Why do people spend so much money on these?

AIBU to think that the only possible reason for having a PNP is to be a bit braggy?

My DP wants to get me one for my upcoming birthday, I have said it is a waste of money and to not bother. DP doesn't understand.

Your thoughts?

I really don't understand why no one will just admit it's a status symbol. It's like designer bags, expensive watches, 4x4s in London etc etc. The constant denial is hilarious...oh I just like it?! I mean what on earth is there to particularly like about what letters and numbers are stuck on your car?

As they can be seen on everything from ancient beaten up Corsas to brand new Rolls Royce limousines, I find it hard to see why anybody would regard them as a status symbol.

Exactly what status are they supposed to symbolise?

What all these types of things symbolise...that you can afford it

How is a couple of hundred quid a status symbol?

Flatulence · 11/01/2024 13:27

People can spend their money on whatever they want - why do you care?

And the reality is a lot of personalised plates aren't very expensive. Do you think people with an expensive car or a large house or a designer bag are braggy? Because those are - typically - much more expensive and therefore much more overt signs of having plenty of money.

While I choose not to have personalised plates, I don't care one jot if anyone else wants them.

Yes even lower level items at that price point can be status symbols...just look at your average teenage boy in a pair of £200 trainers ..or a £200 pair of designer sunglasses

Yes lots of people do but cars and property to show off. Is that news to you?

Exactly this.

InAMess2023 · 11/01/2024 13:29

I have one - my birth month, birth day then initials, it cost me £550. One of the advantages of having one is that nobody can tell that my car is ten years old 😂

Literally proving my point ..Again...it's about impressing people then. Why do you give a crap whether people know how old your car is?

I don't see the OP labelling someone "braggy" for owning an Audi though.

Although they can easily estimate it and look it up online if they really want to know 😁

Oh yawn.... I made a joke... you should try it sometime 🙄

End of the day what business is it if yours? I wanted it, I could afford it, I got it....

I think most of them are naff however, some of my friends ones have been a great investment with big financial gains these are 💰 in the bank once sold on.

I think it’s more difficult to clone them.

Edited

I know someone with the same - they have been valued and they now call them their pension.

Comedycook · 11/01/2024 13:42

So no one in the history of the world has ever made a purchase in order to impress anyone else...

Ok

Witchbitch20 · 11/01/2024 13:43

A) it was a present
b) I never have to remember a new number plate when I change cars
c) my cars are always quite common/lots around so it saves my looking as if I’m breaking into someone’s car because it’s the same make/model/colour and I never quite know where I parked in the multi story.

Proud to be a twatty wanker or whatever else accepting a gift makes me.

Get yourself a grip.

Nobody said no one does this. We know you do. You plaster yourself with fake tan to impress others (for the record, fake tan looks ridiculous), but we don't all do this.

Yes some people buy things to impress others. Some people are vain like you, some want to appear better than others; some want to give the impression they have money, but some, well some just do not give a toss about other people.

You are so determined to be right you keep saying the same shit over and over. A clever person would understand different people exist.

Vain....by that reckoning then, you must think any woman who posseses an item of make up must be vain?

No, only the ones who stated they wouldn't use it if they were the last person in the world.

Very few women wear make up if alone in their house with no plans to go out or see anyone. Of course women wear make up to look good and impress people

I'm not arguing; that was my point. It's vanity.

Well it's an admittance that we buy things and present ourselves in a way because we wish to portray a certain image of ourself.

Although according to this thread, absolutely no one else does this....and they only get private plates for "fun". Heaven only knows why don't they chuck out their telly and they can look at the fun number plate all evening

Comedycook · 11/01/2024 14:05

And fyi as you're so interested in my beauty regime...I don't slather myself in fake tan ...I use a small amount of gradual tan on my face so I don't look blue and corpse like. Oh and most people will only notice badly applied fake tan. Decent well applied fake tan will not be noticeable hence why you think you can always tell when someone is wearing it.

Sorry to derail the thread but your comment on what I must look like was extremely rude.

Britpop123 · 11/01/2024 12:51

Do you have pictures on your walls at home? Did you buy them because you liked them? Do they serve no purpose other than being looked at? Were they expensive or affordable?

you see the point? People have things that serve no purpose but they like them. No one cares whether you understand their thought process

On behalf of all artists - please don't compare art to personalised number plates 😩

Trying to work out if you are really not getting it or being a goady fucker at this stage tbh.

Nobody is saying people don't do this. People are saying we do not ALL do this. You seem to think you have for me to admit something here that I haven't already said several times over.

You are the one who cannot see past the end of your nose. I am fully aware that people are very varies and do and enjoy different things for w whole manner of reasons.

Keep painting your fake tan babe, but I won't be discussing any further with someone with such a short sighted view

I'm not at all interested in your beauty regime.

You should work on that chip though...
