My New Year's resolution is sort out my families passports so we can have an abroad holiday this year. But I get so overwhelmed by it. If someone could explain to me in stupid person terms what I need to do I'd be very grateful.

The situation is as follows:

Mine is still in date but lost. Been lost for about 3 years.

My youngest is 2 and has never had a passport so I'll need a totally new one.

My eldest has a passport which expires in the next few months so will need a new one too.

How much roughly will this cost me? Will I need someone to sign them for us? Thank you to anyone who is clued up on this!

107 in total for their passports if they’re under 16 and 82.50 for yours

Libertyy · 02/01/2024 09:47

This is assuming you’ll be applying online and not via paper application

Libertyy · 02/01/2024 09:48

So 189.50 for two children passports and one adult passport. You didn’t mention your eldest’s age so I’m assuming they’re a child

The website will tell you more clearly and accurately than we can. I will highlight that for the brand new passport (at least) you will need someone to certify the photo and it needs to be a ‘professional’ person. I got passports recently. It didn’t take long at all.

Libertyy · 02/01/2024 09:50

As for countersigning, yes yours will need countersigning as it is lost. Your eldest’s, if he’s under 12, will need countersigning, your youngest will need his countersigning

EmptyYoghurtPot · 02/01/2024 09:52

Go online and follow the instructions- they are step by step and really simple. The site will tell you if you need to have someone sign for either the lost one or the first one - so have someone in mind.
Did mine and my son’s last year and took about 15 minutes to fill in and upload photos (can do them at home but we had them done in a Photo Booth) and passports were here within two weeks.

If your passport is lost, stolen or damaged it needs countersigning when you apply for a new one. Children under 12 need theirs countersigning whether it’s a new passport or a renewal and adults (over 16) who has never had a passport as a child will need theirs countersigning and also anyone who cannot be recognised from their previous passport due to significant changes in appearance, for example, extreme weight loss, surgery etc

AlwaysFreezing · 02/01/2024 09:55

Countersigning is much easier these days too. No need to write a paragraph on the back of a passport photo, you just give the person's (who will be countersigning) emailm address on the application and they receive an email and do it that way.

The online process is very simple as pp said. Don't be afraid of it.

Maybe start with your application. Good luck, you've got this!

Waynettaaa · 02/01/2024 11:40

I've just renewed DD's and it is her first adult passport. Not sure on the age of your DC but if they've previously had a child pp you just renew, don't apply for a new adult one. Its £82.50 for an adult and £53 something for a child.

For a renewal, didn't need anyone to verify her.

The other thing I should have mentioned is that I have got married since losing my passport so id need to put the new one in my new name. Would that cause a problem?

When I did that I had to send my marriage certificate to them. Take a photocopy first, just in case and send registered/tracked post.

CCLCECSC · 02/01/2024 15:21

It shouldn't do. You'll need to send your marriage certificate off as this will have your maiden name on.

Fwiw op I absolutely hate doing stuff like this but the online passport service is actually brilliant.... really user friendly and simple.

Thanks I just get really overwhelmed and then tend to put things off. It might help if I break it down and sort mine first, then deal with the kids ones after.

My eldest is 12 in May, forgot to add his age.

Yes that's what I did. I did my own first because on the kids applications I had to put down my own passport number. So yes, get yours sorted first. Get your photo done first...I went to snappy snaps and they gave me a code I could put into the online form

And don't be put off by the list of people it says can countersign. It's only indicative, it isn't definitive. My job isn't on there and I've successfully countersigned two applications.

What is your job if you don’t mind me asking? It might help people I know with who to ask if they also have the same job

University admin. Really anyone who has their own passport and has known you for the required period is fine.

Hi I renewed my passport online and my brother posted my old one back but didn't bother to pay for tracking 😤 I received a message to say send back your old passport so I phoned up the office and they told me that they had a empty envelope but no passport inside! So I asked the guy nicely that how do you know that the empty envelope belongs to me? He did not answer me because he couldn't explain that a empty envelope with only the passport office address on it could possibly relate to myself ,then I received a message saying that they had received old passport,so I phoned up to check the status and was told that yes we have the old one and we are prosseing your application and if I get any emails asking to send your documents to ignore them. Now I received a letter asking to send documents but didn't state which documents to send.i phoned them and have just been told that they haven't got my old passport and I have to report it missing or stolen! What on earth is going on could anybody possibly advise me on what I should do next I am 90 pounds out of pocket and still have no passport new or old
Agitated 😤🤔 please advise thankyou
