I hate despise this flat.
I’ve ended up in an adapted property with a wet room.
It’s riddled with damp because of the wet room, I’ve spent thousands on painting and decorating, carpeting when I moved in to make it nice. I fled DV, after less than 2 years it’s all had to come up and be replaced.
Wet room is being “repaired” but I don’t hold much hope.
I’ve no worktops, 4 kitchen cupboards and no space whatsoever and I’ve just had enough. I only realised the further adaptations when comparing my flat to my neighbours and I just feel like walking out. Communal hallway also stinks of cigarettes which comes into my home, HA are aware and have done nothing but send letters out. Despite it being a communal hallway an inspectors also said that the other tenants are okay to smoke cigarettes as it’s not illegal. It might not be illegal but I can’t open my windows cos it comes in all the bedrooms. DD’s stinks so bad of fags she’s in with me and that’s with the window closed.

Im so miserable, the wet room stinks, my shoes and bags have always got mould in. Im on the mutual exchange but no one wants flats and I can’t get a managed move, property is 2 beds and I’m “adequately housed”
I even asked if the housing association had a special register for adapted properties but they don’t.
I can’t afford private rented and wouldn’t pass a credit check due to my ex getting me in debt.

I don’t know what to do, I’m sick of phoning the housing association, sick of being upset and seeing plaster and paint just fall off the wall. I’m at my wits end and I feel like I’m trapped in this place.

Oh love I’m so sorry but that is funny 🤣
Definitely relay that to the housing etc
Or keep on bringing more people and ask them for feedback - two or three sentences in a text message, it helps build your case

WestyNottingham · 18/02/2024 15:54

Just checked in on this post hoping to see that it’s been resolved but I guess not. :( Hope you’re ok OP!

OlderGlaswegianLivingInDevon · 08/08/2024 18:44

It's 6 months + later, are you still living there ! or did it get resolved ?

Aw @CoconutSky sadly not shocked, it's awful though. I really hope younhet something sorted before winter 🙏

JenniferBooth · 10/08/2024 23:18

Im not surprised either @CoconutSky but im disappointed on your behalf

CoconutSky · 11/08/2024 00:45

I’m on the transfer list BAND 1 and I can bid weekly. However it’s ALL 1 bed flats and over 55’s
Kind of pisses me off considering those who could make use of the over 55’s homes are placed on the lowest band for under occupying. Also having neighbour issues further now too so planning on a big fat complaint again 😂

OP I live in a beautiful flat, new kitchen, new bathroom, regular inspections, new carpets, windows and light fittings - no damp at all, any suggestions or complaints I make get sorted pretty quickly.
Everyone compliments it from delivery drivers to emergency services, my DP was ill and we had to call an ambulance and the paramedics asked for a tour whilst he was getting his things together, the police once came to take a witness statement and wanted to look round because it’s an old building in a beautiful area.

Before you think I’m just rubbing it in I should tell you it wasn’t always like this!

Two years ago I had black mould on my ceiling and walls, I had to keep possessions in vacuum bags or they would go mouldy, I had no storage space as cupboards were riddled with damp and there was fungus growing at times.
My bath and shower leaked, the kitchen was ancient and falling to bits, the walls were wet and the whole place absolutely stank of damp despite several plug in air fresheners and two decent size electrical dehumidifiers running 24/7.

I made complaint after complaint and was told it was caused by me, I got told same as you it was from cooking without lids on pans, drying clothes and not ventilating the flat enough.
I got given leaflets about condensation and my local MP just went along with it.

The bathroom and kitchen were fitted with bigger extraction fans but it made no difference.

In the end I emailed pictures and told them I was going to go to the press and shame them, someone set up a just giving page for me that I didn’t know about that before I asked to be removed was heavily circuited.

I got doctors notes saying my depression was partly caused due to living conditions and I made myself an absolute nuisance, I also threatened legal action through advice I got when I used my house insurance so I didn’t have to pay.

DP used to have a flat in Salford through jigsaw before he moved in with me and I’m all too aware of what a nightmare they can be. Luckily his flat was a new build so there were no issues with the property but they were awful dealing with others issues.

I know you’ve been reluctant so far to go to the press but I think it’s the only way you will get this resolved. Tell them you are a victim of DV and don’t want to share your identity, I’m pretty sure they will be happy to go along with this.

Take the worst photos you can and explain about how much it’s affecting you and even link to this thread.

I’ve often wondered how you were getting on since you first posted and it seemed so positive on your last updated. I’m so angry and upset for you that you are still living like this, I know how much it gets you down.

It breaks my heart to think of you getting away from your ex and hopefully redecorating and trying to make a nice home for it to just be pointless because of your living conditions.

Please try shaming jigsaw and show the world what you have had to put up with, I’m proof that it works!
I was in a similar position to you leaving an abusive relationship with thousands of debt and an IVA so I was stuck where I was. I also couldn’t move away as I had a well paid job I loved and couldn’t leave the area.

I’m so house proud now and I know it’s different for you as you need a new property and it’s not a case of just putting the work in if they are insistent it stays an adaptable property but keep fighting until they move you somewhere suitable.

The other thing suggested by pp is to let it get as bad as possible and then show jigsaw. If you can spend any nights at your mums and let the mould grow and damp build up then they might act. It’s a gamble though because if they don’t then you are stuck living with it.

My fingers are crossed for you, you deserve better than this.

Please give more updates because a lot of people were invested and desperately hoping it worked out for you.

punkyKat · 11/08/2024 07:45

Can you do a swap?

ftp · 11/08/2024 12:13

I thought anyone on the list could bid, it was just that priority was given based on band, so if you are in lowest band but just want one of those, you might get if nobody higher wants them

JenniferBooth · 11/08/2024 13:51

Ah yes the good old social housing model that says its lifestyle when its homes unsuited to LIFE.

If you owned your own home people would have asked if you had been missold unsuitable cavity wall insulation. Which has caused mould But if you rent its caused by cooking or drying clothes, Despite the fact its MORE likely that unsuitable CW insulation has been installed in social homes because its forced on tenants who dont have a choice unlike home owners. Because HAs get funding and the contractors get ££££ and are laughing because they know tenants can be blamed because of the attitudes towards tenants in this cuntry! The cavity wall gap is there for a reason.

CookStrait · 11/08/2024 14:08

HA really crap, they’re businesses & only there to make money. I lived in a Stonewater property once, they won’t do anything. Even if they did do a job, it was much worse once they’d finished. I swear they did this to stop you ever asking for another repair. I’d certainly rate council property way above HA.

IME they love their druggies and problem tenants and cant do enough for them Meanwhile i have a property inspection tomorrow because the snoopers charter gas safety engineer noticed that DH and havent decorated in a while. We actually got a letter about our responsibilties re decorating Well if the druggies they keep allocating flats to didnt break into DHs scooter shed which cost him £200 to fix........
And the police are just as bad, Christmas 2018 the estate had a police raid. We all got leaflets put through our doors asking if we knew anything. I sincerely hope they asked the same of the HA who after all have the ACTUAL INFORMATION on the tenants they are now choosing to allocate flats to now that SH has been residualised and welfarised but i have my doubts

Loulouloops · 11/08/2024 14:28

is there any way the refuge can help / get in touch with the HA for you ?

CoconutSky · 11/08/2024 15:07

Can’t do a swap because no one would want it

I think it’s overcrowding that’s causing damp. I don’t think this flats for 2 people at all.

Almost a year since I made this thread. I’m still here.

Please can one of you posters help me with some advice here.
I was placed on the transfer list (all one beds so pointless)
Wet room was done in June (signs of decay showing already)
Theyve now placed vents in the walls however I’ve found new mould.

Kitchen still unusable and DD sleeps in my room as her bedroom is damp and tiny. Please can one of you who has any idea on how to move help.
I literally don’t know what to do my mental health is in the toilet and I can’t carry on like this. I did reactivate another complaint with the Ombudsman however I’ve not heard anything and it’s been 6 months. I’m absolutely desperate I can’t live like this anymore. This flats ruining my life.

I would advise looking at what is offered. You never know if you get a one bed with a separate lounge and a big enough kitchen to put a sofa in. You will be able to get away from the damp possibly

Honestly if you haven't it's time to get the media involved. Nothing like a bit of public shaming to get companies to shift their arses and fix a problem.

And a one bed would be a step up at least over how you're living now so apply for everything.

CoconutSky · 10/12/2024 12:40

They won’t let me move into a one bedroom as it’s deliberately making myself overcrowded. I keep going back and forward with going to the media because I’m so worried about all my details being out there. I don’t want people to see it. Just the housing association.

OP posts:
Heronwatcher · 10/12/2024 12:42

Yes look at everything offered. Even if it’s a 1 bed- if your daughter is sleeping in with you then you’d be no worse off. Document everything, any signs of damp or mould and keep raising with the council. I haven’t re-read the thread but have you gone to your MP?

You could also consider going to a free legal advice service- like Shelter etc to see if they can raise your case.

In the meantime can you invest in a low level heater, like a skirting heater, which is on most of the time to reduce the damp? And obviously make sure you keep vents open, deal with condensation (you can get window film which you can use to make temporary double glazing) etc.

I’d also suggest getting out of the house as much as you can if it’s affecting your mental health, and also maybe make an appointment with your GP in case you might need more help.

Purplebunnie · 10/12/2024 12:49

I've not read the full thread just your update so this may already have been said but I think it's time to get the "P"s involved. Your MP and your GP. If the mould is causing health problems get onto your GP they can get involved with this. Get hold of your MP give them some shit.

Would a dehumidifier help?

Good luck and sending you hugs.

Going to the press is the only way you're going to get anything done. You don't have to be in the story - look at the one I posted way back at the start of this thread.

Post pics here at least - even if you upload them to a hosting site so you can delete them.

Richtea67 · 10/12/2024 13:10

So sorry for your situation OP....can you go to the press and request anonymity due to your situation?

Castellanos · 10/12/2024 13:33

I would def try to get your GPs support too - would they support a temporary transfer to a one bed?

Who is your MP? Worth writing to them as well and YY to requesting to remain anonymous in any media involvement. So sorry this is still going on 😩

JenniferBooth · 10/12/2024 14:09

@CoconutSky i agree with @EmptyTheFrickingBins I think going to the media is the only way you are going to get anywhere now as you have done everything else except contacting your MP
And i am not surprised at all that your HA are still putting you through this
