Attention seeking woman at work driving me insane

Gloc · 07/01/2024 20:25

Name changed as outing to anyone that works with her!

She’s driving me insane, seriously - to the point where I have urges to shout at her or literally walk out. Shes so loud, constantly shouting and screaming. She’ll literally scream all of a sudden, waits for everyone to ask what’s wrong and then will say “I’m just so bored!” Or “I’ve just remembered it’s pizza for tea!” Or some other stupid shit.

She’ll randomly throw her papers up in the air and say “it’s stressing me out!” And everyone laughs. What exactly is funny about that?? Maybe the first time I’d laugh but when it’s a weekly thing - not so much

On Friday she suddenly slammed her laptop shut and screamed. Of course everyone was like “what?? What??” And she’s sat there lapping up the attention before declaring “I’ve just seen that my favourite band are touring”. Everyone laughed and said “Jesus I thought it was something serious”. It’s never serious, it’s always something stupid.

She’ll get up and suddenly start dancing - even getting up on the tables etc. at Christmas she brought in a load of those dancing snowmen/santas/clapping monkeys etc, set them up all around the office and turned them all on together. The voice was unbearable. The manager made her get rid of them in the end so she screamed and pretended to cry.

The woman infuriates me. I don’t even know why she annoys me so much. I seem to be the only one not laughing! Before anyone says I’m jealous, trust me - I’m the most introverted person ever, the last thing I want is to be centre of attention

She’s actually making me consider changing my job. I can’t stand it. I’m literally dreading going in tomorrow.

She sounds like an absolute horror. I think you are going to have to slap her down for the sake of your own sanity (and eardrums). However, you will need to do it in such a way that she can't run off to HR and lodge a complaint that she's been bullied/belittled/held up to ridicule etc.

Next time she screams, say to her, 'Please stop doing that, I have a terrible headache' and if she tries to massage you or make any physical contact tell her to back off or you'll report her for inappropriate behaviour in the workplace. Hopefully, she'll start to get the message but you will need to be absolutely steely in your resolve - no softening towards her!

Mind you, I can see how you'd be tempted to punch her. It'd be so much quicker.

Gloc · 07/01/2024 22:56

It’s difficult to stand up to her when everyone else is laughing at her though. I don’t want to become the office target.

Jesus we had one of these. Was a bloke though. He had a 'work guitar' which lived in his locker and came out whenever he wasn't the centre of attention the occasion called.

He'd listen to sports on his headphones and whoop like a loon when things went well and swear and shout when things went bad.

Grimchmas · 07/01/2024 22:57

I don't think you should say you have a headache.

"Please stop screaming at work."

No explanation, no apology. Said in a dull monotone voice. If she says why not, have a reply ready that is bland and not arguable:

"It is alarming and distracting. I would like to work in peace."

Are you sure everyone else finds it funny? The guy with the headache can't have. I just can't believe anyone at all would find this sort of distracting behaviour anything other than immensely irritating. Maybe the others all secretly feel the same as you?

StrongasSixpence · 07/01/2024 22:58

I absolutely could not cope with this. My annoying office people only sneeze very loudly and make weird grunting noises at random and I still have to wear noise cancelling headphones to avoid being nicked for GBH.

This is a genuine concern given that she is likely to go crying to HR at the drop of a pin.

I'd badger on at manager and go to their manager if they continue in wet lettuce status. It's incredible that management won't tackle it directly with her.

Cavend · 07/01/2024 23:00

No advice but following the thread. Has anyone reading this ever been out of work? I have, but I am unskilled, and what annoys me is that it seems there is someone like this in every workplace, a real nutcase who disrupts, disassembles, and causes stress and mayhem among co workers. It would be interesting to backtrack and consider how this nightmare conducted herself at the interview. I bet she didn't dance on the table then !

Itsbritneybitch22 · 07/01/2024 23:00

Can you change shifts to when she’s not working? And make sure to tell the manager why?

Why is she allowed to work with people when she’s been accused of bullying? Patience I mean

I don’t know, I think there is much more gone on than I know about to be honest.

I laughed out loud when reading the OP, but would laugh on the other side of my face if I had to work with her.

Gloc · 07/01/2024 23:03

Can’t change shifts as it’s 9-5 5 days a week. The only time it changes is when we’re working a weekend

@Gloc I think she works in my office too. Screeching imbecile who came to our depot on the sick AND NEVER LEFT. All day she's at it like a fucking crow with some road kill. Everything is a drama to be shrieked at to everyone, nothing escapes her. I want to leave...

Isn't there a Catherine Tate character that screams??!

Yes. Any slight sound leads to blood curdling screams. To be fair, I react that way when my kids come in the kitchen behind me.

winewolfhowls · 07/01/2024 23:05

Is she doing it as a work avoidance thing?

I'm the least confrontational person ever but I think I would have to say something.

I suspect most people feel the same as you, but dont have the balls to say it!

Sumthingsweet · 07/01/2024 23:10

Has she got ADHD ?

Went to uni with a girl like this in our house share . She was always so exciteable would sleep around and love the attention make funny noises talk in this back to front language . I do think she had a condition looking back .

Sumthingsweet · 07/01/2024 23:13

No it’s a serious medical condition. It does explain a lot and I def would not mock it just makes sense now

Sumthingsweet · 07/01/2024 23:13

I refuse to laugh about it because I know mums with kids that have it :(

Sumthingsweet · 07/01/2024 23:15

How old is she op ? Could just be immature or with some people work is their whole life and they do need the social interaction

MiniPumpkin · 07/01/2024 23:16

Not that it will drown out the noise, but earphones ? Put some music on, it what I usually do if I can’t see another way out. It usually puts people off speaking lol if it’s attention seeking behaviour, and just ignore it.

NotDoingOk · 07/01/2024 23:18

I would love to borrow this lady for my office, for a month or so. Just to watch some of my Co-workers responses.
