:06

I had ten teeth out in one go, it was horrific for 3 days straight. Literally couldn't do anything but sit there crying with a ice pack on my face.

If you suspect dry socket go back to your dentist immediately, however it is normal to be in a lot of pain especially if they struggled to get one or two out.

flexigirl · 11/01/2024 09:08

Oh op that's sounds just utterly horrendous . I would get an urgent gp appointment and get stronger pain relief , I have oramorph for breakthrough pain and it works amazing . I feel heart sorry for you Flowers

ManateeFair · 11/01/2024 09:08

Oh god, you poor thing.

If you’ve had five wisdom teeth out in one go, then yes, you would expect to be in a lot of pain. It’s a pretty brutal procedure - you’ve basically had two hours of maxillofacial surgery, which is a big deal. I had one very problematic wisdom tooth out under GA and that was bad enough so five in a two hour operation is a lot. That is a long and complicated surgery, not just a trip to the dentist!

I would echo what the PP said about pain relief. It sounds like you need something stronger if possible. Huge sympathy to you; you must be feeling absolutely wretched.

I found that drinking through a straw was easier than sipping! And things like smoothies or milkshakes were good if you can’t manage actual food.

Thank you! I already take steroids for low blood pressure (fludrocortisone) would that be helping at all?

Not the same, but when I had one wisdom tooth taken out, I used arnica spray on the outside of my jaw. It helped.

Khdzgg · 11/01/2024 09:11

I had one out at time and the pain was up there with how I felt after a c section; pain killers only really numbed the pain a little for me

Daniagainagainagain · 11/01/2024 09:14

Thanks all, I might get DH to ring the ward as they said call if I have any problems. I can't talk and I'm struggling to open my mouth to even take the bastard tablets. I'm setting alarms to keep topped up with pain relief but it's awful! I'm so hungry, I managed 3 syringes (I used those bloody calpol syringes to gently press it in my mouth) of very milky readybrek this morning as a spoon is proving problematic.

I'll give smoothies a go today for sure.

Any other suggestions food wise? I tried some soup yesterday but for some reason couldn't stomach it and sweeter things seem to be easier to get down me!

@Daniagainagainagain you will be sore and swollen for probably around 3 weeks. make sure you always have painkillers with you. In this cold weather also make sure you dont let freezing cold air into your mouth. I just had one out and was in agony!

lunarleap · 11/01/2024 09:20

Oh my goodness you poor thing. I feel so much sympathy for you. I hope it improves soon.

I make a smoothie with milk, banana and smooth peanut butter but appreciate that isn’t to everyone’s taste!

Old fashioned Nesquik maybe - not v nutritious I know but would be something?

Greybeardy · 11/01/2024 09:29

Wisdom teeth can be notoriously grim & if it took 2 hours it doesn’t sound straightforward. They’ll almost certainly have given a big dose of dexamethasone (steroid) while you’re asleep. If you’re on hydrocortisone/pred as well as the fludrocort you probably need to follow sick day rules if you’re feeling really rough.

Partyatno10 · 11/01/2024 09:32

McDonald's milkshakes op! Filling, cold so numbs and straw so easy to drink

Banrion · 11/01/2024 09:33

That sounds so awful. I need wisdom teeth extracted and you've put me off! I hope you get some relief soon. Definitely ring them and ask for something more.

Paw2024 · 11/01/2024 09:35

If you've got a blender then
Warm milk, honey, smooth peanut butter, banana, oats, horlicks, hot chocolate, any combination of that works well and is really comforting

MaisyAndTallulah · 11/01/2024 09:44

Oh no, that's soooo so miserable.

My memory of wisdom teeth removal is that 2 popped out easily during a regular dental appointment and the other 2 were dug out during a very unpleasant hospital appointment. 4 injections (the first two didn't work), dentist had his knee on my chest trying to wrench the teeth out, and the intense pain continued for days. I felt like my skull had been drilled and jolted which, tbh, it sorta had been. Its so close to the brain that the pain can be very overwhelming.

It will pass but you have all my sympathy, and I agree it's worse than childbirth.

HesterLee · 11/01/2024 09:45

Try taking buscopan too. It's an anti-spasmodic and can help reduce the throbbing part of the pain.

Idabelle · 11/01/2024 09:54

Please do not drink anything through a straw, that is how you get dry socket!!!
