Morning all

Posting out of sheer desperation.
I have an impacted wisdom tooth. I actually have 2 wisdom teeth on the area of concern which is a bit of a rarity.

It's been sore on and off for a week, I managed to get an appointment for Friday but I can't deal with this pain anymore I am literally climbing the walls. I would take the birth of my child over this. My fave is swollen on one side and the inside of my mouth is swollen, my throats on fire.
Rang 111, said nothing they can do and to wait for the appointment.

I've taken nurofen, paracetamol, OTC co-codamol, I am in sheer agony and it's literally driving me insane. I'm tempted to show up in A&E just to see if they can help with this pain, I've never known anything like it.

The teeth were found a few years back when X-ray'd for cosmetic work but they hadn't broken through the skin and weren't giving me trouble.

Surely there has to be something else or someone else I can help? I can't afford to see a private dentist, and the NHS appt is days away

Sorry for posting here but I'm desperate 😭

Hi op I had terrible wisdom tooth pain in the summer and I found mouthwashing with corsadyl and chewing on raw garlic cloves helped on top of the painkillers etc. My sympathies, it's bloody awful. The garlic cloves were surprisingly helpful. Alcohol also helped tbh but check they can go with your painkillers.

ladygindiva · 02/01/2024 22:40

Oh and the dentist wrenched my wisdom tooth out in a matter of minutes in the chair, no hospital required. The sound was grim though, just to prepare you.

Toomanyemails · 03/01/2024 04:43

Argh I'm in this same position, agonising wisdom tooth pain (which I also thought I was too old for, never had any issue before!)
Last night I was able to book an emergency dentist appointment for this afternoon, but I'm up now as I can't sleep through the pain. Very glad you made some progress OP, I'm desperately hoping the dentist today can help me somehow! It's horrible!

Daniagainagainagain · 03/01/2024 08:58

Well the pain today has magnified and I never thought it would even more! I'm in absolute agony I go between crying and begging silent but I'm in so much pain 😭 hoping these antibiotics will help soon. I've taken a diclofenac and it helped initially but now it's worse!!

Well I've had a call from the max fax team just now and I'm having all 6(!!!!) out under GA. They asked me some medical questions and have said they will email and post me a date in the next few days but it will be relatively quick.

I can't believe how quick this whole thing has been as the referral was only done yesterday.

I desperately hope you can get seen today, I know how utterly soul destroying the pain is. I can't even tell you anything that's helped yet. I have some lidocaine gel which has slightly taken the edge off but it goes away in a few minutes.

If you do get seen, ask for a LA injection. It hurt like absolute hell as they injected just away from the tooth but my goodness it was a godsend for a few hours!

When I had awful toothache, I found relief from wrapping a frozen ice pack in a tea towel and holding it on the side of my face. May be worth a try until your appointment

I had 2 impacted wisdom teeth (just one each side!) removed under local anaesthetic with sedation, and it was absolutely fine! Then I had 2 wisdom teeth removed with just local and it was fine too! I got dry socket after that one tho, so I recommend if the pain starts getting WORSE to contact the dentist straightaway, don't wait to see if it settles. I got painkillers, possible antibiotics? (years ago!) and syringes to blast debris outta the sockets with water. Grim, but immediate relief. Good luck, you will be fine xx

I've been given antibiotics and referred for it to be removed at the dental hospital, but that won't happen for a few months apparently. I hope it doesn't get infected again in the meantime, absolute agony!

Sympathy OP - I know how awful dental pain can be and I hope your appointment comes through quickly .

Can you check out what other medication you can alternate your new painkillers with ? I have always alternated ibuprofen and paracetamol so I could take a dose every 3 hours but I don't recognise the medication you've been given. Fingers crossed your antibiotics kick in soon.

Diclofenac is in the same family as ibuprofen I think, it's a NSAID so I'm alternating that with paracetamol, then at night I got some OTC co codamol so I'm having x2 8/500 co codamols after dinner before bed so I can somewhat try and sleep!

The only thing is, I have a very sensitive stomach and the diclofenac is being administered with a slight push up the bottom. (It's a suppository) which I don't look forward to as I'm very much in the camp of exit only when it comes to that hole. Appreciate that's personal preference though.

But here we are! Things we do for pain relief ay!

I , personally, have taken teeth out where the gums have been so badly burned /inflammed by Clove oil use that it has gone through to the bone which has been so badly damaged the tooth had to come out.

It contains Eugenol , which many people are allergic to, but is also highly irritant.

I'll insert a paragraph about its use

While clove oil is usually safe when applied to the skin, repeated use inside the mouth and on the gums can have side effects.
Side effects may include damage to the:

  • gums
  • tooth pulp — the central part of the tooth which is made of connective tissue and cells
  • the skin on the inside of the mouth
  • mucous membranes inside of the mouth
Using dried cloves inside of the mouth can cause sensitivity and irritation, as well as damage the dental tissues. Consuming clove oil can be dangerous for children and may lead to seizures, liver damage, and fluid imbalances. Pregnant women are advised against using this remedy, as it is not known whether clove oil is safe for the growing baby.

I don't think anyone would suggest repeated use but as a stop gap when waiting for an appointment I have found it very useful. All extremes are dangerous aren't they.

Diclofenac is the only strong painkiller I can take although I've always had tablets and I sympathise with the suppository issue. It is a wonderful painkiller in my opinion and I hope it works for you.

It is very strongly recommended you do not use it inside your body at all. Clove oil is Eugenol . Eugenol is enormously irritant. In Roman times etc it was used to stop toothache because basically it is so irritant it kills the pulp (nerve) inside the tooth when applied inside the tooth.

In dentistry it was only ever used inside a tooth and it has now been mostly remived because of the burns ,dermatitis and allergy it produces. Even one app, ication can produce an immediate allergic reaction, even in professional hands not applied to the gums eg https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3794103/#:~:text=However%2C%20eugenol%20causes%20allergic%20contact,dressings%20and%20root%20canal%20cements.

I cannot say strongly enough do not use clove oil in your mouth , I have seen many, many, many people whose problems have been made much worse.

Case Report: An unexpected positive hypersensitive reaction to eugenol

Eugenol is an active, principal aromatic liquid responsible for several pharmacological activities. It is widely used in dental practice to relieve pain arising from various sources, such as pulpitis and dentinal hypersensitivity. As a primary irritant...

Poor OP and others - sending love and pain-free vibes to you all. Heading to the dentist myself this Thursday, nothing like what you're dealing with but I also believe toothache/anything inside the face/head to be the worst, more immersive pain ever. Good luck all.

Daniagainagainagain · 03/01/2024 20:00

Hi all,

The pain tonight is absolutely fucking sheer agony. It's horrific. I'm in tears / screaming, the MN classic 'shaking and crying'.

If I go to A&E will they give me something stronger as the diclofenac isn't doing much at all now and this is 100% worse than birthing my child. I don't even know how I'm typing this. I thought I had a high pain threshold but this has absolutely floored me.

I know it's not an accident nor an emergency but I am desperate, I don't know what to do 😭

OP posts:
SeamsLegit · 03/01/2024 20:02

Please go, they have to give u something, it's an emergency in my view!

Pippa12 · 03/01/2024 20:07

Just go- severe pain is an emergency. I’m a nurse, I say go and get help, that’s what it’s there for. Good luck

SecondHandFurniture · 03/01/2024 20:09

I would go for pain relief. I really sympathise. I had a tooth infection that ended in a curved root puncturing my sinus lining and DH found me in the shower, head leaning against the glass, screaming my head off. I had it out the next day.

Theinnocenteyeballsinthesky · 03/01/2024 20:13

If there’s no emergency out of hours dentist, I’d go OP, the worse that can happen is they can’t help but at least you will have tried

MuchasSmoochas · 03/01/2024 20:14

Please go to A&E, that’s brutal, no one should suffer Iike this 💐

Floralnomad · 03/01/2024 20:14

You could try the OOH GP , explain what has gone on and they may give you a script for better pain relief without having to sit around in A&E .

Daniagainagainagain · 03/01/2024 20:19

Thanks all, I'm just going to go I am in utter agony.

I have never truly felt pain like this, I didn't know you could feel pain like this

OP posts:
FijiSea · 03/01/2024 20:29

Hopefully they can give you a stronger co- codamol
A 30 would help you much more than the 8 over the counter strength one.
I am currently nursing mild to moderate tooth pain ( gum infection and old filling causing pain in very back tooth ) and hoping it doesn’t escalate any further.
There is nothing worse than tooth ache.
