Low key ways to celebrate 40th

Turning 40 in a couple of months, and I don’t want a big party, I drink a lot less compared to when I turned 21 and 30!! Don’t really like the focus being on me so looking for more low key ways to celebrate so I feel I’ve celebrated it but don’t get freaked out?!

One of the things I’ve always enjoyed is to get the train down to London with my H to see a musical or art exhibition. Round number birthdays, I usually pick a holiday.

Royalbloo · 02/01/2024 20:24

Holiday? Dinner then bed? All fine x

Royalbloo · 02/01/2024 20:24

Or a brunch and then a takeaway in your pjs?

Birch101 · 02/01/2024 20:28

Karaoke with friends
Murder mystery dinner
Climb the 02
Games night in or out
Theater
Immersive dining experience
Scuba diving
Tasting menu at a nice restaurant

Weekend away in a favourite place?

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 02/01/2024 20:30

We went away ratter than having a party.

KitKat1985 · 02/01/2024 20:31

Nice afternoon tea for you and close family and friends.
Weekend away.
Good tickets for a show or musical you've been wanting to see.
Go to a very nice Michelin starred restaurant.

caringcarer · 02/01/2024 20:40

I like to celebrate landmark birthdays with a holiday and a new piece of jewellery. I'm lucky because my birthday is at the end of August and as I was a teacher I've never worked on my birthday in my life.

We went to a lido in the morning, had a swim (freezing!), sauna, and brunch. Then went to a nice dinner in the evening. A low-key but marvellous day.

maddening · 02/01/2024 21:11

I just had some v close friends and family at a local restaurant for a low key buffet, couple of party games and a cake

Hiddenpeople · 02/01/2024 21:23

I’m turning 40 next month. I just want to go away! Hoping dh has/will plan something. We had a lovely weekend away for my 30th.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 02/01/2024 21:25

Escape room and dinner with close friends?

GreyhpundGirl · 02/01/2024 21:26

I just went out for dinner with a few friends.

CloseYourMouthLynn · 02/01/2024 21:27

For my 40th I just want a night away in a hotel/spa with DH. The idea of a party terrifies me!

Zanatdy · 02/01/2024 21:27

I went to New York with my childhood friend (to celebrate both our bdays). I went for afternoon tea at the ritz recently and that was special

Fiddledeedeeee · 02/01/2024 21:27

I’m the same in that I don’t want a party etc. so have booked to go away for a few nights to Seville, just the 4 of us.

soupmaker · 02/01/2024 21:39

For my 40th me and DH (ditched the DC) went away for 2 nights to a hotel with a Michelin starred restaurant. We did DB&B. It was utter luxury.

For my 50th we went to London on the Caledonian Sleeper train, booked one night in a 5* hotel, had a brilliant time doing things we really wanted to do in London, more Michelin starred dinners and daytime cocktail drinking before returning on the Sleeper.

We threw a massive party when we got married. Never need to do a party ever again.

MartinsSpareCalculator · 02/01/2024 21:56

If a party was thrown for my birthday I wouldn't go. I've gone away for the weekend or on holiday for all my milestone birthdays.

Createausername1970 · 02/01/2024 21:57

I have always enjoyed reading Gerald Durrell books, so for my 50th we went to Jersey for a long weekend, booked a nice hotel had a very nice time in Jersey, boat trip to Guernsey, and went to GD's zoo on my birthday and booked a behind the scenes tour. Not everyone's cup of tea, but I enjoyed it.
