To just walk out my council house.

I hate despise this flat.
I’ve ended up in an adapted property with a wet room.
It’s riddled with damp because of the wet room, I’ve spent thousands on painting and decorating, carpeting when I moved in to make it nice. I fled DV, after less than 2 years it’s all had to come up and be replaced.
Wet room is being “repaired” but I don’t hold much hope.
I’ve no worktops, 4 kitchen cupboards and no space whatsoever and I’ve just had enough. I only realised the further adaptations when comparing my flat to my neighbours and I just feel like walking out. Communal hallway also stinks of cigarettes which comes into my home, HA are aware and have done nothing but send letters out. Despite it being a communal hallway an inspectors also said that the other tenants are okay to smoke cigarettes as it’s not illegal. It might not be illegal but I can’t open my windows cos it comes in all the bedrooms. DD’s stinks so bad of fags she’s in with me and that’s with the window closed.

Im so miserable, the wet room stinks, my shoes and bags have always got mould in. Im on the mutual exchange but no one wants flats and I can’t get a managed move, property is 2 beds and I’m “adequately housed”
I even asked if the housing association had a special register for adapted properties but they don’t.
I can’t afford private rented and wouldn’t pass a credit check due to my ex getting me in debt.

I don’t know what to do, I’m sick of phoning the housing association, sick of being upset and seeing plaster and paint just fall off the wall. I’m at my wits end and I feel like I’m trapped in this place.

They told me mould in kitchen was due to not putting lids on pans. I don’t even use pans cos I’ve no fucking work top to cook anything anyway so I don’t know how they’ve come to that conclusion lol

Because they are gaslighting cunts!!

stomachameleon · 12/01/2024 15:04

@CoconutSky maybe write down all the options that have been provided by posters on here to talk to them about finishing with 'I don't want to have to ask someone to come in independently and take it to the media'
In fact you could almost insinuate someone is interested in the story.

RandomMess · 12/01/2024 15:19

Anytime anyone refers to the bathroom refuse to use the term wet room and correct anyone who does. Interject and say it is not a wet room and has not been built as such.

Right this is my last ditch attempt before I swallow my pride and go to the papers.

I am phoning my housing officer again tomorrow and laying down the law

This house is not suitable for anyone other than a single disabled person
I cannot live as a disabled person
I am depressed and my mental health is plummeting
Extractor fans do not take months to work and the configuration is all wrong
I understand they can’t remove adaptations therefore it’s their duty to allow me back on the bidding list to find somewhere suitable. If not I’ll ring the MEN.

Making a mental note. My mum has DD tonight because I genuinely have never ever felt so low in my life. I’ve even phoned the Samaritans for fuck sake.

I'm sorry OP this all sounds very stressful!

But it doesn't sound like this place is suitable for a disabled person either! The adaptions aren't working and having damp and water escape from a bathroom when you're in a wheelchair would be even worse than your experience now.

Good luck!

Another horrible night. I need to stay off the exchange pages. Cos I keep looking and checking and it’s just depressing me.
Cleaned and found some new mould. It’s green this week. Suppose its a nice change from the usual black mould.
Im speaking to my housing officer on Monday as there is absolutely no hope. I’m also on the sick from work, due back at uni next Wednesday and I can’t face going in. I don’t want to do anything

To the pp who said OP would end up in a hostel........as part of the new Social Housing Bill they have to find you safe alternative accomodation.

stomachameleon · 12/01/2024 18:52

@CoconutSky I never had any luck with those sites and I was in a four double bed house with two bathrooms. People messed me about and weren't really interested. And I wanted to downsize. You think they would snap my arm off!

stomachameleon · 12/01/2024 18:53

@JenniferBooth I think the Op was worried about that tbh.

CoconutSky · 12/01/2024 19:02

No the one near here is a hostel. You’re not guaranteed self contained flats or anything it’d be a B&B and I’d be put on band 3 as it’s classed as intentionally homeless. Would I rather be in a B&B, absolutely. Am I willing to put my child through it, no.

@stomachameleon I’m sick of them. I’ve joined them all. I don’t know why cos this is a dump and no one would swap. I don’t even want it let alone anyone else hahaha

I went to the local newspaper when my council wouldn't take my official complaint seriously. Instead of complaining to the housing team call the council and talk to the comaolints department and put in a proper complaint, if that doesn't help contact the local papers, make sure ya have plenty photos, documentation etc to back up your side of the story. It's amazing how quickly they can move when it suits them

CornishPorsche · 12/01/2024 19:41

@JenniferBooth it doesn't come into effect until 1st April.

JenniferBooth · 12/01/2024 20:00

Oh ..................interesting

Fullofxmascbeer · 12/01/2024 21:03

Keep on going. They’ll get fed up of all the hassle at some point - surely?

CoconutSky · 12/01/2024 13:41

No the wet room floor has big splits near the skirting. It’s not sealed. Theres a window that opens and a massive extractor fan in the kitchen window, which is another issue, it sticks out that much I can’t even put a blind up and I’ve absolutely no privacy at all.

I don’t use the hob now really just for literally boiling an egg or making pasta/veg for DD. If it can’t be cooked in the oven then it’s not being eaten. It’s just ridiculous.

Re privacy on your window - look on amazon or suchlike place for 'static cling window vinyl' - it's pretty cheap and exceptionally easy to mount using only water and a piece of card or plastic to swipe it firmly down - if you get the 'frosted' finish then you'll still get light coming in but no-one can see so easily inside.

LittleMissSunshiner · 12/01/2024 22:00

Yesterday I had a swift response and immediate action from a team at my local council Environmental Health 'private landlord enforcement' section which I squirrelled around and located an email address for.

It was regarding something very serious affecting our whole estate but regardless, so unexpected that they actually responded immediately, and my HA have done what they've been told.

FYI regarding HAs they are considered 'private landlords' in law and for the purposes of any council enforcement matters.

JenniferBooth · 15/01/2024 19:33

@CoconutSky How did the talk with the housing officer go?

ftp · 15/01/2024 23:06

Did anyone see call the midwife this week. Same issue. More in the paper too.

JenniferBooth · 15/01/2024 23:20

@ftp Plenty of people saying CTM has gone downhill. I guess they dont like this sort of thing being covered.

Midwinter91 · 16/01/2024 13:54

@JenniferBooth I used to live in social housing (shared ownership) and the only requirement was that I earned less than £80k per annum, which as a junior solicitor I did. Some people don’t have a clue haha

JenniferBooth · 17/01/2024 13:30

i have an electrical check next Monday which i have to have and have been forced to have Fine. Macintyre book it for next Monday then i get a phone call this morning asking if they could do it this afternoon as they have had a cancellation (its more likely they have another one round here somewhere and want to do it at the same time) I said no as i have an appointment elsewhere this afternoon which i booked four weeks ago. They really do think we are at home all day every day.

You really need to get a grip. They only offered you the option. It's exactly the same if you rent privately.

Whining about being offered an appointment is really pathetic.

JenniferBooth · 17/01/2024 14:11

@CornishPorsche Im just updating thats all.

JenniferBooth · 17/01/2024 14:13

You obviously havent had 20+ years of contractors pissing you about, Im only going by past experience

RebelMoon · 17/01/2024 14:15

@JenniferBooth this is not your thread. If you think people will want to be kept updated about your bloody electric check start your own thread. I saw there was a new post on this thread and clicked on it hoping it was an update from OP.
