To dislike social walks?

I think it's daft and a waste of time. How can you talk to someone properly. Fair enough if you're walking the dog or nature watching with binoculars but to walk just for the sake of it when it is a social event seems odd. I've a friend who has asked me to meet up for a 2 hour walk. Great😊I've asked if I can bring my dog.

Light hearted.

I love them, go on then regularly with friends - bit of fresh air, bit of a gab

Weepingwillows12 · 01/01/2024 18:56

I like them. Don't like sitting still much. It feels more relaxed and less formal.

ForTonightGodisaDJ · 01/01/2024 18:56

Give me a coffee shop any day!

Loads of things are daft and a waste of time. It’s whether you enjoy them that matters. Your friend probably won’t actually stop you looking at nature if you want to.

Herehare · 01/01/2024 18:58

How does a walk stop you talking properly? Think i’ve had most of my best conversations on walks. Fair enough it’s not your preference but it’s objectively got more privacy and opportunity for deep chat than most other settings. Also gets in some healthy exercise while socialising, and doesn’t cost anything.

I can't get on board with it 😂walks should have a purpose. We should be walking somewhere because we need to go there 😝

I don’t mind them but would definitely bring my dog. Id feel guilty going on a long walk without her

NotFeelingFestive · 01/01/2024 19:02

Walking is so good for you, it's a great way to get out in nature, get some fresh air, and have a good quality conversation.

I don't understand what the issue is with walking and talking? DH and I go on 2-hour walks with our teen sons and they love it too, plenty of opportunity for conversation. DH and I also walk with friends, and just with each other. You can only sit for so long in a coffee shop, walking is much nicer and you can make more of a day out that way.

Nothing beats that feeling of a well-earned cup of tea or bowl of soup after a wintery country walk with friends or family.

I disagree with the good quality conversation I think that's partly why I don't like it. I like to sit and actually relax and face the person. You can't talk properly if the wind is blowing in your face or if it's drizzling.

I wouldn't mind if any of my friends were walking at a similar pace to me. I'm a fast walker and keep having to slow down so they can keep up, which irritates me

We now meet for meals / coffee, and I do my marching walking on my own with my headphones and an audio book

Nudgethatjudge · 01/01/2024 19:06

Walks with a friend are brilliant - chatting, take a snack, take the dog, might stop off at the end for a drink and cake.
Exercise, fresh air and chatting - bliss.

But I live rurally and this is often my social life..

LiquoriceAllsorts2 · 01/01/2024 19:06

I find you can talk very well on a walk so do enjoy them.

Merryoldgoat · 01/01/2024 19:09

I don’t like walking as a pastime.

Fine as transport, not interested for ‘fun’.

arethereanyleftatall · 01/01/2024 19:17

I find the exact opposite op!

I LOVE the conversation when you go out for a walk. Something in the air makes it easier to think. Also, if there ever is a lull in convo, it doesn't matter cos you're out walking.

To the point that I now wonder what on Earth people are sat chatting in coffee shops for when they could be out having a better chat, in the fresh air, getting exercise and for free!

I couldn't agree more. I find it so odd.

I think it’s fine as long as you can walk close to each other and have a conversation.

what I don’t like is walking with people in silence as that’s just boring to me. some of my friends love the peace and find it calming .. this is not me! I’m a bit embarrassed to admit it irl. I’m an extrovert and I talk a lot, so I don’t go walking with these friends any more; we’re not compatible.

arethereanyleftatall · 01/01/2024 19:22

Also, there's nothing that can annoy you particularly when out walking especially if you're intolerant like me. Whereas a coffee shop could throw up shit coffee, stale cake, noisy kids, rude staff, rude other customers; I'm thinking of that thread a while back where the op queried 'what annoys you about other people in coffee shops' and literally everything annoyed someone 😂

Yabu. I love a walk. For transport or scenery. The more steps the better.

dancinginthewind · 01/01/2024 19:28

One of the things I re-discovered in lockdown was walking with friends, something I hadn't done since I was a teen in a rural area or in my impoverished 20s. I am much more likely to meet a friend for a walk now than I am to sit in a coffee shop with t hen

FuckinghellthatsUnbelievable · 01/01/2024 19:28

I like them bring a coffee, bring the dog. Fresh air, exercise and a good chat.

Chasingsquirrels · 01/01/2024 19:29

My friend & I walk "socially" most weeks, she likes nature aspects and I take my dog - and we have a catch up.

I'd rather meet at one of our houses for cake & catch up, but this kills 2 birds as they say.

Yes you mention two purposes there - My post is more about disliking walking as a social event. I've just walked about 6 miles around London because that had a purpose.

I need to read things properly. Came on this thread to see why you disliked social workers.
