Should I bee in this much pain?

Posting for traffic as utterly beside myself with pain

Had 5 wisdom teeth out under GA yesterday (I actually have 6 wisdom teeth but one was a small underdeveloped one that didn't need to come out) anyway the surgery took 2 hours due to roots being tangled plus having so many out.

Woke up yesterday very swollen sore and groggy after the op but was on heavy duty pain killers.

Last night when I got home the nerve block was wearing off and my god the pain. I'm on cocodamol every 4 hours and ibuprofen plus salt wash and antibiotics. I actually can't believe how much pain I'm in. It's worse than the abscess I had and is worse than childbirth.

God help me if I end up getting dry socket on top of this 😭
It is sheer agony. Is it meant to be this painful? I can't open my mouth I keep swallowing heaps of blood. I can just about take a few tiny sips of squash. I can't sip water due to the blood I just taste blood so I have to have squash.

Anything I can do to ease the pain?
Is it purely because I had so many teeth out or do you think this could possibly might be dry socket already?

The cocodamol and ibuprofen take the pain down 10/10 to a 8.5/10.

Thanks everyone

Ice cream if you have any might work too (smooth, not the Ben and Jerrys everything but the bin kind!)

Oh you poor thing you have my utmost sympathy.

Please go back to the ward & ask for help or failing that your GP.

When I had 3 wisdom teeth out it was hellish (happily over 2 decades ago though so the memory has faded!) & my dentist pointed out that as my roots are so long he had effectively broken my jaw in three places - it helped me understand why it was so painful & feel better about asking for & taking any drugs they could give me!

gamerchick · 11/01/2024 12:38

Of course it hurts, you've had someone digging around in your head and have open wounds in your jaw.

Why on earth did your dentist extract all of them at once?

You need something decent and something to knock you out at night.

QuestionableMouse · 11/01/2024 12:44

YFood drinks and ice packs. You can get the yFood from Tesco and while they're expensive, they're essentially a meal in a bottle and saw me through having four wisdom teeth out!

It was done by a max fax surgeon, is it not usual to have them all out at once then?

To be fair I think I'd rather get it all over in one go but I may live to regret that tale!

Please do not drink anything through a straw, that is how you get dry socket!!!

😱Nobody told me that when I had mine taken out! 😱Fortunately I didn’t get dry socket, so I must have had a lucky escape. Would have been useful to know, though, obviously!

If it’s done by a maxillofacial surgeon under a general anaesthetic (not just sedation) they do usually take them all out in one go. It’s quite different from having teeth pulled out by the dentist (I’ve experienced both).

If they did them separately it would mean multiple general anaesthetics and a lot of awful pain and recovery on each occasion. Also the OP says she has/had six wisdom teeth so I’m guessing that some of them were crammed together and pretty much had to be removed together because the roots were intertwined.

AffIt · 11/01/2024 13:32

I had all four out under GA in hospital when I was 19 and when the painkillers wore off, it was pretty awful, with the first 48 hours basically being 'take painkillers, sleep, wake up in pain, take more painkillers, repeat'.

I can honestly say it did get significantly easier after that, although it was probably about seven-10 days before I was completely recovered.

TigerJoy · 11/01/2024 15:21

Please ring the ward! That's why they give you the number after surgery.

Oblomov23 · 11/01/2024 15:29

Poor you. Take care.

One has to question how this is allowed / why do we do such operations. It doesn't make sense. Eg she found have had 3 out, then 2 out in 6 months time.

Daniagainagainagain · 11/01/2024 17:16

Sorry, me again, another question

Upon further inspection it seems that I have stitches on my gums where the teeth were pulled. Will these minimise my risk of dry socket? Or will these dissolve sooner than the window of dry socket being a less of a risk?

I remember your other thread @Daniagainagainagai. Sorry to hear this, sounds like you are really suffering. I don't really have any suggestions, stronger painkillers if you can get them. Otherwise it might be a wait out thing, which is awful.
Really hope you feel better soon

PrawnDumplings · 11/01/2024 20:00

Oh lord. I was thinking the other day that I really should get round to having my wisdom tooth extracted. This has put me right off! You poor thing OP. Sending hugs xxx

Emmadaily · 11/01/2024 20:13

Sounds like you are going through the mill OP
Sorry I can't offer any advice though looks like alot of MNs have
So I am here to wish you a very speedy recovery
Take care

Just a few points, the teeth were all taken out at once because it was a ga, if people opt for local it can be done it stages. Try to get better pain relief. Antibiotics aren’t needed at their stage only if it becomes infected, it’s too soon for that at moment. The stitches will help prevent dry socket for fingers crossed and there is a big difference between a extraction and a surgical extraction Which poor op has had 😩

Anickasmidden · 11/01/2024 20:28

It’s allowed if patients request ga 😀

Itiswhysofew · 11/01/2024 20:35

I had one wisdom removed and it was hell. I'd imagine 6 will be excruciating. I always take nurofen rapid relief for dental pain. Hope your discomfort goes v soon.
