Christmas lights

AIBU to think my neighbours across the road should have taken down or switched off their outside Christmas lights by now?

Their entire garden is full of them, 3 sheds, on the outside of their house, flashing blue and white, 24 hours a day since 1 November. Plus a moving projection onto their house once it's dark. We have to have the blinds closed most of the time because it's very distracting, and at night, the blue light gives me a fright when I get up for the loo begause I see a flash of blue and briefly think there's an ambulance or police outside my house. It's doing my head in. Would I be the arse if I asked them to turn it off?

They'll come down soon enough. If it's that much they probably can't be arsed. It's more fun putting them up than taking them down.

HappiestSleeping · 07/01/2024 22:44

I thought they should be down by 12th night which was last Friday. Or at least turned off. I didn't take mine down until yesterday, but they've been off since Thursday.

Hairspray123 · 07/01/2024 23:17

Its the 6th they should come down/be turned off. Some people do 5th (or way before if they are not bothered) but traditionally it should be 6th. But they can do whatever they want if its a nuance just talk to them nicely.

I'm waiting until the kids go back to school. Much easier to do it all with no one moping around. They'll be down soon enough. Mine are a lovely gentle golden colour and absolutely no flashing and would keep them up all winter if I didn't think people would come.on Mumsnet and moan about it 😁

FixItUpChappie · 07/01/2024 23:25

If they are still up in April come back

JingleSnowmanTree · 07/01/2024 23:28

It's their house they can have them up all year if they want to.

if it's bothering you, talk to them, ask them
if they can put them in a shorter time, not have them glad or whatever is bothering you most. Just talk to them, if they have Christmas lights up they're hardly likely to be part of the mafia now are they.

NewName24 · 07/01/2024 23:36

If they've been up since 1st November, I'd have thought you'd have got used to the blue by now.

I'd also have my blind down / curtains drawn once it's dark anyway.

I'm a bit 'live and let live' about the day people take them down. Their bill. Not my issue.

Fionaville · 08/01/2024 00:53

Some people keep them up until Candlemas, so you'd have a few more weeks of it. You can't ask them to take them down. They'll be off soon enough.

Alloftheskies · 08/01/2024 06:13

They might just be winter lights. There's people round here do not take them down until spring. Luckily I like them and think it cheers the street up.

DuckyDaffodil · 08/01/2024 07:18

Thanks for the replies, I am going to ask them what they're planning, and hope they will limit the times they lights are on if they aren't going to be taking them down.

They'll have to keep them up all year now else they're jinxed. It's past 12th night Grin

It used to be traditional to leave decorations up until candlemas I believe. That’s the second of feb. Maybe, like me, they’ve decided to do that this year. It’s so fucking dark and miserable that I couldn’t face taking them down until we have some longer daylight hours.
