to get slightly irritated when I'm pushed for time and my local lollypop lady...

decides she wants to halt the traffic at regular intervals and let across perfectly capable adults with NO CHILDREN WHATSOEVER with them, who I imagine are quite familiar with road safety by now...Grr. Am I being unreasonable then? Is it just me?

lollipop ladies and men are as rare as hens teeth and should be cherished !!

totaleclipse · 17/03/2008 16:14

I thought they had to help anybody who was there across the road not just children, could be classed as discrimination or something so I'v heard.

TsarChasm · 17/03/2008 16:14

Our Lollipop man is rather flirty and dapper. Just thought I'd add that totally irrelavant comment.

mumfor1standfinaltime · 17/03/2008 16:16

Wish we had a lolly pop lady (or man!), we have to cross 2 majorly busy and big roads to get to playschool and have no crossings at all! Be happy!

janinlondon · 17/03/2008 16:21

Our lollipop lady was run over, and not surprisingly no one wants to take the job on any more....

Twinkie1 · 17/03/2008 16:22

We have an ace lollipop man called Skip - the kids love him and so do the rest of the village - he is our town crier and an OBE too - cherish your lollipop lady - we love ours!

cheesesarnie · 17/03/2008 16:23

i wish we had a lollipop lady or man.

Troutpout · 17/03/2008 16:24

our lollipop lady only helps you across if you have children with you...was most put out one day when i dropped off dd for her first term at school- i thought she was just ignoring me!

Julezboo · 17/03/2008 16:26

our lollypop lady got suspended once for smacking a parent

JingleyJen · 17/03/2008 16:28

the lollipop lady I see is based at a pedestrial crossing and it seems to be her job to press the button to change the lights..
Seems a bit wierd to me.

TsarChasm · 17/03/2008 16:30

Ooh Julez do tell more. Did she wallop someone with her lollipop?

VacheFolle · 17/03/2008 16:31

oh dear is that a warning Julezboo ..must admit my irritation lessens when am not in a rush..!

OP posts:
louii · 17/03/2008 16:32

Ours is based at a pedestrian crossing as well, like how hard is it to press the button yourself, weird

VoluptuaGoodshag · 17/03/2008 16:32

YABU and very selfish - cars should never come before humans and just because you are in a rush, then leave earlier.

I love our lollipop lady, she's not scared to tell anyone off either. More power to her stick!

Troutpout · 17/03/2008 16:33

A man recently moved into the street outside school and promptly (and foolishly) complained about the lollipop lady 'talking loudly to the children early in the morning'

She has stood on that very same corner every morning for 35 years.
He briefly had the wrath of about 500 mothers.

marina · 17/03/2008 16:35

What she is doing is encouraging those pedestrians to set a good example to any children arriving at the crossing point too. Our lollipop lady does this. She is a very friendly local character so does it with a smile.

VacheFolle · 17/03/2008 16:36

(Selfish, unreasonable VacheFolle cowers from Voluptua's wrath)

OP posts:
Desiderata · 17/03/2008 16:36

YABU! Has it occured to you that the pedestrian crossing the road might be a rush, too?

VoluptuaGoodshag · 17/03/2008 16:37

I'm just a big pussy cat really

WowOoo · 17/03/2008 16:38

For me, the slowest/greenest form of transport gets priority. People on foot, then on bikes, then in Robin Reliants and then trains and stuff.

moondog · 17/03/2008 16:38

You miserable get.
I agree,people before cars.
I always laugh at seeing a tough 30 year old bloke being shepharded across protectively.

The one near us is ace-wears mad home made outfits (eg giant Christmas tree) for seasonal events. Or, she did until tossers at Elf & Safety got onto her.

moondog · 17/03/2008 16:39

I will add something else.Let someone out in front of you,I guarantee your courtesy will become contagious and that they in turn will let someone out in front of them.

I'm just a mad old hippy me.

VacheFolle · 17/03/2008 16:39

Well why doesn't he just leg it across then?

OP posts:
Hassled · 17/03/2008 16:41

The thing is that when you've crossed a particular road with DCs and the lollipop lady for enough years, you then feel unable to cross that road without the LL. Ours is completely batty and has purple hair (late 50s), but I always have a mild panic when I realise she's not around.

Lollipop ladies are probably trained in dealing with this reaction and so help us cope by stopping traffic even if we have no DCs - YABU.

VoluptuaGoodshag · 17/03/2008 16:41

Actually I'm on a mission for everyone to be nice to everyone. Everyone seems in such a rush these days that we never take 5 mins just to breath. I know it's just modern life but if I catch myself getting irked by someone or something else I try to imagine that they are having a worse day than me and not get too worked up about it. This doesn't always work granted and I do occasionally cast aside my laid back demenour when I see folk who don't indicate at roundabouts (then I turn into a fiery dragon and burn them to a cinder and dance on their ashes) more
