Should I bee in this much pain?

Posting for traffic as utterly beside myself with pain

Had 5 wisdom teeth out under GA yesterday (I actually have 6 wisdom teeth but one was a small underdeveloped one that didn't need to come out) anyway the surgery took 2 hours due to roots being tangled plus having so many out.

Woke up yesterday very swollen sore and groggy after the op but was on heavy duty pain killers.

Last night when I got home the nerve block was wearing off and my god the pain. I'm on cocodamol every 4 hours and ibuprofen plus salt wash and antibiotics. I actually can't believe how much pain I'm in. It's worse than the abscess I had and is worse than childbirth.

God help me if I end up getting dry socket on top of this 😭
It is sheer agony. Is it meant to be this painful? I can't open my mouth I keep swallowing heaps of blood. I can just about take a few tiny sips of squash. I can't sip water due to the blood I just taste blood so I have to have squash.

Anything I can do to ease the pain?
Is it purely because I had so many teeth out or do you think this could possibly might be dry socket already?

The cocodamol and ibuprofen take the pain down 10/10 to a 8.5/10.

Thanks everyone

You have my sympathies. I had all four out under GA and I remember the following few days being a blur of agonising pain. It will get better, a bit every day.

If you've got a blender then
Warm milk, honey, smooth peanut butter, banana, oats, horlicks, hot chocolate, any combination of that works well and is really comforting

This sounds so appealing. Going to try warm milk, honey, horlicks and a bit of smooth peanut butter!

Please do not drink anything through a straw, that is how you get dry socket!!!

Yes I'm following this, they said avoid straws so I'm using a syringe to gently push liquids in my mouth at the moment, but only doing it slowly so no suction etc.

Time to get cracking with the blender so that's what I'll do today! Sweet things seem much more appealing.

Does anyone know when I can brush my teeth? It was the only thing I didn't ask. I've got an old teething toothbrush from when DD was tiny.

Can I sterilise that and just brush the front teeth? Even if it's just dipped in mouthwash or salty water?

Sorry you’re having such a problem, it must be awful for you. A few years ago I had a jaw operation to remove a growth and impacted wisdom tooth extracted as a day patient , in hospital under GA.
I was given strong painkillers, antibiotics and antiseptic mouthwash. It took 3 weeks to get over, but at no time was I in any pain.
You should contact your dentist and get better pain relief and some antibiotics, if you don’t already have some.
I spent most of the time eating yoghurt, Muller rice and drinking water through a straw.

Towelrail · 11/01/2024 10:08

Sorry about the pain. I was really hoping this was going to be a honey related anecdote.

Partyatno10 · 11/01/2024 10:08

Oh really? I was never told this. Thanks for the heads up

Beebumble2 · 11/01/2024 10:08

Meant to add, when I was able to open my moth a bit I did gently brush my front teeth, but the antiseptic mouthwash was best. Although, difficult to use.

Apologies. I'm probably not making much sense as I'm still very groggy and on pain meds so feel woozy!

Great! Sorry, I know you didn't say you were drinking through a straw but I see other posters recommending it and it is really not worth the risk.

I had a lot of smoothies after having mine out, just sip from a wide glass or from a spoon. Hope the pain improves for you soon.

whatwouldyadoooo · 11/01/2024 10:20

I had an impacted wisdom tooth removed and I've said so many times in the past that the pain was worse than a c section.
I had a whole week off work. I could only open my mouth about 2cm, I didn't sleep for days with the pain.
I honestly sympathise. I will never let them take another wisdom tooth out again!

Daniagainagainagain · 11/01/2024 10:45

Did anyone else get lock jaw? When did it go away?

TigerJoy · 11/01/2024 10:53

I'm concerned you can't open your mouth and you're struggling even with fluids.

I'd contact the ward ASAP and tell them what you've told us - they may want to see you again.

At the very least say the pain is unmanageable- you don't need to suffer like this in this day and age, at the very least they can give you stronger painkillers.

whatwouldyadoooo · 11/01/2024 10:58

Yep I had lock jaw. My mouth was like a letter box. I had to post stuff through a 1cm gap. It went after about 5 days though.

TheSandgroper · 11/01/2024 11:00

Last time I had a tooth out, I ended up at the emergency doctor near me re the pain and she prescribed tramadol. Apparently it’s good for bone pain, which is what you have.

But you are on something already so check with a pharmacist.

jessycake · 11/01/2024 11:05

I got lockjaw after a repaired filling once , I had it done because I didn't want problems as were were going on a break . I had to squash egg sandwiches and post them in my mouth , take painkillers half an hour before meals, choose anything that was liquid to eat and drink . It got better gradually over three weeks but the good thing was I lost over half a stone .

I find these Huel bottles really good when I can't eat as they are a nutritionally complete meal:

Daniagainagainagain · 11/01/2024 11:11

I'm a little worried about not eating as I'm still struggling to put on weight after cancer / chemo

Would fortisep (sp?) drinks be worth getting?

I can open my mouth just enough to get a tablet in.
God this is brutal isn't it!

Ah thank you! I'll send DH out to get some of these

Hope you feel better soon, it sounds really awful!

LegoDeathTrap · 11/01/2024 11:16

I’d call the dentist and ask to be checked.

I’ve only ever had one removed, without GA, and it was ok. I was not chomping steaks the next day, the area was tender, but I was not in pain. I didn’t even need paracetamols after the first few hours.

I’m not trying to make you feel bad, just saying this is not a necessary consequence of a tooth extraction, and I would get it checked.

Daniagainagainagain · 11/01/2024 11:42

Banrion · 11/01/2024 09:33

That sounds so awful. I need wisdom teeth extracted and you've put me off! I hope you get some relief soon. Definitely ring them and ask for something more.

No no please don't be put off, it's only because I had 5 of the buggers out and some bone removed, I know in the long run it'll be so worth having them removed it's just rough right now!

Are yours impacted? How many do you need removing?

I had my wisdom teeth taken out under general anaesthetic when I was a teenager, I stayed in hospital for 3 or 4 days, and I remember how painful it was, so you have my sympathy, I remember being given a syringe that I filled with warm salty water to flush my mouth out with, I hope you feel better soon.

Yes I had Tramadol, they had to be broken up to post through the gap.
