Weird Smell

HulaHula35 · 02/01/2024 15:25

I had covid a few months ago and it did affect my taste and smell, however, this is more recent. Could it be a delayed thing? Has anyone else had this? It's driving me mad!

The following things have the same weird smell to me -
Dish soap
Washing liquid/ detergent
Shampoo
Some sprays/ perfumes (not all)

The smell is hard to explain, it's not exactly unpleasant but I'm getting really sick of it now every time I was my hair/ do the dishes. It's like an old soap smell almost. Laundry detergent is the worst. It's definitely just me because I smelt the same thing when I went to PIL's over Christmas and it was there too. No one else can smell it.

Anyone else?? 😦

Could you be pregnant

ChocolateBiscuit2 · 02/01/2024 15:32

I had the same issue when I first had covid in 2020. Mostly with perfumes.

It actually lasted for a couple of months! But it will go, don’t worry!

I second the above commenter......could you be pregnant?

Hey OP, I first caught civilian 2021 and my sense of smell has not been the same since, ans the impact sounds very similar to you.

Fabric softener makes me feel ill so I have stopped using that. It was fairy non bio, so hardly a strong scent, but thr smell was awful oost covid. My washing detergent is not great but I liked the smell pre covid so am sticking with that. I've had to change my body lotion and I loved it pre covid, but the smell is horrible now. Anything scented with vanilla also makes me queasy.

Some things are OK, I still like my perfume, and some locally produced scented candles I still like.

I guess it must be some chemicals used for scenting products that just smell horrible to us post covid. Bizarre!

Civilian?! Autocorrect, I meant Covid!

HulaHula35 · 02/01/2024 15:37

Definitely not pregnant. 😆

Thanks Chocolate that's good to hear that it didn't last forever!

Yes! That sounds the same. I got a new perfume for Christmas and it just has that horrible smell, whereas my old perfume doesn't.

I actually thought there was something wrong with my washing machine when this started as it smelt so off - DH said it smelt lovely!

I had a similar issue after a very bad cold/flu type virus (not Covid, as it was long before the pandemic). My sense of smell did go back to normal eventually, but I went through several weeks of finding certain smells really hard to stomach. In my case, it wasn't perfumey, soapy type smells but certain food smells. In particular I remember having to leave the room at work because my colleague was eating a tin of chicken soup at her desk and for some reason it just smelled inexplicably rancid to me.

Mapletreelane · 02/01/2024 16:00

@HulaHula35 haha, yes I thought the washing machine was smelly too! Strange one isn't it!

CaramelMac · 02/01/2024 16:08

I got this when I was pregnant, everything smells mouldy. It comes back sometimes randomly but then goes away again after a few days.
