Morning all

Posting out of sheer desperation.
I have an impacted wisdom tooth. I actually have 2 wisdom teeth on the area of concern which is a bit of a rarity.

It's been sore on and off for a week, I managed to get an appointment for Friday but I can't deal with this pain anymore I am literally climbing the walls. I would take the birth of my child over this. My fave is swollen on one side and the inside of my mouth is swollen, my throats on fire.
Rang 111, said nothing they can do and to wait for the appointment.

I've taken nurofen, paracetamol, OTC co-codamol, I am in sheer agony and it's literally driving me insane. I'm tempted to show up in A&E just to see if they can help with this pain, I've never known anything like it.

The teeth were found a few years back when X-ray'd for cosmetic work but they hadn't broken through the skin and weren't giving me trouble.

Surely there has to be something else or someone else I can help? I can't afford to see a private dentist, and the NHS appt is days away

Sorry for posting here but I'm desperate 😭

What will they do, refer me to dental hospital or you think? I'd really love it if they took them out but this is all new to me, I've never had teeth out before

On the 4 occasions this has happened to me with my impacted wis teeth I have been given very strong antibiotics. They won't pull my teeth out as I have a high risk of nerve damage due to the positioning.

So I've managed to (somehow) get an emergency NHS dentist appt today at 2.30.

What will they do, refer me to dental hospital or you think? I'd really love it if they took them out but this is all new to me, I've never had teeth out before!

It's so, so incredibly painful. Even breathing makes me wince (I know I sound like a wuss)

Hoping for a referral to dental hosp to get the bastards out!

My private dentist referred me to the nearest dental hospital only because they said they didn’t remove impacted wisdom teeth.

I would guess they’d refer you to a dental hospital or to the specialist department at your local hospital but depending on which is quicker you’d have to see re dates and times.

From when they took out my tooth, it was near the front and at the bottom of the jaw, it was done under a general anaesthetic but it’s a day case, mine was done in the morning and I was out after lunchtime (not that I anything!).

With the other wisdom teeth as they don’t seem to be impacted then your dentist can do this, I never had mine removed but my friend at the time had 2 on both parts of jaw removed at once. You can’t really eat much apart from soup, liquids, yogurt, jelly.

Most people don’t have teeth out these days unless wisdom teeth so don’t worry about not knowing much about this.

The NHS dentist will probably check for infection, give antibiotics if so and/or painkillers but better than nothing.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/01/2024 13:50

That sounds strange, so they won’t ever remove them but are ok with you getting them infected? I’d see a dental hospital if you haven’t already and a good dental surgeon there for a second opinion.

GabriellaMontez · 02/01/2024 13:52

No one who as had tooth ache thinks you're a wuss. Its one of the worst things. Hope the dentist helps you.

whoisjoe · 02/01/2024 13:57

Sounds like an infection (I’ve had this) oraldene mouth wash or similar for gum infections might help until you can get antibiotics- but I’d say you need them now!

Daniagainagainagain · 02/01/2024 16:07

Good update! I had an NHS appointment and it was fantastic. I had an Xray done and I have 2 wisdom teeth rubbing on the nerve (which are also infected) and on the other side I also have 2 wisdom teeth on my bottom jaw.

Top half only 1 wisdom tooth each side but both impacted. Theyve sent an urgent referral to maxifillofacial (I've butchered that spelling) and said I will probably have them all out as I have a very little jaw.

I was crying in pain and the dentist kindly gave me a local anaesthetic injection which absolutely hurt but my god it's a godsend. So currently drooling away.

I've got 2 sets of antibiotics and diclofenac which will tide me over but she said the wait won't be long as it's quite severe.

I didn't imagine this to be the outcome at all today. I've left a glowing review online. They've enrolled me as an NHS patient and said they will see me after the surgery for follow up.

Not looking forward to the numbness wearing off but it's a huge start!

That’s a great update and well done to you and the emergency dentist! As you’ve been referred as urgent to the maxifillofacial team it shouldn’t be too long to wait now. Be sure to chase up if you need to or go back to dentist if you need more meds.

I’ve got a small mouth/jaw too but I’ve left my other wisdom teeth alone and luckily they’ve not bothered me.

Try clove oil for pain (not sure if it works on wisdom teeth), that worked when I had root canal pain.

You must be so relieved!

FiloPasty · 02/01/2024 16:12

Wishing you the best, I had badly impacted wisdom teeth too. So painful.

6 wisdom teeth?! How is that possible?! Wisdom teeth are an absolute nightmare especially as if you’re Caucasian (though I understand non Caucasians can have trouble with them too) we don’t generally need them (due to small mouths/jaws?).

Daniagainagainagain · 02/01/2024 16:15

thank you all!

My next burning question, will they put me to sleep for the procedure? (I hope so, I'm terrified of theatres)

Great update, hopefully you’ll feel less anxious now too that you have a plan!

Daniagainagainagain · 02/01/2024 16:16

@Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain
Yep 6!

The troublesome two hurting are the bottom left, then I have one top left, then two wisdom teeth top right, and one bottom right. Lucky me! Grin

Oh thank goodness OP, I was wincing reading your posts. I have terrible teeth trouble and I know how painful it is

generally wisdom teeth would be taken out under a local anaesthetic. However given the complications with yours, they may do it under a general.

GoodVibesHere · 02/01/2024 16:22

I had all four taken out under general anasthetic, so no pain at all as I was asleep for the op. It was about a week before I could eat normally so make sure you stock up on juice, soups, mashed potato, yogurt, all the soft foods.

Daniagainagainagain · 02/01/2024 16:23

Will stock up on soft food thank you! I've also read that clove oil may help so I'll send DH to get some.

What's the recovery like?

Lollygaggle · 02/01/2024 16:31

Please do NOT use clove oil , ever , anywhere near your mouth. If it gets on your gums it will burn (it's an acid) sometimes right through to the bone.

Clove oil really should be banned along with tooth tincture , they cause many more problems than they solve.

I cant see them not putting you asleep tbh. I only had 2 removed and was put to sleep.

GabriellaMontez · 02/01/2024 16:36

So happy you have a plan.

I've used clove oil extensively with no problem.

KeeefBurtain · 02/01/2024 16:41

Happy you were seen today.

this stuff is a godsend. I had a broken front tooth and infection, and a 4 day wait to be seen - first day I probably took a bit too much solpadeine, got this on the second day and I kid you not on the 3rd day I didn’t even need painkillers just used this. Applied it with a cotton bud all over the area.

Surely there's something else that can be done (dental)

GabriellaMontez · 02/01/2024 16:36

So happy you have a plan.

I've used clove oil extensively with no problem.

I , personally, have taken teeth out where the gums have been so badly burned /inflammed by Clove oil use that it has gone through to the bone which has been so badly damaged the tooth had to come out.

It contains Eugenol , which many people are allergic to, but is also highly irritant.

I'll insert a paragraph about its use

While clove oil is usually safe when applied to the skin, repeated use inside the mouth and on the gums can have side effects.
Side effects may include damage to the:

  • gums
  • tooth pulp — the central part of the tooth which is made of connective tissue and cells
  • the skin on the inside of the mouth
  • mucous membranes inside of the mouth
Using dried cloves inside of the mouth can cause sensitivity and irritation, as well as damage the dental tissues. Consuming clove oil can be dangerous for children and may lead to seizures, liver damage, and fluid imbalances. Pregnant women are advised against using this remedy, as it is not known whether clove oil is safe for the growing baby.
PinkCyclamen · 02/01/2024 16:50

I've had three of my four wisdom teeth taken out under local anaesthetic (on three separate occasions). Not the most pleasant experience but not painful (apart from the initial injections) and i was absolutely fine. All done by my fabulous NHS dentist. Glad you are sorted.

IntheSnowySnowyMountains · 02/01/2024 16:58

Anbesol (from the pharmacy counter) is good for numbing mouth pain, since the clove oil has been vetoed.

Also Corsodyl mouthwash is good, tastes vile but might help while the ABs are getting to work.

I think if you need them all out it will be a GA. I had two out under twilight sedation and was very nervous, but it went smoothly and I was aware but not stressed. And one more recently with gas and air which did nothing Hmm And a local both times of course.

You'll need decent painkillers post-op. My dentist for the last one said to take paracetamol. Ha bloody ha. I took Oxycodone!

ChimChimeny · 02/01/2024 17:02

Mine all had roots growing into my jaw so all removed under general.
If you remember (it's a bit ask!) When you come round try not to swallow blood, I swallowed loads and then was sick quite a lot which disturbed my stitches

I was signed off work for 5 days and went to my mum's to recover (lived alone at the time) she blended all the normal dinners she cooked so I could eat them, my fave was salmon, mash and cheese saved sauce 😁
