I honestly hoped they’d name it Huntley, as I absolutely love her.

missed opportunity if ever there was one. <sigh>

Our friend Henk's longer name was Hendrick.

You know. Like Henry.

Not a real name either, I suppose.

That’s what I thought when I heard the name Henk, that it might be a short version of Hendrick/ Henrick.

Just browsing the names list.

I knew a very nice Stuart, it's hard to imagine him blowing my roof off, or causing havoc with the trains. Not like Henk.

i had a nosey at the link about names and how they come about but its now left me wondering what happens if theres more storms than names on the list one year? i know it would be very rare to happen but with the weather lately it doesnt seem that improbable.
do they start a new list? just add random names? restart at the begining but call it no2?

Why on earth do storms need names? Why are we personifying the weather?!

A quick Google will tell you why but here's a copy and paste from Newsround which I deliberately picked as it uses small words:

The Met Office decided to start giving storms names back in 2014, in the same way they do in America.

The first windstorm to be named was Abigail on 10 November 2015.

The Met Office hoped that naming big storms will make people more aware of them and how dangerous they can be.

They think it will be easier to follow the progress of a storm on the TV, radio, or on social media, if it has a name.

Derrick Ryall, from the Met Office, said: "We have seen how naming storms elsewhere in the world raises awareness of severe weather before it strikes."

I like Storm Brian from a few years ago

Why don’t you tell us your name OP so we can mock you?

Gerrit and Henk are Dutch names educate yourself FFS

How come the Dutch got two in a row, that doesn't seem fair

What does deliberately mean? there are so many letters my poor ladybrain is confused.

Dutch storms are notoriously laid back but you don't want to mess with storm Olga when she gets here. Assuming that's the correct pronoun🤔

Another insular, ignorant post. Educate yourself, OP. 🙄

Tell us you're ignorant without telling us you're ignorant 🤣

This. Some people really do live in their small world, ignorant bubble. The brass of the op to actually make a big bold post about this as if she must be right.

Exactly. You can just see the small mind mentality.

mrsclaus1984 · 02/01/2024 20:42

I used to have a GP with this first name, he was Dutch (god, he was ridiculously attractive, and I used to go completely tongue-tied whenever I saw him 😫😂)
