To dislike social walks?

I think it's daft and a waste of time. How can you talk to someone properly. Fair enough if you're walking the dog or nature watching with binoculars but to walk just for the sake of it when it is a social event seems odd. I've a friend who has asked me to meet up for a 2 hour walk. Great😊I've asked if I can bring my dog.

Light hearted.

Since 2020, when cafes were obviously closed, I've got used to long, chatty walks with a friend or friends, and I must say I do now prefer them to chatting in a cafe squashed next to someone who can hear everything you're saying if they choose to.

I find walks very socially liberating.

I actually prefer a walk/drive if I want to have a proper chat, there's less eye contact than a coffee and because talking is less of a focus and more of a by product it seems to come more naturally to me. I love a social walk.

Walks don't have to have a purpose or fixed destination imo.

Again with the eye contact lol 🙄would you say you are introverted?

This sounds much more my cup of tea. I'm wondering if those who are anti-walk, pro-city are more extroverted? Even though I never thought I was to be fair.

I don't think this is a thing. I love both country walks, and a day out in the city. Love mooching around a gallery, and people spotting. I like everything best as a solo activity though, so I don't think it's the case that city loving types are necessary extroverts. I do like meeting friends for both walks and visiting exhibitions occasionally though, or our for dinner. But meeting one in a coffee shop is absolutely not something I would do, the coffee would be part of either the country walk or the exhibition, it would never be something I'd do socially on its own. It's the ultimate "what's the point?" activity for me. Plus, it's always better to move than sit. It just is, remember just that one thing and act on it, and your elder self will thank you.

Isn't it funny, my "what's the point" activity would be a random walk. Funny how we all see things differently.

I mean, YANBU to dislike something you dislike - we are all individuals and like / dislike different things,

Are you hard of hearing OP ? I do know some people who need to be F2F to have a conversation as they rely on what they hear being supported by a certain amount of lip reading, but also people who rely on facial expressions and body language.
Otherwise, I don't understand why you can't talk whilst you walk.

The reason a lot of us would rather walk than sit in a kitchen somewhere is for the exercise / movement / fresh air. Surely you can see why people prefer that ?

ImCamembertTheBigCheese · 01/01/2024 21:06

I am not a fan of 'walks'. I walk if I want to go somewhere, not to bimble about.

If I want to talk to someone I prefer a bar.

Well no I can't if I saw that I would probably be doing it myself. But different strokes and all that.. looks like I'm in a roughly 20% minority..and that's ok 🙂

We are supposed to look and face each other when we're talking regardless of our hearing.

Oh yes, I'm an introvert in that I love my own company and get tired after too much socialising, but I work in a customer facing job and am very good with people. But at work it sometimes feels like I'm in work mode and therefore method acting. I just find it easier to have a convo if we are doing something else too such as walking or driving! It feels more natural to me. But everyone is different, personally I hate sitting on a sofa or in a coffee shop chatting with someone as it feels too intense and silences can be awkward whereas they're not on a walk.

I think with me as well I've noticed is I don't like doing lots of things at once, or even two thing sometimes! If I'm exercising I'm exercising if I'm talking, I'm talking. Obviously I can do both but I prefer to concentrate on the sole purpose of whatever it is I'm doing. I also hate people talking to me at work when I'm in the middle of something, I seem to find it more difficult to switch than my colleagues.

When you have teens side by side conversations work better! I love chatting on walks

UsingChangeofName · 01/01/2024 21:27

We are supposed to look and face each other when we're talking regardless of our hearing.

Why ?

Does that mean you don't think people can chat on a journey - particularly if one is driving ? But also on a train or plane or coach ? Or during the interval at the theatre, cinema , concert hall?
Or sitting next to someone in a cafe or restaurant? Or in a booth in a pub ?
Or if someone is sitting next to you on the sofa ?

Yes, you can turn your head during all the above (less so as the driver) but you can equally turn your head when you walk.

I absolutely love walking, especially with company.

There’s nothing better than strolling through a woods and having a chat and feeling so good at the end.

I can’t stand just sitting still.

There’s one friend I refuse to walk with though, as her natural pace is like a power walk and I can barely keep up, let alone have enough breath to try and chat.

Maybe the walking socialisers are hyper multitaskers

Of course I don't think that, you're exaggerating what I'm saying. If there's no obstruction where you have to sit side by side you wouldn't continue just standing next to each other not facing each other in a conversation 😂you would turn and face each other.

I think I’d enjoy social walks if the weather weren’t so relentlessly shite and it weren’t so impossibly crowded everywhere within walking distance. I can’t concentrate on a nice chat if I’m having to fight my way through mobs of tourists on narrow pavements and trying not to get poked in the eyes by everyone’s umbrellas in the driving sleet.

BigFatCat2024 · 01/01/2024 22:19

You can't talk properly if the wind is blowing in your face or if it's drizzling.

Of course you can, and people are often far more open when you aren't facing them so I find the quality of conversation better when you are walking (or driving)
