Surely there's something else that can be done (dental)

Morning all

Posting out of sheer desperation.
I have an impacted wisdom tooth. I actually have 2 wisdom teeth on the area of concern which is a bit of a rarity.

It's been sore on and off for a week, I managed to get an appointment for Friday but I can't deal with this pain anymore I am literally climbing the walls. I would take the birth of my child over this. My fave is swollen on one side and the inside of my mouth is swollen, my throats on fire.
Rang 111, said nothing they can do and to wait for the appointment.

I've taken nurofen, paracetamol, OTC co-codamol, I am in sheer agony and it's literally driving me insane. I'm tempted to show up in A&E just to see if they can help with this pain, I've never known anything like it.

The teeth were found a few years back when X-ray'd for cosmetic work but they hadn't broken through the skin and weren't giving me trouble.

Surely there has to be something else or someone else I can help? I can't afford to see a private dentist, and the NHS appt is days away

Sorry for posting here but I'm desperate 😭

To continue the link contains pictures of burns due to clove oil so don't open if squeamish. https://ihrjournal.com/ihrj/article/view/222/778

That's a cautionary tale. Just shows how awful dental pain can be.

I have always followed the instructions and found it very helpful.

Crooklodge · 02/01/2024 17:11

Chloraseptic throat spray is great for tooth pain, dab it on with a cotton bud and instant relief.

Daniagainagainagain · 02/01/2024 16:15

thank you all!

My next burning question, will they put me to sleep for the procedure? (I hope so, I'm terrified of theatres)

You should get a general anaesthetic, I did!

Yes I have :( I was in tears on the phone to 111 and she just gave me phone numbers for dentists that aren't accepting NHS patients!

My oh had to call the emergency dentist yesterday for an extraction, his face swelled over night. I drive him to the hospital and they did it for £25.20! Our dentist would have charged £500 or more. Call emergency dentist tomorrow and get an appointment.

People get desperate, I have seen them attempt awful things. That doesn't mean to say that it's a good idea.

But to reiterate do not , ever , use clove oil in your mouth , no matter whether you follow instructions or not. It is a very bad idea and for most people with wisdom tooth problems will make things much, much worse .

Will stock up on soft food thank you! I've also read that clove oil may help so I'll send DH to get some.

What's the recovery like?

Recovery for normal wisdom teeth removal is good so I heard.

I’m a wuss and requested antibiotics I could drink alcohol on as it was my birthday a few days later. Bad move. I also found cleaning the area and eating and drinking really painful so a week or so later I ended up back at my private dentist who was angry with me for not cleaning etc and then I had to go back on stronger antibiotics, you can lose your teeth with infection.

So ensure you clean the area, preferably with salt water rinses.

I never knew about clove oil not being good so thanks!

Have you tried contacting your dentist again to see if your appointment can be bought forward due to the pain?

This. Our NHS dentist would see you as an emergency in your position

I've had three of my four wisdom teeth taken out under local anaesthetic (on three separate occasions). Not the most pleasant experience but not painful (apart from the initial injections) and i was absolutely fine. All done by my fabulous NHS dentist. Glad you are sorted.

They probably weren’t impacted though. Impacted teeth, in my case, they removed part of the inner jaw bone holding the tooth in place (owww!) and I had dissolvable stitches and a general anaesthetic. The tooth itself was huge, I was given it as a present! I looked like I’d gone 10 rounds with Mike Tyson!

rwalker · 02/01/2024 17:24

I had 2 wisdom teeth out they were at a strange angle
had to have it done in hospital under general dentist wouldn’t touch them
apperntly had to dig round for them
brace yourself for afterwards pain was minimal think that was stitches in gum

2 black eyes bruised so is deep it was blue yellow face looked horrendous all swollen at back
work thought I’d been in an accident but I repeat again the pain was minimal

Hermittrismegistus · 02/01/2024 17:36

Straws. Make sure you have lots of straws to reduces the chances of liquid you drink from entering the sockets.
You'll need food for a couple of days that doesn't require much chewing.

Daniagainagainagain · 02/01/2024 17:40

@Lollygaggle

Thank you, I will avoid the clove oil. I really can't be having this any worse it's brutal as it is!

How long does the procedure take? Sorry for all the questions!

No , please do not use straws after any extraction. The suction can remove the clot and cause bleeding or dry socket.
Food and drink will go into socket, cleaning carefully and using salt water mouthwash very gently will remove.

Zanatdy · 02/01/2024 17:44

If impacted they might need to knock you out as might require some cutting of gum etc (that’s what they’ve told me about my impacted wisdom)

Excellent.

No one here can say as they cannot see you, your x rays or tooth. Some wisdom teeth can be removed in seconds, some will take longer.

How they are taken out , if it is necessary they are taken out , and how long and whether sedation or general anaesthetics are necessary are questions best asked of the dentist who treats you .

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 02/01/2024 17:57

For one impacted wisdom tooth with me it was at least 2-3 hours. Depending on surgeons they may take 2 or more out at a time or whole lot out. I’ve heard of non impacted wisdom teeth for 4 to come out in one go but some dentists do it in 2 goes.

Catsknowbest · 02/01/2024 17:57

Great update 😊 so glad you are getting somewhere!!

I had similar (but not 2). My pain was not minimal. It depends very much on your pain threshold and mine sadly was low. Similar bruising and swelling to you though (not black eyes!).

Not necessarily. Dh was but I was not and just had local in a dentist chair.

Similar here. I have had all of mine taken out - one at a time though! The first one was with a general the rest with locals.
Those jnder locals were quick and gave ne leas trouble than the one under general which had a stitch in which was horrible.

I'm probably having 6 out 😩

How I've got 6 I will never know!

Daniagainagainagain · 02/01/2024 21:30

I already know it's being done at the hospital so hoping to be sedated!

OP posts:
RandomMess · 02/01/2024 21:38

They numb you up so you don't feel a thing. If you are awake they are less brutal removing them whereas if you are sedated they don't need to me.

Best recommendation is arnica capsules starting 36 hours before removal to lessen the bruising.

Babyblackbear78 · 02/01/2024 21:49

Just wishing you all the best with the new painkillers and antibiotics. Give me labour and delivery anytime over toothache!

You must be full of wisdom lol

Lizzieregina · 02/01/2024 22:25

My DD had 6 out at once but she was out cold for it. Her dentist was really good and she sailed through the recovery. He recommended alternating Tylenol with ibuprofen after and she was never in much discomfort.

Good luck with getting rid of them. Hope it goes well!
